Is there anywhere to park a hire car on the Northern Side border and be able to walk into Nicosia??

Yes, as you approach the Ledra Street crossing and have it in view, turn right and then about a few metres on the left there is a car park. You can then park there and walk to the crossing and walk over to South Nicosia. Parking is free.
