Don't know if this will help but neighbours had a container delivered and all the boxes inside had a list of contents taped to them in Turkish and English, they did not seem to have any problems. Graham

I have just sent a container to TRNC with relatively little hassle. Things you need to lookout for are flatpacks, I would assemble them new goods will attract duty and they are a dead giveaway, as will all electrical appliances such as your white goods and especially televisions. At the end of the day it also depends on how the customs officers are feeling on that particular night (almost always after six when they deliver as they get paid overtime). My next door neighbour got away with paying £40.00 duty I had to cough up £600.00. I have no regrets about sending over a container and I paid the excess quite happily I recon bringing in my own stuff from UK more than paid for the container. But beware I think I got of quite lightly.

So in your opinions do the customs people generally charge everyone duty for something they are bringing over. Obvioulsy like most i have a couple of new items is it best to remove all packaging and bubble wrap as if a used item or will they still pick up on it? any tips would be great. Also UKTurk you seem to be the brains with tv, sky etc. Im looking for a small dish which enables me to receive some english channels and films not bothered about sport channels what would you recommend and costs please iceman couldnt help

Yes remove all packaging and I suggest if possible use the new items. We had to pay duty but that was only because we brought over a wood burner with back boiler and generator. We asked if we should scratch the generator to make it look old/used but were told not to worry, consequently we had to pay duty on both of those items. Saucepans etc just boil some water in to discolour them slightly. Use the kettle and Iron. They don't touch anything that looks like its not new. Hope this helps Karen

hi jacko when you are transporting your goods like karen said make sure if you do buy new to take them out of your orignal packaging you wont go wrong, to tell you the truth thou its mostly on electrical goods you have to do this cos this is the most tax you pay on goods other things are very minamal if any so dont worry bout saucepans and stuff like that and a general guide i would say only bring one of everything electrical cos lets say you bring 2 tv's they will sting you on the tax ok now sat tv there are two options you can go for other than sky, firstly is a system called digiturk with this all you pay for is 45ytl £18 for the dish which is your to keep and 40ytl £15 for install you get a box which is rented and given back once you cancel the service the cheapest package starts from 19.90 £8 and is called ekonomik paket in this you get a quite a few english channels bbc prime (bbc1 spinoff) - e2 - cnbce - bbc world news - hallmark - mgm - mtv - history channel - 2 national geo channels - zone reality - eurosport and a few kids channels or if you pay 43.90ytl £17 you will get all the above aswell as 4 movie channels - comedy max (all american comedy programes) - dizimax and fox life (sitcom programmes) the other alternative is buying 2 90cm dishes a normal reciever (next ye2000fta i reconmend) one dish pointed at a satelite called hotbird and the other pointed at a satelite called nilesat with this you will get loads of english channels like movies-general entertainment -music and many more this system only will set you back around 300ytl - 150pound and no monthly payments and is yours to keep hope this help and if you need any more help or info please contact me or post me regards ukturk

If you are not packing the boxes yourself, try and keep an eye on what the packers write on them - if the customs open a box and it doesn't contain what it says it should, you could find that they open more than they would normally. As ukturk says, they're not really concerned about pots and pans, it just the big money items!!
