roey65 - I think at the moment that this is probably the 'thin end of the wedge' and that things are set to get worse before (hopefully) they get better. Personally, I am not optimistic about the future of Britain in many respects. I find it very sad that Britain, once a great nation, is now, apparently, going to hell in a handcart. I feel sorry for our children's generation. However, having said that, I do feel that there are still a lot worse places to live.

Britain or more accurately the United Kingdom will IMO not exist within the next 5-10 years.

The Scots already have their own government and are only a small step, referendum bill notwithstanding, from full independence. The Welsh and Northern Irish have devolved administrations. I think the English also deserve to have their own parliament.

When the Tories win the next general election it will be good news for the ScotNats, as they know the prospect of any kind of federal Conservative rule over Scotland will drive forward an independence vote from the people.

I still look fondly on the Union flag and we were all united as British during the war, but that was nearly 70 years ago and things have moved on. I look forward to the day I can hand in my British passport.

Na .he wants to hang on to it in case he has to come back to this godforsaken country to get some freebies of some sort.I have no objections to Either Scotland or Wales having their freedom providing they dont expect handouts from England.Could be very interesting to see what would happen.I notice your location is given as N.I. assuming you are from N.I. why would you want a Scottish passport. Why not nip over the border to the south and get an Irish one, should not be to difficult for a man of your caliber, the been doing it for years...No freebies perhaps..

Last time I checked I'm entitled to an Irish passport as well. Anything as long as it isn't British. But don't let me distract you from your intellectual endeavours.

Britain has gone down the pan big time since Tony and now Gordon rule the country. Britain is now probably more communist than Russia with millions now being dependent on the state and that also includes the ever increasing army of Civil Servants.

We must not forget that Gordon saved the world but ------ up Britain and will continue to do so

One of the good things about the British people is that when their backs are to the wall they come out fighting hard, Ok the country has been running backwards due to years of a nation being disinterested in the political dickheads that are more interested in looking after the worlds scum than their own, the worm is starting to turn, we hav'nt hit rock bottom yet, but I believe the phoenix that rises from the ashes will be stronger, wiser and be in a better position to handle itself.

At least you have a decent park and the grass is a lot more greener. At least we don't have to have those air conditioners on, and that electricity and water shit problem.

England is great, rain, green grass, people are well behaved. Recession happens and goes .... life still continues here. In fact England is the best country in the world. Very well organised. At least you don't have pre and the process of buying an house is much more straightforward. And you don't get conned when your on holidays here.

England will never die..

Jerusalem - a poem by William Blake

And did those feet in ancient time

Walk upon England's mountains green?

And was the holy Lamb of God

On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the Countenance Divine

Shine forth upon our clouded hills?

And was Jerusalem builded here

Among these dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!

Bring me my arrows of desire!

Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!

Bring me my chariot of fire!

I will not cease from mental fight,

Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,

Till we have built Jerusalem

In England's green and pleasant land.

hi londoncypriot,

you comments on the uk buying process made me smile.

we are at the moment buying a holiday apartment in the uk , the sale has been held up for months and guess why?

title deed problems.

it happens everywhere.

i do think the uk needs to get its house in order, to many claiming free hospital treatment who are not intitled to it. the same goes for benefits.

i am interested at where all this money went that the banks lost.

how can you loose that sort of money?

something doesn't add up.

Msg 38,

Well I work in the courts every days and the guys and gals in wigs are using sentencing guidelines handed down from guess where? Parliament. And who puts the politicians in Parliament? The voters. So perhaps the real "tw@ts", as you put it, are the ones who have the government they deserve.

rubish macha , i saw a programe one morning were david cameron said enough was enough regarding courts handing down sentences that didnt fit the crime, day after some big wig in a wig warned any incoming government to dare interfere with the powers that be in the courts and to try and force sentences . Q. what would you get in the TRNC for armed robbery or rape or sex with a minor? i rest my case

If you're basing your argument on something you saw on the telly I can't really debate with you. What I do know is sentencing guidelines, or tariffs, are not decided by the judges or magistrates. They may have some leeway, but not as much as you appear to believe.

