Google have launched 'Street View' of London and many other major UK Cities. It's quite incredible, you can wander up and down Streets, even zooming into single properties in high-def. Look up & down, left & right etc. Weirdly, I appear on it twice in W London! Look up your street or old haunts, see what it's like today, (or late last summer to be accurate). http://maps.google.co.uk/help/maps/streetview/index.html Have fun! Rob

Nige The Daily Mail would say that wouldn't they! All faces are 'blurred' out, as are number plates, or detailed hoardings or street advertisements. If you object, there is a 'report' button, bottom left, which will even enable you to have your house 'blurred' out. Why would you want to do that? Rob

nige VOYEUR?? Nor sure where you're coming from. This is an amazing resource, look at that restaurant/hotel/area you are interested in. This is the latest in information that may make maps and vague directions obselete.

Not sure I agree Nige as you can't see anything that you wouldn't see if you were there in person.

jimmyG only this week a slime ball in the uk has been found guilty of using google earth to sus out where there is lead on roofss in london and had been stripping them and selling the lead for scrap. Perhaps if you lived in one of the areas being shown and a scum bag saw you were not at home so robbed you you would not mind ?? Or you owned a high value car and someone looking at it saw you parking up and going in to a hotel / restaurant then knew you would be away a considerable time so took the opportunity to steal your car ?? Come on the uk has enough spy cams without all and sundry getting in on the act .

nige?? I think you have missed the point. These are street snapshots taken last year. They are NOT live, so no 'scumbag' would be able to see if you, or your car, are there or not there TODAY. Do you also think an A to Z or map is useful for criminal intent? Silly boy.

Nige I totally agree with your comments .This info leaves all kind of criminals to carry out reckies of an area ie surroundings, escape routes etc without the need to be seen as acting suspicious. On the surface it may seem perfectly innocent and even interesting for law abiding folk, but unfortunately this world is full of scum bags who don't care what affect their actions have on people

If the photos were taken over a year ago surely a criminal wouldn't rely on them now, would they? If I were planning a robbery I'd want to know my escape route was available now. I wouldn't rely on photos taken over a year ago. I think It's just a bit of fun as Rob said - nothing more.

I agree with Nige, this is invasion of privacy - Big Brother. Think about it. You all watch those spy movies and they zoom in to try to catch the bad guys and until this appeared on google many people I know would say "what a load of rubbish". Well here it is. Next time you go to meet the "girl friend" in a years time your wife may recognise you from your clothes you do not need the face. Or the boss will see you at that footbal match the day called in sick. etc But worse it means you are being potentially spied on every minute of the day.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1162356/Builder-used-Google-Earth-pinpoint-historic-buildings-stripping-lead-100-000-raids.html This court case reveales that scum are using satellite images to ‘case the joint’. It is reported that Tom Berge, a builder from London, is said to have used Google’s satellite images to identify churches, museums and other building which had lead roofs. The lead on the roof shows up as a darker colour. Once the building was identified, he scaled the roof and stripped off the lead. It was then sold to scrap metal dealers. At the time the offences were being committed, the price of lead was very high because of the demand for metals from China. He is said to have made £100,000 from his activities. It is not reported how much damage was caused and the cost of replacement. What is to stop any one watching a certain street restaurant etc to monitor behaviour and act with criminal intent, Nothing

Hi Nige, I share your concerns re. security issues related to Google Earth, particularly the Street View personnel, from what I've seen they can be really intrusive. However, as far as I am aware the images are updated (usually) years apart, so they can't 'monitor behaviour' in any real sense, they can only see a snapshot at a 'random' (daytime, presumably!) point in time. So that's one less thing to worry about... Keith.

Nige My apologies if you found my 'silly boy' comment offensive. it was meant as a lighthearted comment. This is purely a set of still photographs, as is google earth. You cannot 'watch or monitor' anything. Most of us have probably taken photos in restaurants, hotels, bars etc, without asking anyone there for permission and such photos, even if in the public domain are highly unlikely to be used for criminal purposes. Many times on 44 we have people asking 'where is X or Y', or asking 'what's it like around Z' and often getting confusing information. Wouldn't it be good if you could take a 'virtual' tour down any street, or see exactly what that village/town/beach looks like? Though I could see google running into problems if they tried 'street mapping' near any Military establishment in NC ! Rob

If you really want to get paranoid about who's watching, do a search on 'UK traffic cams' - some are live feeds, others only stills. some local authorities have thier own as well. A lot of these are good resolution cams, and are capable of zooming in to car indexes & faces - can't wait for the first court case...

re msg 20 Nige... they already do... they're called "the government". One of our army lads recently said on a panarama programme that the UK has triple the camara surveillance than the stasi did in the old East Germany. As far as I know we are now the most "watched" country in EU ...perhaps the world? Why? Regards Joseph

msg 25 the uk is in fact the most watched country. the commissioner for data protection says that at least 35% of all activities in this sector is ilegal under EU laws. and it comes worse: your government plans a database for ALL send sms from mobiles and for ALL emails to be saved for at least 10 years. congratulation. you did ask "why". its because of the war against the terror, you know?
