Having recently tried to buy kitchen items for a rental apartment I would say if you can get to Ikea you should do. The availability of good contemporary crockery, pans, etc is not good and anything half decent costs a fortune. I managed to get what I needed for the rental but if I had been buying for myself I would have been very disappointed.

We have heard you are not allowed to bring Ikea stuff across the border, if they catch you with it they confiscate it! May only be rumour though. Some friends of ours got stopped yesterday with flat pack furniture costing €400 and were fined 400€ plus 30% tax. Apparently you are not allowed to bring furniture or electrical goods over!

You are allowed to bring stuff over from Ikea etc because I have myself and would recommend it. I expect they got fined because they exceeded the maximum allowance of goods that you can bring over - it is currently 135 euros worth per person I think..

They got fined for both reasons, because they had exceeded their limit and they were told because you are not allowed to bring furniture or electrical goods across the border. I guess you're only in trouble if you're stopped.
