Sorry - I did have a quick look through before I posted - I know how annoying it can be when people ask things that have been asked before - I will look again.

It is the law as from last month. Nothing you can do about it if you dont pay up you dont get the deeds. Bad situation i am afraid makes the signed contract worthless really as the government can change things whenever they wish. It was just a concession a few years ago to foreign buyers to pay 3 percent on a first purchase and they have revoked it now.

yet for a local [Turkish Cypriot] nothing has changed, it is still at 3 percent, if thats not discrimination I dont know what is, imagine what would happen in the UK if they brought a tax like that!

Well as its their country they get the best deal. Young people are finding it difficlut to buy property now as values have risen since the foreigners bought cheaply.

Good point message 10. Perhaps if they had decreased the property tax to say for example 2% for locals, we could all stomach that and the locals would in fact benefit?

Would that be the cheap property built on the land sold by the young persons parents?

Yes we bought at very sensible prices but now we could buy the same even cheaper, and do not buy into the idea it is to encourage young Turkish Cyps to buy, it is just another way to get more cash from the foreignners because the Govt thought we bought too cheaply initially. Not that I agree with that, but who pitched the price - certainly not the purchaser.

IN a meeting with a certain MInister last week, I asked the question why the loss of the discount, his immediate reply was because you bought cheaply. My reply was that is racist and possibly a vioilation of human rights. His respone - a smile.

'his' reply should've been................'they' should never have been aloud\able to sell houses that are built on disputed lands in the first place....................cheapness falls into second category,or at least had the decency to give purchasers their so called title deeds.

That'd realy have given ME the opportunity to accuse of buying 'cheap'.

However,he (assumed minister) is trying to change the law for at least the existing cases at the very least and has put a proposal forward to parliement...............passes or not is another story!

"andyandsand" have you made any decision? I am also wondering whether to wait and hope that if people hold back in paying 6% we might see 3% or is that just wishful thinking? I feel most agrieved by this because we had our figures through in June @ 3% but had to wait until our solicitors has a response from the vendors and now the 6% has been applied!!! If only .......................what a wondeeful thing hindsight is!
