Met an old friend a while back ... I hardly recognised him... back in the 50s and 60s he was known locally as Elvis... fond memories ... so I penned a poem... because Elvis lives



With half a ton of Bryllcreem... Plastered on his head

With Hushpuppies of thickened soles... That looked like slabs of lead

With a pair of Jeans like drainpipes...And a coat down to his knees

He walked our street a Friday night...And all the girls but screamed



With a comb that peeped his pocket...He’d often take to hand

He’d drag it through his jet-black hair...To train an errant strand

The world it was his oyster...Without a care it seemed

As he walked our street a Friday night...And all the girls but screamed



He feigned a Yankee accent... Said “Elvis” was his name

Would curl his lip around white teeth... And shook his hips the same

He’d sing a line from “Jailhouse Rock”... Or “Guitar Man” was preened

I once again met “Elvis” ... And we smiled those days had been

For here he was all skinny ... And as bald as a baby’s bum

With dentures set with Fix-o-Dent ...Yet still he liked to hum

“Blue Suede Shoes” and “Hound Dog” ...And perhaps when “I Can Dream”

Dreaming back to a Friday night...When all the girls but screamed?



They say most people can remember exactly where they were when JFK and Elvis passed on... I think it's true?
