Hi all....... looking for information on cave systems in the Kyrenia range, or a local caving/climbing group/club with knowledge of any previous exploration.

Cheers

Gary

There is an extensive system beneath 5 fingers two pots one at 200m the other at about 300.

There is another system on the North side of St Hilerean

There is a system above Karmi and another above Karsiaka.

Our son (19 year old Uni student) does caving and is interested in exploring caves when we are next over. So keep us informed of anything you find out please.

Difficult is the answer- I know where they were some years ago - i can certainly find the ones on % fingers and probably St Hilarion.

You need the equipment and unfortunately now I have none.

When we did them we SRT's them but that was 40 years ago, what falls there have been since is any body's guess.

I know of nobody who is an active caver here.

The climbing is very good there is/or was a guide to 5 fingers and Kantara

There is also some pretty good climbing on the Greek Side around Paphos.

I went to look at it a while ago, the Greek climbers have now put bolts in most of the climbs, renamed them a pity as they were all done free.

There are some Gypsum caves as well i have forgotten where now but possibly near to Getchkali.

Would also like to know if you used natural belay/anchor points or if spits were needed, probably require replacement by now.

Even though I am over 35, I would love to go in for a bit of speiliology! Not sure you can do it here without government consent. Like an earlier poster, I have heard little of it. The only caves I have visited this side are the ones now open to the public at Cinargli (I think it is).

May be you should contact minister of Tourism, GaryRE. Good luck. I really know nothing, but am sure there are those who do.

Re 11

We used natural belays and SRT on the pitches- you have to remember it was a long time ago.

Best if you contact me when you come out here.

Just a quick addition to the thread.....

Hippo... are any of these systems still active & with any sump diving potential?

Also may be looking for company on some of the trips to help carry equipment... preferably someone with previous caving experience & maybe some SRT knowledge

Both the ones on 5 fingers end in boulder chokes, there was a little water as I remember it. The ropes we left in, certainly not usable now of course, but would be interested to know if they are still there.

There was a fairly accurate plan drawn up at the time I have no idea what happened to it after MR closed at Akrotiri

As the author of this topic I feel obliged to give some sort of warning to the unwary......

Caves can be an unforgiving & hazardous environment, there are no soft landings & a minor accident or injury can quickly develop into a major incident, given that there is probably no Mountain or Cave rescue in the area please be very careful if entering & carry a minimum of 2 lights...... preferably more.

This is not scaremongering, just a fact of life as I,m sure Hippo will agree.

On the subject of Spelunking/potholing a great film just came out called Sanctum , nicely done in 3D (one of the best 3DS's to date). You actually feel like you're in the caves.

I believe all the cave diving scenes were filmed in a tank in the studio........ suppose its better than killing most of the actors & crew in real caves ;-) ... still , they got free rebreather training. "Very" loosely based on a variety of real events

Garye, that big cave actually exists, seen a lot of people do "base jumping" into it..and talking about tanks, it seemed way out of place (I mean a real armoured tank).

The cave is in Mexico.

I,m not disputing the existence of "the cave of the swallows" that as you rightly say is in Mexico....... strange that the tale itself is based on a caving trip in PNG, my comment referred to the fact it is in essence a cave diving film with most of the action filmed in a studio (in a tank full of water.....with the seats removed probably) ;-)

The UK Cave Diving Groups thoughts...

As long as it doesn,t encourage people to attempt a cave dive without the proper training

I got claustrophobic just watching. It didn't get the best reviews , really bad acting but I enjoyed the 3 d effects it really felt like I was there, and yep it is based loosely based on a real event.

ok back on topic..
