Hi Tina, when we arrived at the border crossing on the 16th July I was told that I was goig to be arrested and taken to Lefkosa police station because I was caught speeding in October 2007. I managed to persuade the guy at the crossing to let me cross as I had my family with me and that I'd pay the fine the next day. The next morning i drove to Lefkosa to pay my fine. it took me nearly 5 hours to find the police station and when i did the fines section was closed and i was told to come back the next day. The next day i was told that i needed the registration of the car that was flashed but it was a hire car from the south and it was 9 months ago so i couldn't remember and had no way of finding out. An Austrailian guy who spoke excellent Turkish explained that i needed to go to police hq to view the actual image of me being flashed so i could get the reg plate, he gave me directions but they were the wrong ones. i spent another couple of hours looking for police hq and when i found it it was only about a mile away. It took me 2 hours inside to get the info i needed, the guy who got me the info was excellent. I then went back to the fines office to pay my 142 lira fine to find it closed and i was told to come back on monday.

Monday morning i was told that there was no fine against me and being afraid of returning to the border and being stopped on my way home i argued with the policeman until he rang the border crossing. He then found the incident and i settled my fine. Then he told me that i could have payed it at the border on the way home. Fifteen hours of travel and being sent from pillar to post for nothing taking into consideration that we were staying in Esentepe. I suppose a good thing to come out of it is that i now know where evrything is in Lefkosa!!!!

If any one want's directions to the police station and police hq just post on this thread. Moral of the story, don't speed!

John.

simma,

Interesting and warning to others that in a hire car you are not safe from fines.

Friend has a car rental company and takes the speeding tickets and paperwork regarding the car in question to police station. That way the business does not pay the fine, but when you return to TRNC it is waiting for you.

This is one reason why you maybe a few minutes at passport control as they are checking for any outstanding "warrants" etc.

If you do try to leave without paying then your name will flag up at immigration and I am sure there will be no hesitation, children or not as to where you will go.
