When did Google maps change Northern Cyprus to Greek? Why?

Perhaps I dreamed it when everything was understandable on the maps

@ msg 1, Inkman: If you don't like Googles attitude (I don't) use eMaps (Macintosh) software (based on Google maps) and you even get the TRNC village and town streetnames in Turkish!

For those of us who prefer mainstream PC systems to overpriced applemacs ...

Later version of google earth (as opposed to google maps) has a setting to restore 'alternate' place names. It's hidden under 'layers', 'labels' and the default is off.

Bubbles, whining threatening and lobbying as usual - Google doesn't seem to care that local place names have been the 'alternate' for thirty years now.

Ah! further to the above, if you look in the Google Earth sidebar, under 'Labels', tick 'Alternate Place names' to restore the names we actually use for places here in TRNC,

Untick 'Populated Places' to get rid of the greek legacy names which are mostly meaningless to current inhabitants* and tourists, as they don't correspond to road signs.

*with the exception of the odd historian and applemac owner. ;)

For road names, google maps currently hasd loads more up to date data than google earth displays. This data has been turning on and turning off periodicaly over last 6 months or so, but the great thing is when its turned on (as it currently is now) , is you can actualy type an address giving street name , town and cyprus in the search and be taken straight there. At the moment this data is 'on' again. So for example my address

"Dağyolu Sokak, Girne, Kıbrıs" is searchable in google maps and will take me direct to that location. It also works in google earth, but earth as far as I can tell only shows the road names after you 'search it' where as mpas shows all if zoomed in close. Even when this data is 'turned off' you can still see it (but not seaarch it) by using the google maps edit function.

Least thats how it seems to be working for me and has done for last 6 months or so
