A friend has just popped round and told me that a friend who lives in Alsancak

has had her childrens slide and a childs little ride stolen from their garden

and yesterday the thieves came back and stole all their beach towels off the line, and her sun glasses off the outside table.

Now they have replaced the slide but nailed it down and wrote on the underside of the slide their name which cannot be washed off. How dreadful is this taking childrens play items. Hope their hands drop off

The Police were called not a lot they can do, also the owners have been driving around looking for these items

I have helped out with the beach towels and some cuddly teddy bears.

What is this place coming too, in the UK I would have expected this but not here.

Can you post a description of the toys on here? Someone may spot them.

We had all the grids from round the pool taken plus some from next door, obviously whoever took them had a bigger pool - plus some nice flower pots and decorative pots from a house 2 doors away! Since then wepadlock the gate if out so a car cant back in and take more stuff!

we had a special door mat nicked, it was made in the jungle in Sri Lanka by a local, as we watched. It was elephant shaped. We were told it would last a lifetime, I cant believe it was nicked here!! we had it outside our cottage in the UK for a few years!!!!!!!!!

Not much consolation I know but, I spend my time flitting between the N and the S. In the S, say, 3 yrs ago, even in the middle of a busy town I could leave my car unlocked. Some of my neighbours even left their quite posh and expensive ones not only unlocked, but with windows open (some even left the keys in!)

Sad to say, in the past year, I have had all the contents of my car stolen. A neighbour has had their apartment broken into (now all alarmed up and lots of locks) and I do not, for one minute, think it is Cypriots who are responsible.

The place is changing. Much as Spain did in the ex pat Brit communities there. About ten yrs ago, when visiting one of my local haunts there, it was said to me that they had the Irish pub, the Chinese takeaway, the supermarket selling all the 'Brit goods', the drunks and punchups at the weekend and all they were short of now was a local copshop.

In the old Turkish quarter in Larnaca at the mo (well, most of the time). And I've never locked my car here before either.

In fact this has now involved me in having to decide upon someone reliable and available enough to leave spare keys with just in case I lock myself out anytime. I used to leave a spare set of apartment keys in the boot of my car (which was then unlocked).

They took EVERYTHING. My car is used like a 'shed'. I travel around all the time and keep all sorts in it.

Even more than a month afterwards, I was still discovering stuff that had gone. One of my neighbours asked if I had jump leads recently. I said 'sure' - and threw him my car keys, telling him to help himself to them. Duh - they were no longer there! I Brand new tent, still boxed, sleeping bags and mats. About 40 CDs, sunglasses, beach towels, 1st aid kit, all sorts. They even nicked my Insurance docs and emergency rescue call out stuff that I kept in the glove.

In fact, it is very hard for me to now remember to LOCK my car. Because, before moving to Cyprus, I lived in the gentle West Penwith and thereabouts in the UK and no one there locks anything up either. We even left our doors unlocked and wide open in the summer.

So, 15 years of not having to remember any of this cautious stuff and I find myself now having to keep nipping out to see if I remembered to lock my car?

Sorry you are now in that situation, I hope I never have to remember to lock my car (may be not worth nicking anyway) I can always remember my mum saying that she never locked our doors and this was Manchester, but I supposed it was the case that if any one broke in they would off felt sorry for us and left something!!

Ahh - those long gone days (sadly). We moved here (Bury St Edmunds) 9 years ago from S.E. London. Never locked our cars, half the time forgot to lock our houses, etc.

Now, people in our area are the victims of 'random' burglaries, i.e. crooks just trying your front doors on the offchance they may be left open.

Like others, when I was a kid (who lived on a council estate) people never locked their doors. Mind you, we were burgled twice
