Mr Wick was fireman in Poplar for 20 years although he did, during that time, work at West Norwood Fire Station for a couple of years. I am originally from the very genteel London Borough of Bexley and my son was born in the British Hospital in Woolwich. Come on all you lot from South of the Border (i.e. the Watford Gap).

Cruggs your bringing back too many good memories for me. I spent 23 years on the Downham Estate, Churchdown Rd. Mum and Dad 44 years. Peter Pans pool where was most of my childhood was spent, used to love having my hand stamped to get in. Also know Brownhill Road Catford. Wicks is correct Mr Smiths was a well known nightclub that was closed down due to an "affray" there by the "Richardson gang". As for the Rochester Way before it was all changed I used to go out with a guy at 170 Rochester Way, his house was compulsory purchased to make way. There used to be a pub opposite. Wicks the Black Prince has changed now I think into some Hotel, yes so many changes everywhere but love to go there and see it all. I live near Margate now, not quite the same. Anyway will be told off as not talking about NC. Good to know people are nearby though. Regards

This song's of a beggar who long lost his sight, And had a fair daughter, most pleasant and bright, And many a gallant brave suitor had she, And none was so comely as pretty Bessee. And though she was of complexion most fair, And seeing she was but a beggar his heir, Of ancient housekeepers despised was she, Whose sons came as suitors to pretty Bessee. Wherefore in great sorrow fair Bessee did say: 'Good father and mother, let me now go away, To seek out my fortune, whatever it be.' This suit then was granted to pretty Bessee. This Bessee, that was of a beauty most bright, They clad in grey russet; and late in the night From father and mother alone parted she, Who sighed and sobbed for pretty Bessee.

She went till she came to Stratford-at-Bow, Then she know not whither or which way to go, With tears she lamented her sad destiny; So sad and so heavy was pretty Bessee. She kept on her journey until it was day, And went unto Rumford, along the highway; And at the King's Arms entertained was she, So fair and well favoured was pretty Bessee. She had not been there one month at an end, But master and mistress and all was her friend: And every brave gallant that once did her see, Was straightway in love with pretty Bessee. Great gifts they did send her of silver and gold, And in their songs daily her love they extolled: Her beauty was blazed in every decree, So fair and so comely was pretty Bessee

Did you know the Tigers Head pub just before Catford, that was my local haunt every Friday night. Cruggs is that where you are in Ramsgate, I am over there tomorrow, day off work. Yes it was snowing quite hard and I am in doors all wrapped up!!!! |

Speaking for myself, I have really enjoyed this thread today. It's brought back some good memories, even though a lot of the old places have closed down. Don't know what I expected - we're all on a trip down memory lane in the 60's and 70's!!! It has shown what a small world it is, too. Thanks, from us, to everyone who has contributed. It's brightened up a cold (and now very snowy) Sunday. Cheers P & J

Well Cruggs it does get better, the King and Queen pub was my grandads local Alf Chessman. If you get my mum started on the good old days she always comes up with the King and Queen pub. As for Elmstead woods always went there looking for cob nuts!! Meal at the Toby, you'll be lucky if its coffee at Costa!!! Take care along that wind tunnel!!!

Thanks for more memories, Paul ps I also went in The Yorkshire Grey in my lunch break, what a good school Eltham Green was. |

| Eager thanks for all the updates & information, glad to see Eltham Green turned out at least two well rounded citizens & then they turned us out. To all the other Londoners & the ones who escaped to Essex ( why would anyone want to move to Essex lol, I worked at Poplar Fire station & there was only 2 of us from south of the river, the rest lived in Essex, we took a lot of stick) thanks for sharing. Firestarter I think we could have a pretty good quiz team, but would they be able to find us any opposition. As Capt Oakes said "I'm going out now and may be some time", will this snow ever stop. | The Wicks, Paul & Jean, funny isn't when you mention these landmarks "The Yorkshire Gray" you think Ahh yes remember that. I never went inside but just always remember it being there. You've mentioned Poplar Firestation, my Dad worked at Poplar Power Station. It just brings memories. All these big pubs would never have lasted now. Does anyone remember the "Downham Tavern" what a place that was. Those of you from North London, what about "Tottenham Royal" and the "Royal" Tottenham. I used to go dancing at these places, they were great. |

