Hi Paul, can't understand why they would leave the subject on property issues if there is such a gap between them. If they move on and come back in say 6 months this subject would probably wreck the rest of the talks , surely they should continue on this subject til an agreement is reached IMO.

Turtle, This way, they can at least be seen to (pretend to?) be making progress on SOME issue or other - if they're really lucky, one of them might be run over by a Bus, before they get to the more difficult bits, and they won't be held accountable! Yes, I know, that was in VERY poor taste. I'll get my coat...

"NICASIA - Rival Cypriot leaders agreed on Thursday to put property negotiations on hold after failing to overcome differences in their talks to reunify the island, Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias said." Lol, yet more delays. Avoiding one of THE main issues tells me that these talks are bound to fail. I think 99% of people here now agree that nothing will come of these talks... Repro.

from todays cyprus mail "TURKISH Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will not run for ‘president’ next year if there is no solution to the Cyprus problem by the end of 2009, he said in an interview published in Turkey yesterday. In the interview with Sabah newspaper, Talat, who was on a visit to Istanbul, said he was unhappy with the pace of the Cyprus negotiations. Talat, who was elected ‘president’ in 2005, said "serious differences in views" remained between the two sides in the talks, the most difficult of which were property and territory. In a press conference with Turkish journalists on Friday, Talat talked about the upcoming ‘parliamentary’ elections in the north on April 19, and the rise in popularity of the right-wing and hard-line National Unity Party (UBP), saying if a party unsupportive of the negotiations was elected it would result in “chaos”.

Recent polls gave the UBP 40 per cent of the vote, with Talat’s party the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) trailing at 28 per cent. Other polls it the north during the past week showed the majority of Turkish Cypriots now favoured a two-state solution following Greek Cypriot rejection of the Annan plan in 2004." |

It is imperative for the future of TRNC that talks continue and that a convergent solution is sought. Failure to reach agreement could indeed lead to chaos. The solution may take several possible formats, seperate states, bi-zonal integration, total seperation, et al. What is certain. The TRNC cannot sustain itself whilst ostracised and excluded from the world stage,as it is now. Any Party that takes power in April elections, must drive the talks forward both with the ROC and just as importantly negotiate with the International political community to attain global acceptance.
