Has anyone ever seen jars of Pataks Curry Paste for sale anywhere in NC? If not will have to try and persuade my brother to bring some over from the UK as I’m having withdrawal symptoms for home cooked spicy food. (I don't have the knowledge to mix spices myself, need to buy ready made in jars!) Will definitely visit Jashans for a meal whilst in NC to temporarily fix my cravings but need some curry paste to bring back to Libya with me!! Am prepared to drive anywhere, infact would even go over the border if anyone knows of a place in Nicosia.

Cheers, Abby

Barrovian1:

Got the information about Jashans Restaurant on this forum, and my mouth is watering thinking about how I'm going to stuff myself with yummy food as soon as I get there!! The restaurant is near Karaoglanoglu and here's their website details:

http://www.jashanrestaurant.com/

Never even been to NC before but have a long list of restaurants (as recommended by C44 forum users, many thanks guys) that I'll be eating at with my brother during my up-coming viewing trip, and I KNOW I am going to put on weight, but what the hell!

Simbas:

Would love the 'idiot proof' recipe you've got for a curry. Can you send it to my e-mail address please. I'd be very grateful if it turns out tasting remotely authentic (really, I'm a useless cook, I even manage to mess up from a recipe!)

Glencoe:

Is Orphanides the name of a supermarket? And have you actually seen Pataks Curry Paste in stock? Seriously would go if I knew I could definitely get some there.

Roversnan:

Maybe you could start up a little business exporting Pataks Curry Paste over to Libya; I'd buy loads of the stuff. lol. Actually, I really don't want to ask my brother to bring some over from the UK because he'll complain about the likelihood of it leaking all over his clothes, even though I'd instruct him to double wrap each jar in a couple of plastic bags. I'd rather the inconvenience of driving a hundred miles out of my way than ask him to bring some over and listen to him complain about the smell, blah, blah, blah.

Lyn: thanks so much for the offer, depending on how desperate I get I may well take you up on this!!

Bob: I agree, it looks lush, and all the comments I've read about the restaurant were very complimentary, so I hope neither of us will be disappointed! Will post my comments once I've eaten there ....

Hi Abby, I can reccomend Jashans, been lots. The owner, Riaz now has Oleanders on the same road and I think he has moved some of Jashans chefs there too. But I'm sure he wont let the quality drop!

Orphanides is the name of a supermarket in the south side of Lefkosa, Bells used to sell it spasmodically and as Gooligan says worth a try - never seen it in Tempo though

Hi I'm sure I've seen it in Supreme (opposite Lemon Tree restaurant). Also I'm sure Happy Valley restaurant (Seamus O'Mally's) is also owned by Jashans.

Will contact you off-board.

To all of you who have responded re supermarkets that stock (ed) the paste, many thanks for your suggestions, will drive around and see what I can find.

JamesB:

Will also try Oleanders as it's run by the same guy. Thanks for the info.

Just a point to note. We planned to go to Oleanders beginning of last week with some friends but it wasn't open. We went to Jashans for a meal instead and they told us it was due to open shortly.

Thanks for keeping the handover location a secret!! Am very happy that you have agreed to be a mule on my behalf. Just don't mention you are carrying these for me when you get to the airport - I don't want any security people putting their grubby fingers in my curry paste!! See you on the 23rd, and once again, thanks.

I'm sure Pat won't mind me posting this recipe as it seems to be a very popular request!!

Ingredients

1lb of beef, lamb, pork ,fish ,shellfish or vegetables

4tbs of oil

2 large onions finely chopped

4 cloves of garlic chopped

1 large tsp of ground turmeric

Tip of ground ginger

2 heaped tbs of ground curry powder of choice or to taste

2 tsp of ground garam masala

Half a tube of tomato puree

2 cups of water

Bunch of coriander

Salt to taste

Method

Heat oil in saucepan

Add diced meat quite small

Cook meat until cooked and remove from the pan

There should be at this stage some meat bits caramelised at the bottom of your pan along with some oil

Add onions and garlic to the oil and cook for a few mins ,now add curry powder, turmeric and ginger, cook for a few mins .add puree and mix together until blended together , add the water slowly and cook until sauce thickens then simmer for 30mins at this point you can add more water if needed also add half the bunch of coriander stalks as well { more flavour will be infused } when cooking complete add the meat back to the pan ,stir in garam masala cook for a few more mins . add more water again if you require add the remaining coriander and that is it . if you cook a fish or shellfish curry, make the sauce first when complete then add the fish then garam masala

TimothyCadman: Thanks, will be driving round checking out all the supermarkets suggested. Will probably end up going back to Libya with a suitcase full of the stuff. Pity we can't put glass jars in our hand luggage anymore!

Cheers, Abby

Jars of Pataks at Tempos are 6.90TL to 7.90TL. Cheaper by 1TL than Bells.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I'll be able to buy loads of jars - pity my luggage allowance is only 20 kilos, and the paste comes in glass jars!! Will head straight for Tempo, once I find out exactly where it is!

Tempo:

On the Girne to Lapta Road at Karaoglanoglu, on the right 500 metres passed the GAU turning or 100 metres passed Fatisa Supermarket, on the left, coming from Lapta. You really can't miss it a great big red and blue sign marks the supermarket.

Glad you got your Pathaks paste & recipe, but you can't beat fresh

individual spices for taste when making Indian food & they are also

available in most supermarkets around Girne. Even fresh ginger, essential

can be got I hear on this website. (Was married 18 years to an Indian & he

taught me) I have plenty of recipes including ones from India.

Where can you get the fresh ginger?

Has anyone seen swede for sale in the north?

Not seen swedes or parsnips in the north. Ginger may be available for short periods. Try growing your own.

Growing your own ginger

Things You’ll Need:

• Ginger root

• Toothpicks

• Drinking glass

• Flower pot

• Potting soil

Indoor Potted Plant

Step 1:

Find and purchase a firm, fresh, healthy ginger root from a health food store or a regular grocery store.

Step 2:

Cut a two inch piece of the ginger root. Stick wooden toothpicks in the root on both sides of it so that the toothpicks suspend the ginger root horizontally on the rim of a drinking glass.

Step 3:

Fill the drinking glass with water until the root is submerged in the water about a third of the way up.

Step 4:

Remove the ginger root from the glass when roots have sprouted and grown about an inch in length.

Step 5:

Fill a pot that has the surface of at least four times the size of the root with a good quality, moist potting soil about three quarters of the way full. The pot must have drainage holes in the bottom.

Step 6:

Place the root flat in the soil and cover it with about an inch of potting soil. Water the plant regularly without saturating the soil.

Step 7:

Place your plant in a sunny place. When the root begins to sprout, move it to an area that gets a lot of indirect sunlight.

For Transport to a Garden

Step 1:

Follow Steps 1 to 4 in Section 1.

Step 2:

Plant the ginger root in a pot with rich, moist potting soil. Cover the pot with a plastic bag and put the pot onto a sunny windowsill.

Step 3:

Remove the plastic bag as soon as you see the shoots appear from the root.

Step 4:

Plant the sprouted ginger root into the garden after the chance of frost has passed for the season.

Step 5:

Water the plant regularly without saturating the soil.

Unfortunately no fresh ginger on our side.

Crossed the border on Saturday in Lefkosa and bought in the South.

Very nice border.
