Watch out for wolf spiders, the tarantulas are not aggressive but the grey wolf spiders are nasty.

we have seen snakes in the village.

most of my neighbours are always out walking so when someone see's snakes around they warn everyone.

last year there were two up a palm tree in a neighbours garden, out came the local shop keeper with his gun and problem solved.

Hi denizkisi,

Caught a large, and very fast spider,

was light brown with black rings round it's legs.

Is this a Wolf Spider?

Also had them coming in open windows,

but ran off as soon as I approachd them,

back out the window.

Mess 7, Sounds like a tarantula. The Wolf spider has a body rather like a pigeons egg, and quite a large head. They can make you ill if bitten, especially the young and the elderly. It's better to just leave them alone.

There are also some very tiny scorpions although you will rarely see one. Scorpions were quite large in numbers years ago. Lots of wasps and large hornets and the bull bee which is a very large black bumble bee. I was stung by one of these last year and it was not a nice experience.

We have hornets - never bother us but kill a lot of flying bugs that come near - given that I have a moth phobia this is very welcome.

The wolf spider I saw was grey with banded legs. They don't run away - they lift their legs up to threaten you if you approach. I caught it using a piece of card and a bowl and put it over the wall!!

We've seen two blunt nosed vipers in our garden - they were both around when watering, so be warned (they are also very difficult to see)

Is it true that the harmless black snakes (which I have seen lots of) help to keep down the population of the venomous snakes?

One of the large black snakes was removed from my bathroom and the plumber said it had come up through the toilet. Apparently the British introduced them to the Island in the 18th Century to cull the rat population.

Mine was only about 7ft long but Fazal said the adult ones are a fair bit bigger.

Don`t kill them, try and pick them up and put them outside in a safe spot preferably in the shade as the sun can wake them up.

Been told to steer well clear of the "Juliet spider" spins a yarn and tends to end up biting it's own self. known to share the same nesting habitat as the above.

If you read Redsnappers post again Smithy he said it was only 7 ft long but the adult ones are bigger!! so, the 7ft long one was only a baby??? Awe!!

I'm due back over there next week and am now scared to go in the house in case there are any 'baby' snakes lurking in there! Yikes!

a bit of advice of how to keep snakes away keep your garden clean at all times , do not leave any buckets with water in them . do not go near a black snake when it has just given birth it eill roll into a ball chase you and hit you like a whip . do not leave any milk out side for the cat it attracts snakes .one more thing they love the grass in your garden summer time i hate snakes my self best solution is to have a shot gun at home take care

Msg 38 "do not go near a black snake when it has just given birth it will roll into a ball chase you and hit you like a whip" Er how am I supposed to know whether it's just given birth or not? will it be breast feeding? lol - not that I'd go near one in any condition for any money - barge pole springs to mind!

Sheila, unfortunately I don't get there till the 14th so will miss the girlie lunch at Guido's but will give you a call sometime the week after
