Hi, when I was out there in my first visit I tasted the most delicious stuffed vine leaves. Can any one tell me what fillings go in these? Last time I was there in Kyrenia, vine leaves were on the menu but were not available at that time? Is there a season for them?

Thanks.

Hdi yvonne when we cook them we cook the mince with gaarlic pasley onions , he puts an egg to bind. place in leave and steam for about 20 mins. lovely serve with rice. Guido said in italy they actually put rice with the meat also pine nuts. I think you can put what your heart desires. Oh he just said if you add rice to the mince part cook both. Enjoy xxx

hey Lilli, you may have an idea there. I guess cabbage leaves are the nearest we have to vine here. And stuffed with some nice buttered mash, onions, diced carrots and onions - they would be delicious. You may have something here. I will experiment tomorrow!

Btw, what are the spuds like out there - I need my mash!

Lilli, next time I'm over, we should organise a nice bacon & mash nite! Lots of Kerrygold. (I'm sure we can get them from somewhere?) Stay in touch as if there's anything you need to be brought over from here I can stuff it in my suitcase!

funny story about vine leaves

we have a very large vine in our garden in london and it bears fruit ,one day when my grandson was about five i was picking the leaves and not the grapes and he said dede [grandad] you are picking the wrong bits.

i laughed ,his 10 now and dolma [stuffed vine leaves ] are his favourite ,the other day he sat with me to eat and i noticed he undone all his dolma and took out the stuffing ,i asked don,t you like the leaves ,he said no i don,t like the stuffing ,i just love the leaves ,i looked at my wife and said to her ,thats your side of the family ,irish ,and got a slap round the head.

hi skogsy

boil a pan of salted water place the leaves in for a couple of mins, carefully take them out & seperate them, before putting the mixture in squirt & rub a bit of lemon juice on them before wrapping them.

Thanks Juliet.

I will push the boundaries of culinary wizardry and try them out, homemade style.

I have discovered that they are available in tins but I dont suppose they need boiling first.

Tinned vine leaves. Must be a coup along with bottled water!

Yvonne / Skogsy

I was told to pick the newer leaves that are paler / tender.

The darker mature leaves are tougher.

BUT this begs the question do vine leaves grow continually through the year?

quite right, best to pick them in the summer & freeze them straight from the vine.

Yvonne, some of that extra space in your suitcase should be filled with some good wholemeal/stoneground bread. Its about the only thing I miss.
