Security can vary greatly from bank to bank but normally the bigger banks have higher standards.

there are a few cardinal rules to observe for safety:

1. Never give your password to anyone and those e.mails asking for it are hoaxes.

2. Never try to connect to your bank account by clicking on a link given by e.mail. The e.mail may look like its from your bank but it is not. If you click on the link it will redirect you to a site that looks like your bank but it is not.

3. Don't have an obvious or simple password and don't have it recorded on your computer. The pirates may access it through trojans.

4. Never access your account from an internet cafe or from someone's computer who may not be trustworthy.

Just observe these simple rules and you will be safe.

In essence, the communication between your computer and the bank system is encrypted and usually safe.

The biggest risk in any banking system lies with the client computer BEFORE the data is encrypted and sent to the bank. There are various trojans/viruses/keyloggers that are designed to 'capture' sensitive information as you type it in your computer.

Second biggest risk is the phishing emails, as ismet described above, it looks like its come from the bank, you click on the link, enter bank information and puff.

Simply put, keep your computer clean and free from viruses. Use latest versions of browsers(Internet Explorer, Chrome), they tend to be smarter and warn you if they detect any phishing activity, and most importantly, be smart.

A useful site to assist safer banking is Trusteer Rapport, recommended by many main banking systems.
