Hi all,

My geography's pretty poor on this. Any ideas? Just want to know for travel insurance. My options are either 'Europe' or 'Worldwide'.

Cheers,

Graeme

Mainland Turkey is certainly classed as Europe for travel insurance purposes, but TRNC can be a bit tricky. Give an insurer a call, they will tell you.

It is and always has been in EUROPE....it is not in the Middle East or Asia!

It is not in the EU

Note: I have found some companies trying to charge Uk VAT in NC....this is not payable as NC is not in the EU

Hi

We had the free insurance that you can get with your bank account and when my husband fell ill they paid everything.

just needed a doctors confirmation that he wasn't ill before he traveled. Mind you we had to go down to Paphos to travel home! He needed a doctor to accompany him and the rep was from ROC so he wouldn't let us fly from Ercan.

Stewart, Reading the summary of the ECJ judgement, I wonder.... Is not Cyprus as a whole really in the EU; with the so-called legitimate government suspended in the North along with the implementation of EU Law (aquis) because of the Turkish Military presence?

best regards

My mother spent a week in a private hospital here last year and had no problems with Insurance claim which only specified Europe.

Dear Elkiton...simple answer for you....are you covered by the NHS in North Cyprus? ( P11 )...if you are it is in the EU, if not...then it cannot be.

If NC is in the EU then I am allowed freedom of movement including bringing and keeping my car for no import duty...if it is not...then I am not

Do you still think after the ECJ GUIDANCE..not judgement...NC is in the EU?

Stewart, thank you for your reply...no I am not NHS overed, However... nor after 3 months out of England is anybody covered by the NHS in any EU country.

Re your other points....I agree with what you say, however being in the EU and the ROC govt being able to implement and govern is a different matter.

Reading the ECJ material again it would suggest that the implementation of the "remedy" to the offense (allegedly) committed in the north should be enforcable, but cannot be because of the Turkish presence. - and this is the crux of what is behind my question asking if we are actually in the EU but with suspended activities?

best regards

On the basis that an insurance company may use any excuse not to pay for a claim, I would suggest the best course of action is to check with the company if NC is covered and ask them to confirm this in writing.

If you tell them you are going to North Cyprus then they will say Europe covers it!

My Times atlas lists it as in Asia, but we have already decided it is geographically

in Asia but historically part of Europe.

technically no, N. Cyprus or Cyprus as a whole is not part of Europe.

The FCO classes it as part of the middle east, and so do i.

Her Majesties Government legally only recognises one government for the whole of Cyprus so as a consequence yes, TRNC is in the EU however, in practice this is not the case! An enigma!

cyprus is classed as being in the eastern med & the whole of cyprus is in the EU. Unforunatly the north side is on hold until after a solution is found. fortunatly the tcs can still get there EU status when coming to the south to apply for there EU id cards.

Israel is classed as being a part of Europe for the European Song Contest!

South Cyprus is a part of Europe.

So I guess the TRNC is a part of Europe.

Simples!!

Yes. North Cyprus, being part of the one country of Cyprus is in the EU (as distinct from Europe) and according to the EU.

However the Aquis Communitaire (EC laws) are suspended in that area as the regional government is not recognised by any other UN country than Turkey. The Cyprus government has no jurisdiction in the North and it's laws cannot be enforced here.

When moving goods into TRNC some UK carriers charge VAT (because Cyprus is in the EC) and some do not (as TRNC is part of Turkey) !!

Confused ?.......buy and live here and you will be, all the time at the bureaucrats and lawmakers antics.

Kavenkoy,

On the FCO's website (foreign commenwealth office), if you look up Cyprus, it is under the heading "middle east".
