Our Internet speed, when we have a connection, is supposed to be :

1024/256 kbps

On doing a speed test we are getting .19mbps download and .02mbps upload

A fraction of what we are supposed to get.

I am computer thick, I dont' know a great deal about speeds.

But I have just been in to pay my 6 month istalment at Bortec Communications and was told that they are doubling our speed for no extra charge .

The owner Bora showed me what to do when I got back home and how to check my speed.

Also over the last few months our service has been very consistent I find them vey helpful and can get in touch with them most of the time.

Msg 2.....Looseboots is in Ozankoy and he is referring to NETHOUSE.....he probably cant get on line so I am aswering for him....luckily I can type this message at the moment. We are with NETHOUSE but have not been able to use skype sufficiently over the festive season and anyother time in the last year has been mostly useless. Our internet drops in and out.....and cant get wireless upstairs hardly ever.....I usually just put it down to being in North Cyprus.....

Thanks Mrs Snakes. yes you are quite right. I am referring to Nethouse. Unfortunately I signed in for another years contract last October.

The only plus with Nethouse is there is unlimited downloads......but not much good if speed is up and down and 90% of the time a quarter of the speed i paid for most of the time.

I since discovered that Multimax for example offer for the same price, over a 15 month instead of 12 a 4mb wifi and not the 1mb that Nethouse supposedly offer.

Johnny, you are one of the lucky ones then.not sure what area they cover though.

I have used Bortec for the last 16 months and have had no problems. They offer a good service. I am the far end of Lapta and would recommend them

Hi loose Boots, sorry to hear of your problems, and Mrs Snakes.

To the best of my knowledge they do cover your area, we went with them in 07 when we lived at Bellapais.

Whilst we having our Villa built we moved twice and if my memory serves me correctly he reinstalled each time for no charge or maybe very little Charge.

Hope you sort Nethouse out OK.

Bortec (Bora bey) is now an agent for Extend.

We also used him from back in 2007 when he was an agent for Arinet who provided an excellent service or as excellent a service as Internet can be in the TRNC. Prior to that we'd spent 3 dire months with Extend.

Unfortunately Arinet & Extend merged or there was a takeover during early/mid 2010, with Arinet continuing to provide the business internet side (I think) & Extend running the domestic service. We'd gone to Bortec to get away from Extend, but then found ourselves back with the same poor service from Extend again. At this point, December 2010 we switched to Nethouse.

I will say that Extend seem to provide a better service west of Girne. I would never go back to Extend where we live in Catalkoy. Generally, the east side seems to fare worse for Internet supply. Maybe this is due to the location of base stations?

Nethouse is up & down, but far better than Extend ever was. Arinet was good, but fairly expensive.

Unfortunately

ctd.

we are stuck with Nethouse until December 2012 when we shall give Multimax a try. I would never ever sign up for 6/12 mths again regardless of discount. It means they have you by the short & curlies for a year, unless you want to lose all your money. They would never refund what you've already paid in advance. It will be monthly payment for us in the future.

I am on the 2mbit package and get that speed or faster most of the time, sometimes upto about 3mbit. It only seems to go slow early evenings when it will drop down to about 1 - 1.5mbit. On the odd occasion I have called them I have always been put thru to someone who sorts out the problem within seconds at their end.

After over 5 months emailing Nethouse re slow speeds,

I finally had the new Motorola Canopy fitted 22/12/11.

I got an email from Nethouse saying...

"Your speed is now 4mbit eco", what is eco?

That was from 1Mbps.

Speedtest result @ 21:33 tonight

Download speed = 1.29Mbps

Upload speed = 0.24Mbps

Not much of an increase :-(

Can they do better?

Can anyone else do better?

