Our friends commented on this when we were over last week. Up until now, have not heard any reasons why this has happened. It's very strange - anyone got any ideas?

Is the closing of all the casinos in Russia a golden opportunity for TRNC? If not, why not? If so, how can TRNC take advantage of this opportunity?

Can you imagine how much the TRNC casino owners would pay for the list of Russias biggest gamblers.

Bring them over, all free and maybe they will lose.

You could almost fly them here free and let the casino pay for the flight. If they don't come here, they will go elsewhere.

The Russians closed their casinos because of a chronic problem of gambling addiction amongst their citizens. A brave decision to put peoples' welfare above profit and greed. Gambling can destroy lives and rip families apart. There are many here who are already caught up in this nightmare, I bet. Encouraging the importation of such misery may not be such a great idea!

That think its bad for thier image so cover up the word casino with a bin liner. Just crazy we all know what goes on. When they turn off signs off for NIGHTCLUBS then they may clean up thier act. No way more money in thier pockets. So to all o you that go for the free food enjoy it will not change

cronos - ah, that would explain why he hasn't had any spare time to post on here! He certainly gets around in his tea half-hour (as my old Mum used to say).

Many thanks for putting us in the picture

in the paper a few weeks ago it was reported that there is a law that states that casino signs shouldn't be bigger or as big as the hotel signs. So the big signs were covered up, You can still see the smaller ones around.

mark message 10:

I'd like to agree with you-

but it smacks of social engineering at best, and hidden motives at worst

russian casinos may now operate only in remote areas of the country

perhaps one of the gambling big shots upset the kremlin in some way,

or was this another decision taken solely by putin without any form of consultation?

like own dear gordon brown quietly scuppered the manchester supercasino project

when he ...er... came to power

then again gorby took firm action against alchoholism by restricting vodka output

and increasing the tax on drink so customers had to que or use the black market,

and there is also the old russian tradition of the samagonchick, the country distiller

by uprooting the vines in georgia gorby fueled resentment which lingers to this day

in north cyprus casinos I'd have thought foreign vistors are the main customer base,

they need to be fairly well off to make the trip, so maybe that is why the locals say:

"come all ye!"

The closure of casinos and slot arcades in russia will only enrich the mafia groups, they have already opened illegal casinos. Exactly the same thing happened in Kazakhstan two years ago. There is still too much corruption within the system to stamp it out. You will not stop people gambiling by making it illegal. They should use the same system that is in Holland and some of the Scandinavian countries that have created help for addicted customers.

Most of the customers in casinos in TRNC are from mainland Turkey. There is a very small percentage of Israelies too. The casinos all have huge marketing offices and staff on the mainland. Customers go to their offices deposit their cash then fly for three or four days to TRNC.

I thought there are customers from the south too?

perhaps these are the guys with the gambling addiction problem,

who are chancing their luck rather than just laundering their loot

Heh heh - a very few moved to the TRNC. It's estimated there are over 120 illegal casinos operating in Istanbul alone.

It appears the same is happening in Russia as well.

Hi Woodspeckie, yes all the casinos were closed down over ten years ago in Turkey. The casinos and many hotels in TRNC would have not survived without that mainland business.
