Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu evaluated the Greek Cypriot side’s unilateral efforts to explore for natural gas and petrol in the Mediterranean as provocative. Answering journalists’ questions regarding the Greek Cypriot’s unilateral exploration efforts, Mr. Davutoğlu said the Continental Shelf Delimitation Agreement has been signed between Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

He reminded that ‘Turkey is the guarantor of the Cyprus Turks and will therefore protect their rights’.

Mr. Davutoğlu evaluated the Greek Cypriot side’s attempts to explore for natural gas and petrol unilaterally in Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone just when the two sides in Cyprus have reached the end of the intensified Cyprus negotiations process and are about to finalize the talks as provocative.

‘I think they are trying to sabotage the Cyprus negotiations process as there is no need to rush into exploration issues, it could of happened a year from now’ said the Turkish Foreign Minister.

Noting that the United Nations must make a decision on this issue, Mr. Davutoğlu said if there is going to be a state in Cyprus made up of two founding states then the natural resources belong to both of these states.

What is Turkey's problem, they can't extract anything for months or even years its only exploration. I think Turkey is scare the Greeks will find loads of oil and offer some it to the Turkish Cypriots if they kick Turkey out of Cyprus.

Good point Cobbler,

perhaps the TC would not need to be as dependent on Turkey. This would lessen the control and loosen the grip. Not something Turkey would favour.
