Just wondering whether it's just me but ... For the past few weeks I've noticed whenever I get out of the shower I'm itching all over (and it's not from the mozzie bites!). I used to have the same problem in the UK and someone mentioned to me that it could be the chemicals that they put in the water to keep it clean. I never seemed to have this problem whenever I visited many foreign countries and even some other parts of the UK, and was happy at the thought of chemical free water!

I'm wondering whether the belediye might have started putting some chemical in the water recently and tonight hubby mentioned that he could smell a strong smell of chlorine from the outside tap.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Do you know whether it's possible to speak to the belediye and to do anything if it's affecting people with sensitive skin (ie me!)?

The belediye here put the same chlorine in the water that goes into most swimming pools.

On the odd time i also get that itchyness after a shower, maybe some times they use more chlorine than other times.

The only thing you could do is buy in tanker water and dont use belediye water to shower.

Interesting thoughts,

I have the same itchyness around this time every year, but put it down to the heat?

It also only starts after I have showered and gone to bed, never in the daytime ?

Just a thought if this is what it is doing to the outside of your body, think what it is doing to the inside!

Use bottled water in your kettle and for boiling vegetables, washing salads etc.

I would never drink the stuff. Does anyone? Although I have ssen my former Turkish neighbours putting it in bottles from their outsde tap to use for cooking. I would not even use it for that. Strictly for washing, myself and my clothes.

I always drink it in Lapta, and there is no strange taste to it. It is tested every month for purty etc. I must drnk gallons of the stuff. One Cypriot neighbour told me never to buy a very popular bottled water as they put some harmful chemcal in it. Also, what about the bottled water sitting in the sun for hours/ days on end in plastic bottles in a lot of shops, which is supposed to cause cancer. We all got to die sometime but I never imagined it would be from water !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Been drinking the water from the mains tap for years in Catalkoy. No problems whatsoever.

I asked my builder when we first moved in and he said he had been drinking it all his life with no ill effects.

In fact I have never really trusted bottled water and have only used it when no other options.

No idea where it comes from and no idea how long it`s been on the shelf.

Wasn`t a load found to be dodgy both here and in the UK a few years ago?

Trouble is, the mains usually fill a tank, which sits in the blistering Sun or just below the hot ground.absolute paradise for harmful bacterial "Bloom"...The addition of Chlorine is effective, but must be regularly and "Expertly" monitored by the water authorities....There's the rub............

Just another wrong negative comment

Most homes have a mains tap in the house feed directly from the mains.

If as msg 1 suggests,a "Strong Smell of Chlorine" was present, then something is wrong ,Chlorine in the mains water should not have a noticeable Smell/Taste ..Sorry to be negative but something is "Positively" amiss...

Mike, really? Then they would have no water when the mains was off...

Stellastar, The hoax about plastic bottles and cancer was blown out of the water (sic) ages ago.

That`s correct is this not normal?

Every property I have been into has a tap connected directly to the mains which does indeed go off when the water is off.

So we just fill a few bottles and stuff them in the fridge in reserve.

In Catalkoy, apart from the recent mains upgrade, the water very rarely goes off for more then a few hours.

The other taps are all connected to the storage tanks which of course are not drinkable.

Thanks for all the comments. Interesting reading. So, apart from switching to tanker water it sounds like we have to just grin and bear it?!

its very interesting to hear comments regarding water supplies especially drinking or general usage both should be of the same quality to save cross contamination, you should be able to clean your teeth while in the shower,

without the fear of some water borne bacteria taking its toll on the user either in itching or red sores,

all of these problems can be overcome quite easily, i have worked in the water supply industries for many years public and private these issues were buried years ago,

as for cancer in bottles the issue is in polycarbonate BHP (?Bisphenol A) now banned in many countries it is a real threat especialy when heated to 70 degrees + this is why baby bottles are now made of co polyester not polycarbonate and large cooler bottles should be in the same material if possible,

come back to me if you need more

I have have a sensitive skin, and dont have problems with showering with mains water . I have had problems with "shower gels" and soaps - could this be it? Sometimes a manufacturer will change the formula so that something that didnt cause problems in the past can be irritating, same goes for washing powders etc.

I drink tap water from the mains but not from my own tanks which stand in the sun. Fill bottles or jars with mains water for emergencies and change the water (pouring the old onto the plants) and plastic bottles regularly if not used.

fragrances in soaps have been a problem in the past reacting with particulates in the water that absorb chlorine, the suspended particles act like a abrasive scrub leaving a dry or rough feel on the surface of the users skin,

if you always use the same products then the source of water quality must be suspect,

the particulate levels will change with the seasons a whole house high flow washable particulate filter will help a lot, or use pure soap products

Tootie message 4 - have you considered that it may be nothing to do with the water, but the tiny "no see" flies that are prevalent at this time of year? This sounds likely as you say they are only attacking you at night time.

I think it's the tiny flies. they seem to like the moisture, hence when you come out of the shower....
