I said I wouldn't post any more but some things must be aired!!!

Has anybody experienced what myself and 4 friends have experineced this week, we are all with DOPI TV and we were asked to drop our boxes into the shop in Girne to have them upgraded, all of us took out our subscriptions for one year between June and August 2008 we were charged around £600 for instalation and one year subscription, then the sub would be £150 per year after that, good value we all thought !!!.

not so

the DOPI people sent text messages in the past couple of days asking to go into their office in girne and take boxes for upgrading, then followed with a call to say that we will have to pay about $250 for new boxes but we would "get the next year for that money " when asked about our existing 5/6 months of our contracts we were in effect told tough, do you want to deal with people like this ???

Stick to Digiturk or someone you can trust, after all these people all supply pirated software anyhow

This is the very reason I paid out for the 4.2m dish and pay my subs to sky from my uk bank account, no messing and no extra charges..and all the programmes I want..and when you add up all the bits and bobs you are all paying for coldsat, dopi etc..I got the better deal..

I thought that Sky didn't allow their boxes out of the UK, paid there or not?

Msg 7,

Sky are obliged to limit viewing of their transmissions to the UK for Copyright reasons - they only pay for the UK viewing rights.

To this end, they disconnect any boxes that they believe are being used outside of the permitted area, and also focus the beam quite tightly (more so on some transponders than others) on the UK - this is why you need such a large dish in Cyprus - you are trying to pick up the faint 'edge' of the beam...

To use a SKY box here, you need to have provided them with a 'verified' UK address - not too difficult if you have relatives, and maintain a UK bank account based on a UK address.

There are various agencies that will do this for you, & obtain a box and viewing card.

SKY have no means of stopping you physically transporting a box out of the UK, or detecting where it is actually located.

Does that answer your question?

Keith.

Dear Pat.. re msg 7

SKY cannot knowingly supply their service outside UK / Eire..

Things like "multi-room"and new contracts with subsidised receivers MUST be left pugged into a UK/ Eire phone line, showing the telephone number...( no withheld numbers are allowed)

The SKY receiver has a built-in modem that dials a UK / Eire free phone number during the night - at random- in a response to a signal is sent - via satellite.

This applies to new contracts for the first year and always to multi-room ( where you pay more than one sub, and pay a tenner for the second or each subsequent receiver )

So, once the contract with SKY is older than one year ( excl multi-room) SKY don't know..but if you show a foreign number .. :(

( example... if you DO plug the unit into a telephone line and the receiver is requested to "report in", the call to the UK will fail - as the UK / Eire freephone don't work - but on the third attempt -it will dial 0044 or 00353 ) you lose SKY :(

a word of warning to folk subscribing to SKY ..

SKY are ( apparently ) legally obliged to renew viewing cards every five years...with a one year extension . SKY pay a company called NDS for encryption.

It is likely that many folk who have a UK/ Eire address, will have new cards sent there - when / if - this upgrade happens.. so if you have a dealer / an address where you no longer LIVE, you may need to arrange alternative arrangements.

You have been "warned"... !

re msg 2 - Baldie

it sounds like you were paying fora Showtime package viewed on the Nilesat satellite.

This is a Dubai based company - with ex BBC and SKY guys involved in the day to day running - like SKY, you "aren't supposed" to receive it and the cards are "grey market" from dealers in Arab nations that CAN get it.

The "worst" scenario is when a card is "shared" via the internet, and you see the picture one minute, and it's encrypted the next...

As with SKY, you need a friend in the country where the cards can be paid for (or a reputable dealer )

Dear Dee re msg 15

"mmmmmmm..always to ' know it all' but [k]no[w] very little!!..

Dee, I suggest you look up the link in my profile and search under Turkey.. you'll find I was there for a conference hosted by Digiturk and a TV braoscast encryption company.. There I met and became matey with my counterparts from Showtime and Digitime - where we discuss "pirates" / hackers..

Then look under Israel, and you'll see I was the guest of a TV/ data uplink centre..

You could *even* look under BBC, 4.2m Cyprus..

Dee knows "best" of course .. MM "noes" nothing about Satellite TV or encryption ;)

Hi BF - re 23 The answer depends on your circumstances.. financial and location.

The best option is a 4.2m dish and a SKY subscription - either via a friends address in the UK, or via a reputable dealer.

There are alternatives ( compromises) for those who can't / don't want a big dish

You are welcome to pm me off board...

The only thing here that is legal is dodgy TV or hotbird to pick up non encrypted channels.

What is interesting is if and a big if we have a setkement and the TRNC becomes part of the EC then the copyright laws will apply both Coldsat, dopi and supreme along with the DVD shops will sufer and of course those people who have installed them.

