My son is flying to Larnaca in April and then going to North Cyprus for a week

His passport expires in May

Will he be able to cross the border with 1 month left on his passport

Not sure about NC but Turkey you have to have 6 months, it would be better for him to renew it now.

Why doesn't he renew his passport to be on the safe side... Mine took just a week to renew and the unused months from the current passport are added to the new one so nothing is lost.

As he is in U.K , Theresa, surely it would be better to renew now. Better safe than sorry. After a;ll, just suppose that something went wrong (heaven forbid, but...) and he had to stay on, then he could have a huge headache.

Also most countries want you to have an unexpired passport by 6 months. Not fair really as it means you can't go anuywhere in that 6 months!

Seriously, it really does make sense to renew before he comes. He has plenty of time.

Then he can come over without worrying about where he will be allowed to enter and where not.

Hope he enjoys the trip.

Should be OK as long as he can produce evidence that he has a return flight booked before the passport expiry date, did check this out with Cyprus government offices (North & South) when I had a similar problem.

Theresa Msg 1 -

1 The airlines might reject him at check in. (If he is not allowed into the country they have to pay fines, costs and send him back at their expense.)

2 Insurance companies will not be helpful and if it causes a problem they might even reject a claim as he has not taken steps to "protect" himself. (He certainly should have travel & health insurance.)

3 Many countries (passport control officers) will not accept a passenger arrival with a short passport life. Don't forget you can of course appeal but that would probably not be instant and this is why airlines don't take a risk see point 1.

4 Although Brian in Msg 6 was probably right at the time that might not apply now and none the less the airlines rules apply in regard to point 1.

You have had good advice he can get a new one and a lot of time can be added so he will not lose out.

Take the advise of getting it renewed.

As it happens I am doing mine today.

Use post office checking system to send it and secure return for £3.

They say it will take 3 weeks.

Incidentally they will renew 9 months in advance of expiry and add that time to your new passport.

Does it take 3 weeks from North Cyprus or is that in the UK? I am in North Cyprus and mine needs doing before April.

Where do I renew it from in the North?

You used to be able to do it through the British High Commission, but this MAY have changed. Whynot check with the BRS or via their web page, and find out the facts.

We renewed ours from here via the British High commission. It takes a little longer and costs a tad more, but much easier.

But please double check on this.

Thank you for all your replies.

My son however has an irish passport and their turnaround period is 6 weeks minimum.

He will send for a new one asap!

I am sure you are taking the best path, Theresa. Definitely a case of 'better safe than sorry' and you have time on hand to get it done.

Good decision, methinks. And I hope your son has a great time when he gets here.

Hi Teresa,

If your son has an Irish passport you can send it through the post office 'An Post' and they guarantee 10 day return. If your son is in the UK send it over to an Irish relation and they can get it returned to their house which would be much quicker than the six weeks.

I like everybody else would suggest you get passport renewed better safe than sorry

Definitely would give your son peace of mind to renew his passport before his trip.

I'm sure he'll enjoy NC!