Hi dalartokat. Yup, I remember the Downham Tavern. Further afield (if you managed to have a boyfriend with a car) Streatham Locarno, Croydon Suite, all dressed up in our best frocks. In my early 20's used to frequent pubs in the Old Kent Road (I knew how to live) my favourite being The Prince of Wales, by the gas works. Also used to be known as "Teddy Haynes pub". Don't suppose anyone remembers The Bon Bonne in Herne Hill? I really hit the big time when I used to go dancing at The Lyceum. Friends I worked with in London always talked about the Tottenham Royal. And to think, I always felt I was a disappointment to my Mum!!!

daver - indeed, Clerkenwell, Hoxton, etc. have changed over the years. Watched a property programme some time ago and was amazed at the house prices in the area. A London cabbie was selling an ex-council flat in Clerkenwell and the asking price was, I think, in the region of some £300,000! Of course, prices have dropped now, but even so. J

I used to go to the Old Kent Road also, what was the famous pub at the time "Apples and Pears", my friend at the time came from Tottenham so we used to take turns she would come south one weekend and then I would go north the next. I dont know the one in Herne Hill your talking about though. Happy Days. Wyn whats London pudding?? |

| Chick, message 132. Indeed, the title is there "for all to see". Double standards springs to mind. Some people just cannot bear being "left out". I'm sure, by reading others' comments, that this thread has proved to be very popular. Regarding the Pie & Mash, Paul favoured Goddards in Deptford High Street. By the way, Jellied Eels - my late Mum's favourite! Every time I went over the Roman Road, I used to take her some back and if I took her with me, she'd queue for ages for Pie, Mash and liquor! | Eager, message 130. I can't believe I've found someone who used to go to the Bonne. I thought it was a great place; great atmosphere, really great music and, when you think of where it was situated, little or no trouble. Every time I hear a Boz Scaggs record, it takes me back! Great that someone else remembers it. Best wishes. J PS Do you remember "The Barnaby" just off the Old Kent Road by any chance? |

Jean, yes I do remember the stall outside the pie shop, he used to put everything in a pile and then start all over again if you couldnt make your mind up you had to wait till he started again. Just as good as Harrods!! those were the days.

chick, I think "the stall outside the pie shop" says it all, dont't you? Blimey, we lived life in the Fast Lane then!! Mind you, I was always very well dressed, with Stewart's "seconds". Do you remember, you had to wait there for ages, as you said, while he went through the pile and then you had to wait until that dress you saw (for about 2 quid) came around again? I remember taking my Son (who is now 28) up there one Saturday in the summer, waiting for ages for the "pile" to turn over again, and his poor little head got all red, where he'd taken his sun hat off (he was only 2). I managed to drag Paul up there in later years, but he was no fun, he used to go and sit in the pub along the road until I'd finished my bargain hunting. Don't know about you, but markets are not what they used to be! Great to share this! Love J

Please don't criticise Wyn- he's a closet cockney at heart, and he's definitely frightened of being left out. Jackie and I are both from Stratford [for your benefit Wyn, E15, not on Avon]. I moved to the genteel environs of Leigh on Sea 47 years ago when I was 6, Jackie followed 6 years ago. Goonerstan- you've gone a bit quiet. Have my boys kept Arsene quiet? What i can agree with you is I won't shed too many tears if "The Tottenham" go down. I suppose we'll all find out sooner or later that Wyn supports Millwall!!!! This is Jackie here - The Roman is not what it used to be (my son lived in Bow for a couple of years) all the lovely pubs have closed but Kelly's is still there. Someone somewhere has ripped the guts out of the East End - I went to school in Forest gate - the ancient pub 'The Spotted Dog' has closed it's a terrible, terrible shame. I visit the East End sometimes (I have friends who live in Hackney) I just want to cry. Musin, an aunt of mine used to live in Sewardst

Hi Arthur & Jackie. Loved your post. I am not entirely convinced that Wyn is a closet cockney, but you never know!! Interesting to see how many of us, over the years, have moved out of London, isn't it? In my defence, my Dad was a lifelong Spurs supporter and Paul is a Chelsea supporter, but, somehow we can't see Wyn down Coldblow Lane! Jackie - yes, it's such a shame that they've ripped the guts out of the East End - I was born and bred over the other side of the water but always loved the East End. Keep in touch - I really like to hear stories about London in the "old days", i.e. when I was young!! Best regards. Jean x

I used to have my lunch in a pub called `The Dirty Dicks` just outside Liverpol Street Station that really was a spit and sawdust pub but the atmosphere was great, my mum would`ve had a fit if she`d known especialy as she used to make me a packed lunch! but me and my colleagues used to have such a laugh.