Hi Hippo re msg 25

It is not illegal to receive unencrypted UK channels using a big dish.. as long as the dish is legally allowed to be situated;) You don't even HAVE to use a SKY receiver !

I have spoken to the guy and only the old "magic " boxes need to be changed, anyone with the free box will be fine.

The Dopi is a very reasonably priced product, you don't need the big dish which is about £2,000 to install, and sky subscriptions with movies and sports are about £45 per monthand if you get Setanta as well, you can add another £13 to that.

If you like sport Dopi is a brilliant choice, its movie and series are pretty good as well.

Don't forget watching sky sports here is just as illegal as watching Dopi and the chances of us going into the EU anytime soon are about the same as the Aramanta owners group having a whip round to buy Garry Robb a birthday present.

re msg:28

Legal status of SKY use in Cyprus and likes of Dopi TV or Digital Supreme is totaly different.

First of all you have to understand how they work.

To view SKY channels legally you need a smart card from SKY registered to a UK address.

As long as SKY gets their money every month you are guaranteed the service.

You can argue the fact that SKY is illegal outside UK,but satellite TV has no borders so just as one can watch Digiturk in UK or Showtime in Cyprus this rule cannot be enforced.

It is estimated that SKY has over a million clients outside UK..

As for likes of Dopi & Digital Supreme, these work on a "card sharing" system.

Card sharing system is where a legal card is used in a web based server and the card information is "sold" to clients through either an internet connection (like Digital Supreme) or from satellite using an additional sat dish (like Doıpi TV)

These systems are ILLEGAL and carry heavy fines in Europe for both users and distributors.

One last bit of information to card sharing system users.

Encryption company Irdeto, which is used by Nova Greece and Showtime Arabia has decided to fight illegal "card sharing" systems by upgrading their smartcards to a much more secure version in the very near future.

New smartcard will be much more secure then the present one and will not work in card sharing servers.

Hi Hippo re msg 30

You have me "worried"... you are agreeing with me for the second time in a month ;).

If SKY know you are outside of UK / IRL they are OBLIGATED - by their agreement with the the companies with whom they sign contracts to show content limited by territory - to turn off your subscription.

As the Iceman says, BIG difference between card sharing and receiving outside the territory where broadcast.

The biggest "fine" is when a card sharing operation is closed down and you lose your money and have no TV...

Digiturk is also replacing their Irdeto cards because Irdeto has been hacked for over a year now and pirated Digiturk cards called "kebab card" was being sold inTurkey.

The DAFT thing about this was that when I went to a "anti-piracy" meeting in Istanbul Irdeto knew about this hack and it has taken a long time to get around to shipping the new cards...

Wat you need is an ICY big dish

Get rid of some of that hard earned dosh

In your pockets just dig deap

Terrestial UK TV is a reward you will reap

Iceman

Whilst i bow to your knowledge on all things satellite related, the fact is that Sky do not have the rights to broadcast premier league football to Turkey or North Cyprus, the premier league have sold them to channel 78 on digiturk which is a subscription channel, and even though you are paying the correct money to Sky every month (under false pretences) you are infringing on Digiturk who own exclusive rights for this territory, so is it ok just to break the law a little bit?

Been with DOPI for several months now, very little in the way of problems , the upgrading of the box was free, swift and painless. In my opinion DOPI is superior to Dodgy Turk and cheaper. Legalities!! personally could not give a stuff on that subject, according to 99% of the world the TRNC is illegal.

To the digital know it alls get a life, TV is for News, Knowledge and entertainment not for one upmanship.

As for a 4.2 meter dish on my property !! No Thanks !! For style, class and looks I think I would rather have a full cladding like the Duckworths on Coronation St. !!

Ref post 1,I would like to say a big well done to DOPI TV.They have had many problems with hackers trying to get into the system and are doing everything to safeguard themselves and thier customers, unlike other companies who do not give a damn as they already have your money. This is a professionally run company, you only have to look at the website/brochures to see this for yourself. It seems the old boxes cannot be updated so you were offered new ones, surely you cannot expect to be given this free of charge?Maybe it would have been better not to post such a cutting article in the heat of the moment, and to of phoned DOPI back, they are very reasonable people and im sure this could have been sorted without any bad feeling. This is the best value for money sat system in the North, even Showtime is more expensive and with far far less viewing channels.

I must admit I promised a few months ago to post my experiences about having Dopi TV installed. Well here we go: Two guys turned up to install the equipment exactly when they said they would. There was no external cable running as they found a cable conduit access underneath the roof tiles. All done in about 3 hours. No mess and no payment made until the boss came out to check the installation. Happy with the variety of English language channels available ( well 'her indoor is') A few minor issues which the new software installation has rectified so we are happy bunnies. And if they keep to their £150 a year subscription promise then it is well worth it.
