Today we tried to open a joint HSBC account from Qatar to HSBC in Girne. Reason being is that husband will still work in Qatar and I will retire to Girne, his salary is paid into HSBC.

However, on the application form is a question that asks for a name and number in case of an emergency,

the lady who was guiding us in completing the form said that, "my husband cant name me, and as the 2nd applicant I cant name him". We have put the application on hold for the time being, but as I am retiring in May, I was hopng to get something set up before I leave Qatar.

Thanks.

The reason is if you both are killed or have an accident at the same time they need to contact a person who can deal with your affairs, financial or otherwise ,,, it`s the same in the UK but they say next of Kin,,, hope this helps....

Re: Msg 1,

It is definitely not normal, I have never heard such nonsense before.

All they need is your contact details, which are obviously going to be the same for the joint account holders if they live together.

Next of kin has nothing to do with the bank, they are not solicitors.

I have never been asked to provide such information by any banks either in the UK or abroad.

I worked for a Bank in UK and have opened many accounts for the customers and nowhere would we ask for next of kin as it would go to probate on the death of the customer. Hope this helps

None of the Banks I use, here or UK have asked for another number. To speed things up, just give them any number?

Its standard practice to ask next of Kin in a lot of situations including Bank applications nowadays dont worry..... I have several accounts wth the HSBC, Federal Bank of the Middle East,,,, Banks all over in 8 different countrys and have been asked that question ever since Money laundering rules became worldwide,,,, we today live in a different world........

Just Open the account.... it`s the HSBC not one of the fly by night Cyprus banks......
