Hi All

is there a limit on how much cash one person can bring through customs, as i have been told it is better to bring stirling over to buy things in northern cyprus.

No Upper limit coming in. 10k USD leaving.

Leaving the UK with more than £ 5k and UK customs will want answers (Copy of bank statement will suffice).

I'm pretty sure you are limited to 10,000 euros (but agree with ttoli about proof of ownership / provenance of cash in case stopped). This limit is also per person so you could transport more if you are with your partner / spouse etc.

... but if you are bringing over more than spending money you would be better served by transferring larger amounts of cash to your TRNC account (if you have one) and accept that the small charge incurred (if any) is better than the money going missing enroute!!

Hiya Billywiz.

Unless things have changed since 2010, you are allowed to take £10.000 pp out of the UK providing you have a copy of your bank statement with you. So if there are two of you ie your wife, you could take £20.000. A couple we know did it and did`nt have a problem.

Direct Gov says "If you are travelling to/from a country outside the European Union you must declare any cash of 10,000 euros or more (or the equivalent in other currencies) to HM Revenue & Customs. Find out what you need to do to declare cash when entering or leaving the UK."

Full link to the web page is here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Foreigntravel/BringinggoodsorcashintotheUK/DG_173289

If you want to bring a larger amount with you it may be better to travel to the TRNC via Larnaca, as your exit point from the UK is through another EU country.