Nearly forgot, while fitting the new system on the roof,

the tech managed to break enough tiles on my roof,

that the next time it rained, we had water seeping in our ceiling,

for the 1st time in 5 years!

have had to replace 5 so far, ran out of tiles :-(

I have only had Nethouse installed for 4 days but in this time I have only been able to do emails as the speed is so low in the evenings. I paid for the 2Mb at 65tlpm on the Eco package, which unknown to me, and was not explained by the agent at the shop, that with the Eco packages they can drop to 1mb or less. When I called the help centre that said I would need a 4Mb standard package that does not drop down in speed, but this is an extra 30tlpm. I am still awaiting the arrival of the technician since Monday. I have signed up for 3 months but I was wondering if anyone had read the agreement, as maybe there is a get out clause like a cooling off period. I will certainly not be renewing my contract with this company.

My turkcel dongle was faster than this crappy set up.

Hi authentichoccie,

I was upgraded from 1 Mbps to 4 Mbps "eco"

Nobody told me that the only time I might get 4 Mbps,

was when I was in bed sleeping.

I have done a speed test using Nethouse's recommended speed tester...

http://www.speedtest.net

With my new 4 Mbps "eco" at 10:55 today I'm getting...

1.09Mbps download

0.24Mbps upload

I was getting as good with my 1 Meg connection,

Nethouse aren't doing themselves any favours. We were cut off on New Years Day with no warning or anything. When I called they said our account had expired, I told them we had paid for a years subscription with 6 months free, but they said they couldn't do anything, I had to speak with the accounts dept. next day. Although they managed to stop it without the accounts dept. involvement.

I spoke to the accounts next day and was immediately re-connected but it should not have happened and we will definitely be looking at Multimax when it comes to renewal.

We had little or no service Xmas day so contacting family was a problem.

But the signal is so erratic.

Are there any Multimax users that can confirm if there signal is more consistent?

I am in Karsiyaka and have the Multimax 4mbit connection and I cannot recall ever having the contracted speed - it is always faster when I do a speed test. I have had occasions downloading when Utorrent is showing a consistent 700+ mbytes for hours. I don't use it much after 9/10pm though - my experience is daytime. I use I-player quite a lot (all UK providers) using Multimax's free VPN connection and it never pauses.

There have been occasional downtimes but always explained and sometimes forewarned, but they are a new company so it will take time to get everything just so. However, whether I am using it or not, I get 1 free day for every 1 hour of down time.

Just tested now (14:23/Speedtest.net/Antalya server) and got:-

ping 35ms download 8.32 mbps upload 3.59 mbps

Hi Looseboots,

Switched on Monday from Nethouse to Multimax, mainly because I did,nt like the way I was conned with them not telling me about the "ECO" package when I paid to upgrade from 2MB to 4MB, people do not be fooled by this, there is no guartantee you will get 4MB, personnally, most of the time I was worse off than when I had 2MB, and when I spoke to Nethouse, lets just say they were most unhelpful.

So I moved on, heard very good reports from friends who had switched to Multimax, and I have to say the installation went well and they were very quick getting to me. I had a small issue with BBC iPlayer but Kemal sent someone round to sort it, seems to be running well now, and the speeds I am getting are very good, in fact compared to Nethouse they are almost double, lets hope this is one company who maintains good quality.

I know its early days to write a report but I am just answering looseboots really, as I live in Catalkoy.Yes so far very good.

Thanks Stevo.

That answers my question. Just have to decide whether to waste the money I paid for a crap service and switch. Doubt if I will get a refund for the 10 months still to run................

I expect they are 1 or 2 still happy with them. Have they not heard of competition of is it the Cyprus shrug thing....

They came today and changed my receiver on the roof with a larger one. I have the 2Mb eco package which has been terrible. At the moment it seems to be working ok with streaming the tv channels, but the live programmes on Sky Go do still buffer, but as its peak time this is what I expected, so will see how it works a little later. The engineer told me that even if you are on the 4Mb package it will still drop to 1Mb now and again. Also if you have a router it could be a different IP address to the box on your roof which he also changed so they are the same IP address.