Let's keep this thread going - so many memories about our beloved City - Jean many of us have moved out - south Londoners normally end up in Kent and the East Enders come to Essex. Perhaps us gels can get together sometime in NC we will, of course, all share the same sense of humour that others perhaps might find a bit weird. Have a lovely day Jackie x

Born in Dublin (you'd never guess from the nickname,eh?) grew up in Archway, got married moved around a bit and am now settled in Broadway Market, very near London Fields. I went to London Fields yesterday to take photo's of virgin snow but lots of other people had the same idea so got a few pic's of snowmen. Iced in today, no work got a text informing me last night. Have a good day people. There is a pie & mash shop its just not my cup of tea.

hi eager, thanks for that info just goe's to show i am not that bright either.so now i must apologize to all the millwall fans,ok sorry, there done it. eager, do you know if the prince of wales, and the porcupine pub are still there, the porcupine was down by the war memorial in in mottingham village, and where the petrol station now is it was a bomb site,as we as kid's went there to get the ball bearings, from the wheels of the wrecked car's for marbles,it was either a car showroom or a garage, but i dont know which. also there was a path by the garage that took us down to the quaggie a little steam, that we spent many a happy hour playing in.yes nostalgia indeed those were the days. thank's firestarter, and everyone for such an informative, and nostalgic thread well at least for we londoners, but i suppose you can't please everyone. have a nice day all.

Another East London/Essex girl here. Born Wanstead (E11) then moved to Brentwood in 1975. Fond memories of The Room at the Top and the Ilford Palais and if we were feeling posh, the Epping Forest Country Club!! It was definitely the Goldmine at Canvey and also Zero Six and TOTTS in Southend in the mid-80's but spent most weekends at Dukes in Chelmsford. Firestarter, my best friend from junior school Nicola Jefcoat moved to Chigwell and went to West Hatch though she would be about 42 now.

This has got much too 'Luvvy'! Time to stir things up! Why is it that the West End is 'Posh' and the East End,.. errr ..isn't? Why does the Queen have a weekend pad at Windsor, not Barking? Same goes for almost every large town/City in the UK. 'West is best',.. 'East is least'! If Geoff (chessman) was around, he'd know the answer, so I suppose we'll have to 'slum' it with a stab at the answer from Bill (No1),.. Rob

Cruggs & Eager, the Saxon Tavern, is that what it was always called because I worked in a pub at the top of the hill with Tigers Head on the right and the big pub at the top on the left. I was a cloakroom girl. A northern guy came down and turned it into a nightclub, I have photos but cannot remember the name. Also worked in the big pub at the top of Whitefoot Lane, was it the Northover or Southover, pass Foster Park and keep going toward Hither Green Cemetary and it was on the right. If you came from Downham Tavern and turned left the big pub would be on the left. Yes knew the Baring Pub as used to commute to London from Grove Park Station. Bladerunner mess 163. This is coincidental. My sister went to Mallory School. I have just contacted a friend who lived off Reigate Road, Shroffold Road right at the end toward Reigate Road after 38 years thru Friends Reunited. I also was going to the dance hall at the back of the Tigers Head in 1971. cont....

arthur re post 142 the spotted dog landlord eddie johnson use to live near us when we moved to suffolk. lesley re post 169 its called kings now at canvey island, friends of friends own it all. essoxOB yes i remember the ilford palais, i lived in ilford for a while in balfour rd. epping forest country club was another one, and the retreat in chigwell. after that we moved on to illegal raves. jo re post 172 i know her pretty well, she was two years below me at school, she was in a old friends class. i didn't hang out with them as they were not my sort of crowd. we were the wild child types and she was a bit of a whinge and a grass. did you see much of her after primary school? last but not least wyn, wyn most cypriots have lived or have family and friends in london. many class themselves as london cypriots, hence i recon it does have something to do with the trnc! p.s. east enders is not like real london life, just for the record.

