The EU are long on trying to tell people what to do and short on keeping its promises, like the promise to ease the constraints on TRNC after the Annan Plan "Yes".

The TRNC is no further forward than it was in 2004, yet the EU wants a goodwill gesture. In response to what, exactly?

They are, as are all citizens of Cyprus. This is not a concession but a right in the case of passports. As regards medical care, this is often means tested as far as GCs are concerned on production of evidence of taxes paid to the state. Because they deny the existence of a state in the North, they would rather forgo means testing TCs than accept/recognise TRNC paperwork from them. Hence TCs get free medical care in RoC.

I would like to think that they are now realising that there are two sides to this particular chapter and are now realising that a big percentage of the stalling on these issues are coming from the Gcs.All i want is for the Tcs to be given a fair crack of the whip,

I'm sure the EU would be as insistant today about the TA leaving Cyprus as they always have been.

Notwithstanding that, I agree with you that their other "views" regarding GCs may well have changed since then.

I have said before on another post that a reduction of troop numbers in the North would be a strong demonstration to the wider world that Turkey/TRNC are willing to make compromises in the search for a solution. This would put significant pressure on the South to do likewise.



The South is not a military threat and a reduction of troop numbers to match those in the South is a no risk, win situation for TR/TRNC.



Worth a try methinks

Re : msg 4 - "The TRNC is no further forward than it was in 2004", but also, since 2004 the TRNC and Turkish governments have not seriously moved "forward" in reassuring the GCs that they will be compensated for their land in the north. That is the main reason for the current stagnation in the negotiations.

Thanks for that link ... and what's more it was updated in April 2010



It has to be said though, that €38 million only works out to €152 per person ... that is, if we presume there are 250 000 living in the north.



Nevertheless, a "goodwill gesture" from the north, in the way of a partial troop withdrawal or serious reassurances of compensation, would be appropriate.

Dikomo, the location where the dump was, "is a town located in the Kyrenia District of Cyprus, about halfway between Nicosia and Kyrenia. The village is the birth place of the current Cypriot president Dimitris Christofias."



The Turks refer to it as Aşağı Dikmen and Yukarı Dikmen, ie. Lower Dikmen and Upper Dikmen.