If you could understand this message then you are much clever than I.

authentichoccie, just something to try if you happen to be suing google chrome as your browser with sky go 'live'. I am not yet 100% sure but I am starting to get a 'hunch' that using IE with sky go 'live' causes less buffering than google chrome. This may be a false hunch but may be worth an experiment. Have not got an idea how other browsers fit into this (if it makes any difference at all that is) but could be worth some experimenting perhaps. If you do try it and do notice any difference with different browser please do feed back the info here.

Hi Erol,

That advice you gave me worked, BBC iPlayer started buffering, so I switched from Chrome to IE and it ran as sweet as anything.

Thanks for the feedback stevo1956, it all helps. I have a hunch as to why it might make a difference, to do with how different browsers implement hardware acceleration for flash video playback, but without wishing to boast its actualy hard for me to test myself as my machine CPU is so beefy that hardware accelerated or not I wont see any difference, but on machines with less CPU umph than mine (which is most machine) it may be an issue. So its really useful for me and everyone really if people can feed back their experiences with differetn browsers. I hope to get hold of a less powerful machine in due course to try testing myself as well.

Just to add stevo if my hunch is panning out you should be able to get chrome to work ok following the instructions here

http://technicallyeasy.net/2011/03/how-to-enable-graphics-hardware-acceleration-google-chrome/

would actualy be really useful if you could try chrome with acceleration on and then off again and see if it consistently makes a difference to buffering or not.

Earlier at around 11.30am I was getting Download 1.79 Upload 0.54 when the engineer was here.

Now at 18.20 I am getting Download 0.75 Upload 0.11, not enough to watch or download anything.

I am going on the roof in the morning and taking the box off, and the rest of the crap that goes with it and throwing it on their doorstep along with the contract.

How can they advertise a product saying its 2Mb when it never reaches anywhere close to this speed,I may as well of paid a lower price for 1Mb or kept my turkcel dongle.

Its so frustrating after being talked into, saying the speed will be ok even if it drops to 1Mb.

Shame there is no trade desciption laws here....what tossers they are sorry to say.

1 : The more subscribers to Nethouse Networks leave their service - the better for my connection. Bye!

2 : Wait and see what will happen to your fine Multimax connection within one or two years...

3 : Did you get a *written confirmation* from Multimax that your (or your friends) connection speed is guaranteed for the next three or five years?

P.S. I've read and heard it ALL before in the past eight odd years in TRNC - NO provider can guarantee ANYThING in this country with its weak infrastructure.

P.P.S. Before you think Internet-paradise is within your grasps - read. Read about the limitations of EVERY wireless connection. Everywhere in the world, also in TRNC...

DC;

being a touch ingenuous here aren't we?

not long ago you were bemoaning the fact you were locked into nethouse on contract and couldn't switch to multimax.

Fair play about infrastructure but if nethouse would only do what it says on the tin, and respond to peoples phone calls and concerns then less people would be looking for greener grass.

I have to say that in my view the idea that internet provision here in the TRNC is rubbish, comparative to places like the UK either because the infrastructure here is crap or because Cypriots are chislers by nature is not really a fair one. There are some issue here to do with infrastructure the nature of the complacent state owned monoply telco (especially with ADSL connections but also in wholsale data products for ISP providers) but they do not define the differences in service compared with say the UK in my view. On the specific issue of stated max potential speeds and actual recvieved speed this is certainly not something unique to the TRNC. Just look here for example

http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/2011/03/average-broadband-speed-is-still-less-than-half-advertised-speed/

I do also think people forget the ways consumer ISP service here in the TRNC is BETTER than in the UK. For example no ISP here usies a premium rate phone number for support [cont]

Many in the UK do. Another example is throttling of connections that were sold as 'unlimited' when user exceed fair usage policies is I beleive much much more common in UK ISP provision than here. Another example is how quick an ISP here will send a physical person to investigate users who are having problems with their connection vs the UK. There are other aspects where provision in the UK is effectviely worse than here in general terms. I am not saying everything here is rosy in the TRNC, I just not convinced its as bad comparatively taken in the whole as many people seem to think.

