Most give you the option of both TL and GBP but remember you will be charged - think nationwide only bank not to charge for money taken out abroad.

Ces88 is right.....get yourself a Nationwide card account to avoid nasty charges.

Also....most of the larger Bank's ATM's in the TRNC give you the option of having your cash in lira or sterling.

Please forgive my ignorance here, but what advantage is there in withdrawing GBP from a cash machine in N. Cyprus? I have read that many places accept GBP and Euros, but they obviously will accept Lira as well. Is there an exchange rate advantage in withdrawing GBP?

Cheers,

Ralph

Jetnoise. Only to pay your rent, which most landlords ask for in sterling.

Thanks Whistler - that explains it - no advantage for a poor tourist then!

jetnoise, you get a better rate when exchanging GBP for TL in TRNC than in UK, change it up when you get there if you can...

Thanks ces88 - I was intending to do just that - bring out GBP cash and change on arrival and then use Nationwide cashpoint card as they do not charge for withdrawals or any commission for exchange.

As an aside, where is the best place to change GBP in to Lira - I am guessing that shops are worst (when purchasing) followed by airport and hotels and that banks are best?

Cheers,

Ralph

If you are in Girne from the main car park go down the main street on the left there is an exchange they have the best rates GBP to Lira higher rate than the banks. Next to the Dome near Ataturk Statue there is a HSBC kiosk get GBP from there with Nationwide Card.

Not necessarily... some supermarkets have similar rates to the independent exchange shops which tend to be better even than banks. It sounds like we use the same exchange as Woodspeckie (usually 2 ladies working in there, 2 boys in there at new year though) If it's not open try the exchange on right hand side of the same road, it's on a corner to side street down to harbour - his rates tend to be quite good too.

There is a very good exchange place in Alsancak opposite Capitano fish restaurant (shaped like a boat) and near the DVD shop.
