Man killed visiting newborn son

The victim's three-year-old daughter was unhurt

A 26-year-old man was stabbed to death as he travelled to hospital with his young daughter to visit his wife who had just given birth to a boy.

He became involved in an argument with a second man and died "in front of his daughter's eyes" in Croydon, south London, police said.

A 22-year-old man was arrested and is in custody at a south London police station.

Det Ch Insp Cliff Lyons described the murder as "particularly tragic".

He said the man's three-year-old daughter had not been injured in the attack on Thursday evening.

The man was attacked outside a Lidl supermarket in London Road, close to West Croydon railway station, at 1815 GMT.

'Shocking attack'

The victim was taken to Mayday Hospital where he was pronounced dead an hour later.

Mr Lyons said: "This was a shocking attack in a public place in the early evening.

"The victim's three year-old daughter w

This is truly a very shocking incident, unfortunately it is not rare to hear of stories like this, what a contrast in emotions, to go from all the joy and elation of having a new born child, then , in the blink of an eye all has changed to so much sadness and despair for this mans family.

What is truly shocking is that one person was walking the streets yet again with a weapon. Why was that person carrying a weapon. Why do the young people of today think the only way they can deal with an incident is to stab, shoot the other party. The mother, the new baby, who will never know its father. Yes, its truly shocking.

When this 22 year old man goes to court for trial he will sit in court, smile and laugh, this has happened in all the recent cases of mindless acts of murder and rape.

How can human beings behave like this even after the event, have they no comprehension of what they have done-- a 3 year old child watched their father butchered in front of them and its all one big joke to them.

Shows the desperate state the Uk is in, a gradual decline in moral standards, a tolance to fellow mankind and youth that is out of control due to inadiquate parenting skills and a justice system that rewards the criminal and penalises the victim.

Get these knife weilding thugs into a correction system that has a bite, sod human rights.

Can we also include the TRNC in your analysis, 2 murders reported this week, considering the very small population ,compared with the UK?

I agree with what you say, but here in TRNC the punishments fit the crimes, not so in UK, as we know in UK. prison inmates food allowances are double that of a hospital patient. Some pensioners are struggling to keep warm and eat well, what a contrast.

Quarmby, quite right.

If there were two murders this week, then it only needs one more in the the rest of the whole year, for theTRNC to have a worst murder rate than UK.

Whats the betting on that not happening

One can quite happily live in the TRNC without automatically slagging the UK.

My heart goes out to the family I only hope the child ,with love and help can forget the sight.

May have had a 2 murders here, but what we dont see is the horrific scale of knife crime that is present in the uk at the momment. The muslim culture teaches respect from a young age, this no longer seems the case in the Uk.

I do not think that national service is the answer. By the time they reach the age for such service, some of these mindless, heartless thugs have been immersed in wrongdoings for years. The root cause (in my opinion) is in the way these youngsters are treated when young.

DN message 12

Agree with that ,its a valued argument and we can debate the reasons,

I was just bothered that a thread about a tragic murder was used as an excuse to again make out the UK is worse than hell and the reason we leave. Now we find the murder rate in NC is actually going to be higher than UK ,would that mean we should move back, of course not. Some of us are retiring in NC because a retirement in a country with nice climate and slower pace suits a us more ,thats all .Life wherever you go is full of pros and cons and its up to the individual to weigh one against the other.

Thanks to the Oh so terrible Uk ,I am in a position that I can afford to retire abroad, and have manged to survive nearly 60 years with, a good education, good health care, reasonable salary, without being murdered. So ,cant have been all that bad!

I agree with your sentiments fully, but isn't it because of the way the situation has become out of hand in Uk regarding crime that this thread started.

I retired here also, but I still worry about my Sons and grandchildren and what future there is for them back there. Just seen headlines on Internet of a young boy killed on a railway line in N. Ireland trying to get away from a gang of youths chasing him, yet another young life snuffed out through mindless thuggery

girne 29,

I like yourself have been well looked after by Great Britain, served my country and I'm red white and blue through & through. Unfortunatly the place is no longer the England I knew and loved. Changes have taken place and not many of them for the better, for these reason like many of us here, I decided to get out. One of my greatest wishes is that one day the Uk will get back on its feet, unfortunatly I dont think it will be in my life time. Crime among many other issues, is out of control as deterents are not addressing the problem, things are not going to improve until the system & atittudes to criminals change and the sooner the better. I'd go for a more aggresssive approach, bring back hanging and hard labour for a start.

I totally agree with your post, we have done quite well through the past years in the UK which has enabled us to fulfill our dream of living in the sun. Of course it,s not perfect, nowhere is, but I can think of worse places to live. Sickening crimes happen everywhere unfortunately, perhaps because some people have no regard for human life, but that is not the fault of the country, that is the responsibility of the individual concerned.

Hattie.

I agree with the sentiments that countries do change and not necessarily perceived for the better, I think a country that has changed considerably in the last 6 years is the TRNC and not for the better. Perhaps all those complaining about the changes in the UK should consider how much the TRNC has changed because of the influx of foreigners, yes the locals probably welcomed the money cows but now the milk appears to have dried up and many are now returning to the UK and other destinations, there is a feeling going about ,that the locals are not so enthusiastic about their foreign 'friends' as they once were. Perhaps they don't think it's their country anymore just like the Brits feel about the UK.
