After having my Mondeo impounded in Feb like so many other expats and refusing to pay the exhorbitant duty plus fine I gave the car to my son and he agreed to pay the 2500tl fine plus storage charges . he turned up at Ercan on Tuesday with my daughter and after all the rigmarole of getting the car out of customs pound they finally managed to get on board the Thursday ferry out of Girne which eventually sailed at about 15.00 hours they arrive in the turkish ferry terminal at 22.00 after a very rough crossing and both very seasick. They then drove not stop taking it in turns to sleep and drive. From Istanbul onwards the roads were not good and the snow right thro to Calais very heavy . The only real problem they had though was getting a channel crossing as the euro star had stopped running on friday night due to the wrong type of condensation in the electric motors typical, they arrived home at 13.00hrs Sunday. So the TRNC lost my contribution in duty because it was so unreasonable

Nice one scootex its makes me smile just to know that the evil customs officers who had there eye on your car thinking you would leave it to them that they never got there way. It might have cost 2500 ytl but it was worth it.

Also the drive across europe either way also holds a lot of memories for me. Hope your son enjoyed it as well as I did.

Happy xmas and f$$k the customs.

Re No. 4:-

The robbing bar stewards. You've done the right thing there. I often wonder if the KKTC wants us Brits out of the Country, let's face it there is no shortage of countries to move to who would welcome us with open arms (and I don't include S.Cyprus in that, who have by all accounts become even worse than N.Cyprus.

Just think how many Brits would retire to KKTC if things were made easier, and how much revenue they would generate for the economy. For myself and my wife we are a long way off moving out, but there will come a time when we will say enuff is enuff matey.

Constructive comments and criticisms welcomed. Bric bracs will be consigned to the recycle bin, hi hi. I am not just another moaning Brit, I've been here 7 years,

reply to message 5 They lost out short term because if the duty had been reasonable say £3500 I would of paid but as it is they only had a £1000 fine and as I bought a car allready tc registered they only got the 250TL registration transfer fee but long term they will probably get the rest of it from me some way or the other as I am bound to fall foul of some other law which incurres penaltys and fines

message 7 Hi Geoff I don,t think they want us out until we have spent all our money this is why they want to see proof of how much money you have when you renew your residency and when it falls below a certain level it's like the Cypriot wedding PO PO ,pin on & piss off

Rigsby I brought over a Honda pan european 1100cc on a lorry but as I have owned it from new 16 years ago it only cost me about £1000 I think, as it was in with all the other household stuff I brought I am not entirely sure but I think they used my allowance of 50% reduction on the bike which I did not want I would of preferred to use it against the car ,the sting in the tail was that I cannot sell it for 2 years which is a nusance as it is a bit heavy for me now and I still tend to ride like I'm a 25 year old ,alas at 60 the reactions are not as fast as they use to be but I can't resist opening up the throttle and letting her go. I'll probably do it once to often one day but the meantime I still know I,m alive when I ride it

Are you still allowed the 50 % reduction of duty at the moment or was this long time ago?

I think the visitor exemption which lasts a year doesn't apply if you have a residency permit.
