I'm wondering if this might also apply to Cyprus? I know a friend of mine says he, like his fiends, withdraws his pension out of his ROC bank as soon as it arrives in case the bank goes under.

More surprising than the content of the article is the comments from the British readers. Why such hostility?

I think the hostility is pretty common, Bradus, people in England think expats are all tax exiles or train robbers in hiding, living the life of Riley in lotus land on ill-gotton gains. Did they but know! Some of us (long term permanent) are actually subsidizing the UK taxpayer by paying UK taxes without getting any benefits, not to mention what we save the National Health Service after a lifetime of paying contributions!

What really gets to me is that as a non-resident UK taxpayer I would be subsidizing rescue packages for expats in EU countries (including presumably the RoC) , but no chance of assistance in similar circs for UK residents here!

"Why such hostility..."?

There is a strong strain in C44 posts that the UK has 'gone to Hell in a handcart' and that by turning our back on them by moving abroad we have somehow preserved the 'real' Britain ...absolute rubbish, of course.

In a military situation how much protection would deserters get from those still in post?

David Vine on Radio 2 was having a discussion on how Greece will manage a pull out of the Euro. The suggestion put forward was that Greece would do it on a Sunday, making a sudden announcement and all monies in bank accounts would automatically be exchanged into Greek Drachma. The would be a limit on the amount of money anyone could then withdraw from their accounts as they did in Argentina & Brazil a few years ago when those countries went belly up. The sudden announcement on a Sunday when the banks were closed would prevent a run on the banks. The way it was being discussed on Radio 2 was as if it was not a 'what if it happens' but 'when' scenario.

Let us look at it from another angle. Euro was/is the biggest chanllenger to the Dollar. Just imagine Federal Reserve printing these dollars at a cost of fraction of a cent and selling them at face value. There could not be a more lucrative business in the world and all this under attack now. So they will do anything to get the Euro down and if possible the EU.

We know that all these rating companies are not all above water and they do have their own agenda. They have derated quite a few Spanish banks recently and now this news from UK which will cause a run on the Spanish banks. Is it calculated to do just that so as to give the final push to Euro either through Spain or Greece. Hence all these comments about these two countries in the British Media recently.

Got an email from my sister this morning about the artile in the Mail and so went in and took a look. It only affects people with mortgages and or money in banks over there in truth, can any bank be trusted with your money these days given that the EU wants banks to right off 50% of the debt of the likes of Greece? We prefer to keep the bulk of ours at home in any case. When we first came here Julie at HSBC told us not to bring more that a third of our capital here as savings and then only if we could afford to lose it (exchange rate differences etc).

So if you have your money safe at home and only draw out what you need through your Nationwide account that doesn't make charges for sterling withdrawals from cash machines you should be alright. You don't have a mortgage on the property you own what's left to lose? Nothing I hope................