Just my personal opinion on the matter.

I have tried most ISP's in the 6-7 years I've been here...

I had Nethouse wireless in my house, but we had some major refitting so we had to move to another house. This time I decided to give Multimax a try.

My experience with Nethouse starts a year ago and stops somewhere in August. I never had any issues with my 4mbit ECO subscription besides the fact that it would drop to 1mbit for a day following heavy usage (heavy usage is a vague term Nethouse seems unwilling to define but I noticed it is around a few gigs per 24 hour period).

Nethouse's installation was ok, customer service was ok as well. I had a few connection issues and always managed to reach someone to talk to.

I really liked their online payment options.

Connection speed was quite good. I do believe pings were better than what I get with Multimax. But it was a long time ago so I cant really provide examples. But as said before, the "ECO" thing was a pain in the a**.

So now I am on Multimax Wireless.

Installation was fine as well.

I first started with the 10mbit package but never managed to get that speed... I was getting 6-7mbits average. According to Multimax it was due to my location, so I switched to 4.

I must say I'm very happy with 4. Although I havent tested my speed for sometime, looking at torrents and downloads, I can say I'm usually above that.

On the downside, I seem to get disconnected a few times a day (I havent shared this issue with technical support yet but am planning to). And pings are higher than what I got with nethouse (but hey wait, my last speedtest shows 51ms, perhaps they have an improvement there?).

Customer service is ok.

My only major complaint with Multimax are payment options. As far as I know, you have to go to the office and pay. No online credit card, no paypal, etc...

To sum up, Multimax offers a better internet experience. But Nethouse wasnt too bad. Would I go back though? No.

DC - there is no 'national' infrastructure for the internet - each company has its own. If you mean the link to Turkey then there is spare capacity on the original link before implementing the new one. It depends on how much capacity each company rents on that link.

Multimax specifically DON'T guarantee a speed; they say that it can drop off at times it is just that I have never experienced it yet. But you only have to read the posts from Multimax on C44 to see that they understand about customer care - and installation is free so if the speeds do start to drop away then what is lost? I started with a promise from Turkcell that their dongle gave a 4mbps link but never achieved as much as 2 mbps from day 1 - and then they started to introduce their download limits to further degrade the service that I had paid for.

I started off badly with Multimax over their failure to keep an appointment and I was certanily the first to criticise them on here - but I am very glad I switched.

@ msg 42, authentichoccie: Where did I reply to *your* post..?!

@ msg 43, Jovial_John: Where in my post(s) did I use ""national" infrastructure""..?!

Compared with the country I'm from (Holland, with 98% super fast glass fibre cable all over the country) the infrastructure of TRNC is lousy wherever I look. But I'm NOT complaining daily - I wanted and want to live here.

Compared with Holland the infrastructure in every other EU county is lousy as well, in the most general terms.

re msg36 to DC:

1. This is your assumption and not my place to challenge it in any way.

2. Are you actually claiming that Multimax connection will get worse for customers within 1 or 2 years? How much do you know about our company? Have you ever used our connection? Do you have any insight information about our growth strategies, future expansion plans or the like? What makes you qualified to make such a negative claim?

3. Nobody has written confirmation from Multimax that the connection will be same or better after 5 years, but also nobody has been asked by Multimax to sign a 5 year contract of any sort. The longest contract we have with any customer is for 1 year, and it does include certain right and guarantees for the customers.

IF MULTIMAX IS UNABLE TO PROVIDE A CLAIMED SERVICE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, THE CUSTOMER HAS THE RIGHT TO OPT OUT OF A CONTRACT, OR ASK FOR A REFUND FOR THE UNUSED PORTION IF PAID UPFRONT.

Enough?

DC - Message 36....."NO provider can guarantee ANYThING in this country with its weak infrastructure."

In my understanding of English the "infrastructure of the country" is synonymous with "national infrastructure". I doubt you really meant the weak infrastructure of the provider because your command of English is better than that and anyway you have iterated "the infrastructure of TRNC" in your message 45'.

