Hope that Creditwestrep will read this, as I have a question. Why, if one or two banks can dispense Sterling through ATMs, do not all banks,? Especially Credit West as they really make an effort to engage with and give good service to ex-pats.

Could say the same for most banks as they seem to want British customers to open accounts then dont follow through.

Are you not better off addressing this with the bank directly?

Why would you need sterling in the TRNC?

I have not used sterling since I have been out here, I think you will find that the Turkish Lira is the currency of choice and if you want to pay with any other currency then you will pay through the nose.

I can only imagine it must be because Nationwide are charging for foreign exchange

Hi msg 4,

If you have a Nationwide A/C like us and you draw money out in Lira, you are charged for changing it and also you get the exchange rate of the day in the UK, which is always a lot lower than in the TRNC. If you draw it out in sterling, you can take to any bank or exchange and they will change it for the rate in the TRNC, so you save quite a bit of money. Simple

I agree with the Butlers wife, this is why I take out sterling and go to an exchange on my way home.

Simple answer is that Credit West does NOT hold sterling, okay to deposit but woe betide and try and extract your total savings!

I think one of the main attractions about TRNC is being able to pay in almost any hard currency you've got!

OK you can't draw Forex out of the ATMs as u can in Turkey but ....!

Msg 13

Try shopping in Famagusta, everything is priced up in € and use a calculator to convert to TL! I just pay the amount in TL and walk away with remonstrating waiters chasing me down the the Street; I'm telling them to phone the Police, this is TRNC and the currency is Turkish Lira! Disgraceful behaviour but rarely tread into Famagusta these days, as I can't afford Ismet's wife's fees to defend me!

They like the £'s .. Why are houses all priced in sterling ..

Quite a few things here are priced in $'s ..

It depends what the rate is on the day as to what you pay in TL ..

I bought 2 filters the other day priced £30 .. Always good to draw a few £'s from an ATM

Most prices in sterling are higher than their TL equivelent or why would people spending TL want £?

The simple answer to avoid paying to exchange sterling is you open a sterling account at Creditwest. Then when the TL is at a suitable rate to the £ you transfer it into your TL account for free. Then you can draw out from an ATM or trhe branch, the currency of the country you have made your home and spend it anywhere

Any more questions why not ring Figen at Creditwest? She is so really helpful.

when I first started coming here in the early 90's sterling went up daily against the lira and so things were priced in £'s so they didn't have to put the price up every day. This went on for years until recently when the £ is worthless against just about every currency in the world so now it is the euro. What puzzles me more is all the computer shops tend to price in dolars

I think maybe you will find that the creditwest ATM's only take locally issued cards part of the 6 bank cartel 'cardplus', could be wrong and no doubt will be pulled apart if I am knowing this board

lol
