Freedom of speech is not the same as it used to be! But then neither is tolerance.

Maybe everyone should have to give their phone number

before joining a forum

this would deter the trouble makers

As usual, "criminals can do what they want " But ordinary people " can't say what they think " ! So much for free speech and in the end WE are to blame because WE vote for the people who condone this ! Time to tell them all what you think when they come calling, looking for your support , next time. It should be a wake up call for all who believe in a decent society !

I wonder if she would have been fined if she had called them detritus.

The world has gone mad. Oh dear, I wonder if I can be fined for saying that?

Well I seem to be in a very small minority of agreeing with the prosecution. Or am I just the first to put my head above the parapet?

What derogatory terms would you lot be willing to have said about you?

When does it become OK for racial slurs?

What crosses the boundary of acceptability?

Are you going to start the ball rolling?

'I blow my nose at you, so-called Arthur King, you and all your silly English .... request a silly thing, you tiny-brained wipers of other people's bottoms!' (Monty Python)

I assume that insults are traded quite regularly on facebook, yet few, if any episodes of crossing swords result in prosecution.

Why then do we see a prosecution resulting from this exchange?

Gypsies are classed as a protected minority, apparently just as rare as the European large blue butterfly. This will be seen as a race hate crime.

I think the problem lies with the fact that we are told we have 'freedom of speech' and are 'entitled to an opinion'.

However, so many people make careers out of 'you can't do this' and 'you can't do that' and remove the very priveledges with one hand that they fight for with the other.

There is little freedom of speech, unless you are prepared to conform to the model that is wanted, and the truth is something that is not appreciated in UK society I am afraid.

If you ant proof that thruth is not welcome even in establishments that are supposed to uphold rights, the law and freedom, pop down to your local court and find a plump judge, and tell him it would be benificial to him if he wasn't obese. The truth isn't wanted.

You can think what you want, and say what you want, just don't let anyone hear you.

Now, how were things in Iraq and Afghanistan, and presently in Iran again? ............. hmmmm, not so different, only in consequential scale.

Are they any worse than a "large minority" of the settled population?

Society should be mature enough to absorb all kinds of opinions....what about the people at "speakers corner "..should not they say what they want and, if you don't like it, walk away. Where are the champions of civil rights (the official ones) when you need them ? Another cop out by the defenders of liberty !! lol. What assh...s !

Good luck with the 'niggers-out' speech. Let's see how that goes.....

The point is, targeting an individual that is provably a public nuisance is one thing and I would argue your right to point this out. Extending this to make racial slurs against whole groups of people based purely on their sharing an ethnicity is quite another thing. It's like saying freedom of speech makes it acceptable for you to go around saying 'all people living in Brighton are gay' or 'all Irish people are dirty'. You wouldn't would you? Well I hope you wouldn't....

In this case the woman's comment on leaving court really sets it out... "I shouldn't have done it in the first place." So she at least realises she was wrong.

Groucho,

I'm not saying that the right to free speech is absolute....it's not but, many people think that the" balance" has shifted to an unacceptable degree. People should not have to live in fear that their every utterance will be scrutinised by the politically correct brigade, many people make throwaway remarks when they are angry that they may regret, so what ?

As a society we should be mature enough to make allowances for the human condition...we can't all behave like saints when in a stressful situation.

The truth is that the information age has made it possible for those with such views, that one-time would have been expressed in passing and under their breath, can now all too readily record them for posterity and have them put out there for general consumption. It's a sad fact the often people just don't think before making outrageous gaffs. They will have to learn to temper their outbursts using this medium as it's easily abused and therefore easy to offend. What ever happened to 'count to ten'? The woman concerned now realises she was just plain daft to do so - lesson learned.
