I have a skype phone that I bought for 30 pds in UK. After I opened it out of the packaging I realised that I did not need it as my computer had speakers. It was never used. I would like to sell it for 20 pds.

Actually importing any telephone requires written permission from the telco and it's not the first I've heard of VoIP phones being seized if they come in the post. I think Val is just giving you fair warning not to try and have one sent over in the post..

wum means either wind up merchant I think. It also has some discusting definitions according to the urban dictionary.

Val is correct.

You cannot import these telehones without permission. They will not let them in if discovered. Something to do with the military here.

Teresa, It is not cordless, it plugs into the computer. You can have a look at it if you like, before next Friday. I did not know this was an offence when I brought it in, how could it be, when I brought it over with my laptop for skype? Then I discovered that I could use the speakers on laptop so did not need it. Is it only the phone that is illegal, not the laptop? Sounds a bit strange to me.

VOIP telephones do not need permission from the Telephone Company. They are not being hooked up to the TelCo's system. If you have a land line and you want to connect an imported phone then yes it needs to be approved by the TelCo.

VOIP phones and headsets are freely available in the TRNC from many outlets.

I brought my Skype phone from the UK and my suitcase was subjected to a rather thorough search by customs at Ercan Airport and they were not interested in the phone only the telescope that I had decided to bring with me. I told them that the telescope was used and they were more interest In what I could see in the night sky with it and after giving the guy a brief explanation about astronomy I walked out without paying a Lira in import duty.

It is too big to insert anywhere but if you want to try it sometime then I can lend it to you but only as long as you clean it up afterwards.

Navek.

In the daytime it is purely a point of conversation with our guests and it is surprising how many people take an interest in it and unfortunately it means that most of our guests decide to stay late into the night to view the moon and the stars. You should try it sometime.

It might be illegal, but when I shipped my home over,

I have 4 Disney Character phones to plug into a telephone connection, I never thought in a million years that I would never have a land line. These were bought from America in Disney Land, but what do you do with them now? Store them in a cupboard in hope. Plus a set of boxed hands free phones. Hope one day that they will be of use.

For Whistler you posted a thread in Dec 08, before our arrival, stating you bought a skype phone locally. Could you please let us know which store you obtained it from and the cost.

For Mrwilson waht I am on about is a method of communication basically through the internet! Please use you spell checker!

Spider

Have never plugged them in as yet, they are still boxed up.

Plus the Disney Character phones were so expensive and now they are stuck in a cupboard, maybe I will have to sell them when I go back to the UK

The only thing with using skype through the computer Via microphone, if you sit too close to the mike, it's like having a conversation with a Dalek!

Unfortunately as much as I would like to use it in the daytime I would be risking my eyesight and the simple fact is that I could not even focus on the mountains in Turkey let alone somebody's back yard. It is a Newtonian telescope of massive magnification and also everything viewed in the sky is inverted. If you would like to look at the Moon and stars one clear evening then you are more than welcome to join a few select friends at our place. It makes for a good evening, drinks, snacks and a chance to see the sky like you have never seen it before.

Not sure what the big deal is with "Skype" phones.

I bought a web-cam with built in mike for app £15.00 last year, in Girne.

Plugged it in, with speakers on,

you can sit back and have a conversation via Skype/Messenger etc,

without having to hold a phone to your ear for over 1 hour.

Got Skype & Windows Live Messenger,

Also got a UK phone number direct to my PC.

My mother in-law can phone my wife free every day!!!!

Also you can buy Skype credit and phone anywhere,

landlines/mobiles at very cheap rates.

http://www.skype.com

Worth a look.
