The wooden stained floor is looking manky. Id like to re do it with a light colour whitewashed. Is it just a case of me sanding off the current stain and then use latex paint with a rag?

Why not look up painting techniques on google - or maybe the library in town has a useful book

Your floor is most probably pine. Marshalls sell a Sadolin type semi transparent coloured varnish which is available in white, you could try this on a small patch to see if you like the effect. This would make it waterproof for washing as well.

Are the floors sanded? if so I have done this before and you can dilute white emulsion with spirit, then obviously it would need to be varnished to make it waterproof.