Download speed at 23.40pm = 0.62 Upload speed = 0.33 can only just about use C44.

The spanners will be out in the morning.

Has anyone had the contract translated as it would be good to know my rights regarding this faulty system, as I should be entitled to a refund.

I can't really believe that I signed something without reading it.

Hi Erol,

Thanks for the tip with Chrome, here are the results, with acceleration on I used the Test Drive Site Map, fishIE Tank, at the 500 setting I got 60 FPS, at 1000 setting I got 38 FPS. Then retesting after completely closing Chrome down, accelerator off, same test, at 500 setting, 4FPS, and at 1000 setting, 3 FPS.

I will try and test Live steaming over the next few days using both on and off and let you know the outcome.

Cheers, Steve.

Its madness that we are all trying to rectify the problem ourselves by doing all these tests and trying different browsers, when at the end of the day the dam system should be working or at least almost bloody working.

When the engineer(young chap that used to work in the local bar........ said that we will all get a day when the speed is only 1Mb I didn't think I would get everyone elses day as well.LOL

So I assume authentichoccie that you have not bothered trying with IE to see if it makes any difference to the problem you have reported here ?

Your choice I guess.

I think there are 2 separate issues here that is causing some confusion.

What authentichoccie is saying is correct, the speed an ISP provides should be the same across all browsers.

What erolz is trying to say is that sometimes the way different browsers behave might also have a direct consequence on the performance you get from a particular service (such as ITV).

Internet Service provider is responsible for providing you a connection from this Island out. There are many tools to determine whether that connection is as promised (such as the speedtest tool we provide for our customers on http://www.mmcyp.com )

As an example, if you get good results there, and Internet in general works fine, BBC/youtube works fine and you get buffering on ITV only, there is usually pretty much nothing we can do about it. At that point, the blame most probably lies on the other end with an overcrowded servers that is only able to serve an X number of customers simultaneously. (cont)

However, by some trial and error, some people (like erolz) have found a direct link between the visible performance and the kind of browser used.

This obviously means nothing to those who do not get enough bandwidth through to stream a specific channel, but it CAN help a great deal to those, who despite of a good connection, still suffering from constant buffering.

Erolz

Sorry I didn't reply to your suggestion earlier. I have tried IE but to no avail, it is no different to any other.

Its now 23.06 and I have download speed of 0.33 and upload speed of 0.09 which is absolutely useless. The thing is I am in direct sight of the Mercure Hotel where there is a base station, and my signal says excellent.

I am going into the office on Monday and demanding that something is sorted out or a refund, and if not I will take the matter further, as this has been ongoing now for a week and is not acceptable. All I want is a service that I have paid for, which I am not recieving.

They have also made my router public for anyone in the area to use,of which I have no idea of how to change. They gave me a password but the internet comes on at start up without asking for a password.

Thanks for the reply authentichoccie.

Just a couple of points, the signal level shown on your PC/laptop would be the signal strength purely between your PC/laptop and the box in your house you are calling the router (that I would call the wifi access point) and does not say anything about the signal strength between the nethouse box on your roof and the base station it connects to. Secondly because your machine connects without you having to enter a password on start up this does not mean there is no password required to connect to the router (wifi access point) in your house. The wifi access point may be password protected, but your machine having had the password entered once remembers it and now connects automatically, where as any new machine would not be able to connect without entering it. Of course it is also possible that it is not password protected and if that is the case it needs to be sorted out, but just because you do not have to enter it each time you [cont]

start your machine does not prove this is the case.

Please understand I am not saying the above to in any way suggest you do not have a problem. I would be happy to pass by yours and see if I can help (at no charge) if you would like me to. Just email me at erolz@cream.org I may not be able to help with the internet connection problems but I can help ensure your wifi access point is password protected and properly set up and also help you demonstrate and explain to nethouse what the problem is when you contact them in ways they can not say, that is not down to us its something else causing the problem.
