I rented an apt. from Unwins and was an excellent tenant only to find out that after a month after vacating the apt. they are still not giving me my deposit back plus money which was credit on water and elec. which was promised to me!

I need that money to survive and it is so unfair not to get my deposit back after a whole month of waiting.

Has anyone experienced such a thing from Unwins before?

Unwins are known for their lack of concern to clients and staff. Their lack of responsibiliy is universaly known and their contempt towards individuals is well recorded.

I once stood in front of a shop in Guildford, Surrey, with a large placard, after the shop refused me a refund on faulty goods. They soon invited me inside to repay me !

Go to UNWINS shop and create a fuss inside, refusing to leave until you have recieved satisfaction. Be VOCIFEROUS in your condemnation of their practices and they may respond!

Be careful. What you can do in U.K and win is not the same as here. The system is not the same. By all means go in the office with a friend, or try the Fair Trading office. (and don't snigger) - they have helped many people. Somewhere on file I have the details.

If you cause a disturbance, the Police will be called and you will be the criminal, not the victim.

As to Mr Unwin and his business, he has a lot of critics and there are many who feel unjustly treated. So go to the chanels that can help you most. As I said, the system here is different. We were the victims of a totally dishonest car repairer, but my husband won't cause a fuss and so we lost money too. We got some back but not all.

Good luck. Trouble is that here there is no C.A.B., or Free legal system, so use the little that exist.

Did Unwins give a reason for not returning your deposit?

Try 'pleasantly' asking for a reason why they haven't paid you yet and then what they intend to do about it.

Take a friend and go when there's a shop full, you might get a better response. But don't lose your temper, it won't do you any good. Draw their attention, and everyone in the shop, that you're struggling without the money they owe you.

Then ring them every day to ask for a progress report, or if you've got the time visit in person. Patience and perseverence is needed. Good luck.

Have you got written evidence of proof that you gave them the deposit in the first place?

Yes, I have all the written evidence and will go through the proper channels of course.

I never expected such behaviour as a person who owns and rents apartments here, I would never treat my tenants this way.

I'll give them a few days and see what happens, if not I know what I need to do.

thanks everyone!

|I reiterate for you to go down the channels suggested. |best course. As for |Mr sungur he cannot really do anything, even though he got new regime dranw up a few years back to keep our crooked estate agents, that did not work as everyone who applied gave the correct information and were in. Protect yourself message 1. go through the correct channels. don't go in the office and create a scene. It won't do you any good at all, and i am sure that there are others who willback me up on that.

Good lucvk. Keep us all i nformed.

Marion (mess 19)

It would seem no-one can do anything in the TRNC?

Perhaps it would be good if you could explain in detail what the correct channels are! for john1234

You take me back many years, where the correct channels got me and many others no-where?

Polly Marples in message 10 and the message 9 both give the best channel. This is a 'free' service but if you want to put a couple of lira in for expenses they are welcome. But this man does seem to get results. Try! Outside of that - try prayer!

Seriously, TRNC victim, can't you share what happened to you? It might make some others feel better!

Thank you everyone for your input.

I received a call today letting me know my check is ready.

Unfortunately I was the victim of a very difficult landlord and it wasn’t Unwin’s fault.

Us renters sometimes think the estate agents are the bad guys but the fact is they are just in the middle between us and the landlords.

I am a landlord and when people leave my houses, they get their deposit back the same day they leave, I had to wait a month because of extremely difficult landlords which put both me and Unwins in a very delicate and difficult situation but after receiving evidence of all Unwin’s toils in order to get my money for me, I truly appreciate every effort which was put in to my problem which for me is quite small compared to the rest of this world’s issues but I need every lira and I needed it weeks ago as well.

Hats off to the team at Unwins, Karen and Steve thank you and may God bless you.

Thanks again everyone but some of the reactions here have been a bit extreme.

We need to remember that estate agents are the middle-men and the messages and issues they bring to us are of a 3rd party and not their own if the apartments are not owned by them.

The people who have stated very bad things here about Unwins should take some time to reflect and ask themselves if they could have possibly done something to deserve the way they were treated or dealt with and we need to remember that patience is a virtue.

This link is officially closed now, goodbye.
