CAR HIRE IN THE TRNC - what's the ruling for going into the South?

Hi

We had hired a car last year in the north and wanted to go across the border and we were allowed to do so without problems at the crossing in Nicosia.

However, we tried to cross the border at Pergamos (nr Dkhelia) and some jobsworth said we could not cross as our documentation had not been stamped by our hire company (and this was us even phoning the hire company, getting them to speak to the inspector saying they are allowing the car to cross).

We are about to hire a car in February from a different company who are saying under no circumstance are we allowed to take their cars across the border - which is fine. Just can't understand why if we've had permission from a hire company, paperwork correct for both crossings and were allowed through one and not the other.

Any thoughts would be appreciated (even though when we travel this summer we will hire again and make sure the documentation is stamped)

Please read "Border crossing" for advice....FYI Cars hired in the north cannot cross to the south

One of the reasons NC car hire companies do not allow thier cars across the border is : The insurance that is required for the South is very expensive, in the event of you having an accident or having to get the car recovered back to the North you will end up paying a hefty sum, I have been told of an incident where the hire car was left at Larnaca airport which just creates more problems for the Car hire companies.

If you do attempt it, check your insurance cover.
