After reading all comments on here about the Avon skin so soft for mossie bites my wife bought 2 bottles for our holiday. She gets bitten to death and so was looking forward to a bite free time. Unfortunately it didn't work, within the first few days she had about 15 lovely red bites. We had to go to the chemist and get something from them. I told her its because she doesn't drink Efes, they never bite me.

Nothing worked for me in the past but this product did and you also have the advantage of having very soft skin too. I bought 5 bottles from eBay Uk for about £7 plus postage ( to UK address). Avon lady Jo sells it here I think.

Isn't it strange how it works for some and not for others. I must admit we thought we had cracked it this time, but it wasn't to be. Will have to do some research before next years hols.

Aysesdaddy - did you use the SSS in the green/blue containers? Apparently, this is the only one that works. Skin So Soft comes in different coloured containers. Mus say, it works for me (fortunately) and I did hear on the radio a couple of weeks ago that it is now recommended for those holidaying in Scotland to help with all the midges they have there.

Aysesdaddy, has your wife tried Deet, we get it from camping shops in UK and after trying most products we have found that this works the best. A few of the blighters still manage to get through on me though.

Yes, I hear it only works with the blue oil bottle. Didn't get any bites last few times have been out and

didn't even use it all the time - left windows open at night without nets even! I used to be constantly

bitten with allergic reactions so either it's the Avon or they've gone off me!

We use a mossie spray through out the day and skin so soft at night , this combination worked for us in spite of showering a few times in betetween applications , plus we ate marmite , took vitamin B tablets , and used a plug in INSECT repellent , adhered to all this and no bites at all on our last 2 visits this year ''BRILLIANT''

Aysesdaddy

If you go into Boots or Superdrug when back in UK you can buy sprays or wipes that contain Deet and they are really good. The higher the Deet contents the better. I bought wipes from Boots which had 40% Deet in them and never got bit once whilst on safari in Kenya. Try them as the Avon skin so softşy doesnt work for me either but the Deet wipes did. They are in a grey box. Good luck

Thanks Chrissey. She always takes odourless garlic tablets about amonth before and whilst over there . Read somewhere that was good so take them every year. About 15 years ago the girls thought it would be fun to count Mums bites. Believe it or not she had 200. Hardly any part of her body without them. Luckily its not quite as bad now, but she still gets two figures.

Several people we met said that they did not get bitten, perhaps all the Mossie were on Holiday themselves while we were there!!!!!!!!!!!

We were in the centre of Kyrenia dont know if that was reason!

Sounds silly but also watch your washing powder. Some of the flowery smelling ones can attract insects where as the lemon/orange or lavender ones dont and actually put them off.

I always end up in double figures for bites but the passed 2 years have used Avon and orange smelly washing for my clothes and lavender for my sheets. Havent been bitten once in 2 years!

Aysesdaddy, we now always use a suntan and after sun that has insect repellent in it, superdrug or boots sell it. I think its in a yellow bottle, it works very well on both grandchildren and my hubby who always got bit what ever he used! Now he can go out of an evening with his shorts.

Solac if remember right, but have not had to buy this year as loads left in villa from family...lol

My Girls counted 180 sandfly bites on my wife she said they itched a bit I was impressed with Avon skin so soft

as i hav very few bites however travelling back to UK i went down with a fever and seriously bad headache for 3 days not too sure wether this was sandfly fever .My wife had no after affects other than itching for a few days. Will be using Mosquito nets from now on as the children had no bites they had mosquito nets.

Thanks for all the help, will look into the deet products. None of us can stand Marmite so won't be trying that one.

Msg6 is right: only 'Deet' works against mossies and sandflies. Most of the stuff sold in Cyprus, such as Johnson's Off, doesn't have sufficient % of Deet to be effective.

If you want complete protection, douse yourself in kerosene (paraffin in UK) - like the old gold miners did in New Zealand in the 1890's goldrush!

Take Vitimin B complex all year round this really helps. It can be bought quite cheaply from Holland and Barrett stores in the UK. Also 'Jungle Formula' comes in a spray, roll on, and cream. The combination of these two usually works great. Would not go for too high a percentage of Deet.

My wife takes Vitamin B1 about a month before she goes on holidays and we all use SSS and this has drastically reduced bites. I normally only get one or two bites every time we go and I have to say the only time I seem to get them is when I have been down by the harbour in Kyrenia

About two years ago one of our group reacted badly to bites he got and had to visit a local doctor near Astro and he told him next time he comes to Cyprus to go straight to him on 1st day and he could get an injection which would help him with bites. I think it takes two or three days to react but once it has I think it can last up to 6 weeks

We always used to get bitten by the mozzies until we used the blue/green Avon Skin So soft, I did not put it on one day (It was getting dusk), and got eaten alive.

Message 1 Many a true word is said in jest. You are probably right about the effes. I have been told that taking brewers yeast will be a deterrent to mosquitos so beer would work just as well.

Take Vitamin B1 about a month before the season starts or a month before you come on holiday, this gives it time to get in your body, take it whilst you are here also.

Spray with Deet based products and you should be ok.

deet?! fab stuff but you dont need more than 50% strength, and dont wear any nice jewellery.. its hates plastic so wash your hands after application and dont touch your sunglasses after applying as will take the coating off your lenses!! lol, i hate mosquitoes as they love me, jungle formula my fave deterrent, and i love marmite! Good point! also I had an expensive manicure & pedicure before coming out last year and the deet based mossy spray dissolved all the nail polish - don't know how you get round that one unless you wear gloves & socks to put it on but then you'd get your hands & feet bitten.

Have tried a natural spray bought from the chemist there which works - based on citronella & other herbs, deet free!
