Talks aimed at finding a just and permanent solution to the Cyprus problem between President Dervis Eroglu and the Leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration Dimitris Christofias will resume tomorrow. The two leaders will be holding their second meeting in the UN buffer zone tomorrow morning, following last month’s tripartite meeting in New York.

Eroğlu and Christofias will meet tomorrow morning to continue their discussions in the light of convergence works carried out by their special representatives Kudret Özersay and Yorgo Yakovou.

Following the Cyprus summit in New York last month, the two leaders instructed their special representatives to work on issues of disagreement on core issues, in order to ease the way towards achieving a positive progress before the next scheduled tripartite Cyprus meeting takes place in Geneva at the end of January.

Özersay and Yakovou held meetings mainly on issues regarding the Economy chapter of the negotiations.

The issue of territorial adjustments in the event of a settlement was also discussed at some point at the meeting.

The remaining scheduled meetings of the two leaders for this month are on the 21st and 28th.

Bill

Re the title of this thread.

The UN do not control the buffer zone, the Turkish Army do despite what everyone thinks. The UN are there just to monitor the situation. If you step into the buffer zone uninvited you are likely to get shot at by Turkish Troops. Even 6ms will not disagree with that.

RE msg 5, AJ: (...) The UN do not control the buffer zone, the Turkish Army do despite what everyone thinks (...)

▶ Between the Turkish (Cypriot) army and the Greek Cypriot army is always a sometimes wide, sometimes narrow stretch of land where neither army sets foot - it is patrolled and monitored by UN troops.

AJ Msg 6,

I'm not sure if you mean Turkey is in a position to control the BZ or if she actually controls it. The reality is the United Nations is in charge here and violations by either side are treated very seriously. Each side is signed up to the agreement and have to explain themselves if they go where they have no right to be. Most of the violations including shootings have come from just the one side though, and that is a matter of record. Also it was the same side which from time to time interfered with humanitarian work for petty or political reasons. Not sure if things have changed since 2002-2003.

In June of this year the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon recommended the renewal of UNFICYP’s mandate (UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus) for a further six months, until December 15 this year, saying it plays an essential role on the island of Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

As it's the 15th tomorrow what will happen?

Bill they have agreed today to extend for a further 6 months. The vote was 14 to 1. The negative came from Turkey.

seems they will accept this if there is a land adjustment , they are talking 80% greek and 20% turkish.

bill message 1

I just love their use of the phrase "aimed at"

after the first successful V2 rocket was test-fired in october 1942,

werner von braun made a little speech, which included the line:

" I aim at the stars!"

since then some wit has added:

"...but sometimes I hit london"

Interesting times all beit the time scales are not cast in stone and how can they be.

Msg 19. Such a question time would captivate a very interesting audience.

Turkey are very much holding there own in political circles, strength and ecconomy. Talking and debating the future for themselves and mediteranean neighbours and alliances.