As for the court system in the north of Cyprus, any place which does not operate a system of open justice and where some unaccountable, unelected Turkish general calls the shots would be considered very dodgy by most democrats in the western world.

Britain has definitely gone to the dogs!

Last week I attended an AA meeting, and to my horror, each person present stood up and openly admitted to being an alcoholic.

I'm not having these boastful drunkards repairing my car. I can only hope the RAC have more responsible employees.

Oh, to be in England, Now that April's there,

And whoever wakes in England sees, some morning, unaware,

That the lowest boughs and the brushwood sheaf Round the elm-tree bole are in tiny leaf,

While the chaffinch sings on the orchard bough

In England - now!

And after April, when May follows, and the whitethroat builds, and all the swallows

Hark! where my blossomed pear-tree in the hedge

Leans to the field and scatters on the clover

Blossoms and dewdrops - at the bent spray's edge

That's the wise thrush; he sings each song twice over,

Lest you should think he never could recapture

That first fine careless rapture!

And though the fields look rough with hoary dew,

All will be gay when noontide wakes anew

The buttercups, the little children's dower, - Far brighter than this gaudy melon-flower!

Quarmby..Why live there if you have very little rights...I certainly would not live anywhere not knowing if the house I purchased in good faith was mine or had been sold to me my some corrupt agent and his equally corrupt lawyer friend. Most certainly would not go there with political situation as is. I think that is the reason a lot of ex-pats are trying to comeback home to this "finished country" for a bit of safety...

Hi Quarmby,

sorry to hear of your problems, sincerely hope things improve for you

Re

If I could sell the property I would be out tomorrow. Yes with hindsight, one of the worst decisions I ...

Are you saying it was your decision to buy a property that is the cause of all your grief or the fact that you chose to live in TRNC... or both?

I ask because a friend of mine asked my advice re selling up, as he is in the process of buying a property and still has his house here. He is currently in the process of "should I ... shoudn't I sell" and moving out for his retirement.

My advice was to hold on to his house here... maybe rent or such and go live in TRNC for a year to see how they adjusts to a new way of life etc.

It is a telling point because I think many UK people face the same dilemma and reading posts on here the views expressed are so diametric it would confuse a straight line

I have lived here now for quite a few years and I would seriously advise your friend not to sell up in the UK just yet. He obviously wants to try the TRNC but I would advise him to rent for at least 2 years. the first year you are on holiday and because its new to you it seems great at first but after awhile reality can set in and the daily aggros of the place start to take affect, they have been aired on this board many times and NN has described them quite well in the past. i should have originally rented but having always owned my own property in the UK it was alien to me to rent. I think it is very easy to buy here, I have sincere condolences for those who have not got their houses etc. but I think it is very difficult to sell. I know there are those on here who whinge about the UK but thats my home and I prefer it to here.

Hi Quarmby

Thanks for the update.. on both tags

If you were in a situation were you were still resident in the UK but owned a property, villa or apartment in TRNC, how would you judge your situation?

Not asking about land issues etc just how would it change/colour your view if that was your circumstances given what you have experienced thus far?

Some of those that live inTRNC and are slagging us off here in the UK dont say no there heating allowance or there other hand outs.If they want to save money they should stop all benefits to every one who does not reside in the UK permanntly, and that includes all "immigrants".To darn soft we are to all and sundry..

I'm surprised this question, "Is Britain finished?" comes so late in the day. 13 years of Tory mismanagement leading up the the Harold Wilson era in '64 would have been a better time to ask the question. Devaluation of the the worlds top currency by 20% not to mention the cuts in national values. Finished? I afraid it happened a long time ago. The corpse still twi´tches from time to time though. A better question would be possibly "I:s Lazarus likely to return?"

Just worried that TRNC does not become the same with all the British coming over here. I do not want our lovely island spoilt.

Already being spoiled IMO, we visit on holiday and we say "it is sinking in a sea of cement".

Ataturk..You would think listenin g to some of the ex-pats spouting their ideas and solutions to the partioning problem that it was THEIR island already.I think alot of them could be in for a rude awakening when the solution finally comes about.AS one posterhas already said "they are foreigners in a foreign land"and they will not get any special concessions there, because other governments are notas soft as ours..
