Europe to decide on non-Sky TV satellite football in UK pubs

The Landlady is appealing her fine of 8K for showing Nova Cyprus

My heart tells me the landlady should win, but my head says that the sat tv cos don't want their system of selling rights by country 'interfered' with ..

Freedom of movement of goods / services / citizens and their families is enshrined in the constitution of the EU..

6m I thought there was already a law as I remember quite a few years ago pubs were showing games via foreign satellites and then they stopped. I know this is completely ridiculous as I have a pub that I know of in East london that pays over £20,000 a year in subscription to Sky UK as they have now decided to charge per TV unit that is sited in a pub so 5 screens equals 5 times more money.

Sky earn mega amounts of money from pub revenues so obviously its in their interest but who says you cant watch what you like on your satellite.

And there was me thinking it was a new Al Murray Series!

Seriously I read about this in the Publican newspaper, Sky are clearly "not" involved in the case as it is the English Premier League who are protecting their rights. Nova are presumably funding the Landlady

If the ruling goes in favour of The Landlady then it will destroy the collective rights agreement in English football and make the Premier league even less competitive.

I will watch with interest

Hi Ataturk

there is a law - but it is framed to protect the financial interests of SKY and the Prem league ..

Harold: I seriously doubt Nova will go up again the Prem League.. they want to keep the rights... !

Someone must be funding her legal expenses, she is a sole operator pub in Portsmouth!

She should plead the Bosman ruling... if the FA have to give in... then TV should be forced to follow suit.

Well, Well

The Land lady has got the Advocates Generals decision ( legal opinion) - in her favour !!

This is similar to the Orams' case in that the ECJ rarely rules counter to the AG's advice..

LOTS of ramifications for folks in the EU to use ANY sat broadcaster they like ))))

Just listened to a tenant who has a pub in Kensington London he showed Sky in one part of his pub not in all of the pub. Sky said that the price was based on the size of his pub and it would be dearer as he was in Kensington Total cost £25,000 a year. The guy has just been on Talk Sport he reckons Sky could go belly up at these prices.

He also added that sky were showing the Wigan v WBA game yet the greek sattellite were showing Utd v Villa no contest

About time too.

Getting fed up of watching saturday afternoon footy with arabic commentary!

charging £20,000 a year to a pub is ridiculous as the price is passed on to the customer and to be honest the pub trade is in decline with a beer over £3 a pint.

I think Sky will be sorting our a top brief to take this further.
