It's a matter of taste but for me it's the Courtyard.

Donkey is probably used to European type curries, and it is all a

matter of taste. I would have thought it was not good to use the

expression 'Pakis' as it seems it is offensive to many. As the widow

of an Indian I have been cooking & eating Indian food for a very long

time, and I know that Pakistanis make just as good food. The whole

subcontinent has so many different ways of making their food. I make

a pretty mean curry myself, so they say!

Jay77, I Think you will find that Riaz Owns most if not all of your mentioned Indian Restaurants....Hence the Cooks/Chefs will be trained the same way and Recipe's similar!?

I did find that my Favourite Indian Food Restaurant in TRNC Is "JASHANS"........IN fact I would say its the best in the World!

My Parents visited TRNC last Year for the first time, Both my Parents stated that "Jashans" Was there Favourite Indian Restaurant They have visited in Their Life!!!

Donkey, I find your comment unbelievable!!!!!!!

Part 2...DONKEY....IF You care to look back in History I think you will find that INDIA, KASHMEER, PUNJAB, PAKISTAN, BANGLADESH ETC ALL come under the same Land Continent, Pretty much the same Type of Nationality Person: Except many differentials in Dialect of Language and Religion/Culture.

With regards to the food of the "INDIAN" Culture, I believe is Pretty much the same but with varient's of Flavour/herbs/spices etc...

Further to the comment made by Nunu, INDIA, KASHMIR, PUNJAB, PAKISTAN, BANGLADESH ETC were all the same country until independence in 1947. or should I say they were all classed as being part of British India. when India gained independence, West Pakistan (now known as Pakistan) was created and so was East Pakistan (now known as Bangladesh) Kashmir is still disputed and the Punjab was divided. This is a very basic explanation but it shows that what Nunu says is correct, the dishes are from all over the sub continent and they all contribute to what we refer to as Indian food, of course there are regional differences regarding the use of spices and also the ingredients, most of the food served in Indian restaurants has been anglicized to suit the western taste but wherever you eat the food and whichever province or district it originated from, I'm sure you will agree that it is great.

I also agree with Nunu stating that he finds Donkeys comment unbelievable.

We like the Taj Mahal Cafe, opposite Capitanos on the main road from Alsancak to Lapta. It's not a very swept up place but the curries are really excellent and the owner is friendly and very helpful

We went to AlShaeen last week - quite disappointed with my 'King Prawn' curry - it was two normal size prawns cut up into three - so I had six small bits of 'King Prawn' - shan't be going back.

Al Shaheen or Happy Valley for us, never ever had a poor meal from either and the service is always very good. We tend to have sit down meals at Al Shaheen and use Happy Valley for takeaway.

Jashan's was pretty awful every time we tried it, Oleander not much higher up on the scale, Grove was average at best, less said about the Courtyard the better, never tried Rafters. I did try the Chicken Curry once in Address as I'm not a huge meze lover - oh dear - Turkish restaurants really must stay away from doing curries!

Trust me non of the curries you get in N Cyprus are really like the ones you get in India. All are made to suit the market in which they are sold ie N Cyreus to the Western taste. Not to say they are not good though. For me Happy valley great for takeaway, Rafters great for a sit down meal.

Rafters for me, my husband always asks for a v.v hot curry and thats exactly what he gets, i'm not a fan of the hot ones but Abbas does do a lovely lamb one, not too hot n spicy but delicious, mmm i can taste it now along with the delicious onion bhajis, plus you always get plenty of rice there.

rcroton You are right. Have you been to India?

I think they eat more vegetarian dishes and there is

such variety. It doesn't have to be very hot, again, each

family has its own preferences and hotness tends to be

a macho thing.

Had lovely takeaway curry from Taj Mahal last week. Geoff and Emine are a lovely couple and the food is great. Also went to Oleander this week and the curry was excellent, as was the service. Now that they have decorated inside it is much nicer and it was lovely and warm.

No i have never actually been to India. I live in Qatar, over half the countrys population is from India. I work for a construction firm employing about 14,000 people most from india. As such we have alot of Indian cooks also. You are right in saying alot of dishes are vegitarian. Meat is not high on their diet most definetly not beef.