Before this hits the 250 mark & comes to a stop. It is amazing how many people have a London connection. We all seem to have places that hold a special memory for us, but what is more amazing is how many people cross over into each others lives. All parts of London merge, we all seem to have travelled north, south, east & west. From Kings road to the Old Kent road, from Tottenham High road to Seven Kings.. Without demeaning the other post that tried to rival this, the soft southern jessies seem to be a closer lot than any of us may have thought. My thanks to Firestarter for starting the thread & to everyone who has rekindled memories that perhaps we have not thought about for some time. Ladies & Gentleman a toast ! Maybe because we are Londoners that we remember London town. The Wicks

Bladerunner mess 220. When you mentioned the Harts are you talking about the family, because I used to go to school with Laura Hart who lived right at the end of Shroffold Road just before Reigate. Her uncle, I think his name was "Tommy Hart" was involved in the affray at Mr Smiths. Just up a bit from them was the Doyle family, Bernie Doyle, Stephen Doyle etc. Viper mess 216. Yes used to go to the Royal Oak also. Does anyopne remember The Bridgehouse Pub, not sure if it was Canning Town, they used to have "drag artists" every Saturday night, that used to be a good night out. Did anyone used to go to "The Pumphouse" at Hastings on Bank Holidays, always remember the song "Bad Moon rising"

Thanks for that. |

dalartokat - re The Round House. Yes, it was in Canning Town. I never went but a bloke I worked with in the City was a big fan of the place. I remember he used to call it "The Rand Aase". His name was Norman Dear and if I remember, he had a brother, Brian Dear, who I think used to play for Mi'wa'. Keep 'em coming - I don't think the "other side" like the fact that this one has proved so popular! LOL Regards J

Jean whereabouts did you work in London, I worked Nat West, then Gallaghers, cigarette people at Walbrook, Singer & Friedlander Merchant Bank until I left to have my son. All between 1968 and 1978, with other jobs in between. Have we mentioned the Dutchhouse Pub and the "Old Tigers Head Pub" Lee Green

Dalar - well, got to rack my brains a bit here. First of all, Paul, who I should tell you is only 51, worked at Nat West at Chancery Lane & Holborn branch from 1974, Temple Bar branch and Holborn Hall until leaving to join the London Fire Brigade. I started work in 1967 at Sun Life Assurance in Fenchurch Street. From there, went to a Dutch Shipping Company, Van Ommeren (or something like that) until about 1969 and from there, went to work at Chandris Lines (Greek Shipping Company) just off Liverpool Street. Stayed there for a few years. Do you remember when you could leave a job in the morning and have a new one by lunchtime? I did have a friend who worked for Gallaghers, her name was Pauline Best. She later took up hairdressing. I did used to play netball up at Lincoln's Inn Fields during lunch breaks and also at St Botolph's courts just off Liverpool Street during this time. I should point out that my legs were a lot better then! I left the City and went to work locally.Cont.

Jean I used to play Netball for Gallghers. I will find out about Pauline Best, because another friend worked there a bit longer than me, she might know. I worked at Sun Life as a temp, did quite a bit of that and yes definately found jobs a lot quicker than today. Used to go Petiticoat Lane in the lunch hour.

Continued. Went to work locally in Sidcup. Got married, got divorced, had my only child, sorry, not in that order, (son - light of my life, by the way) in 1980. I started work as a junior shorthand/typist - my Mum always said it would earn me a living and, to be honest (although obviously no longer junior) it has. Looking back, I don't know how we got away with a lot of things in those days. Working in the City, we used to disappear off to the pub at around 12.30, get back to the office at about 3.00 and then go home!! It's great to "speak" to people of a similar background and it would be great to meet up, if the opportunity arises. With love and best wishes. J

Jean, when I worked at Singers we used to be next door to the Financial Times building and there was a guy who used to leave at 12, come back at 2 and then disappear again until 3. The pub used to be just around the corner called "The Seahorse". Yes would also like that when the weather breaks.

Dalar - sorry, our messages have obviously overlapped, but I do know for a fact that Pauline Best also used to play netball for Gallagher's. She was a very attractive blonde girl, and a great laugh. Bit spoilt by Mummy & Daddy. She married Neil Fitzgerald, who owns the "Village Barber" in New Eltham. The Chinbrook - didn't it become a Steakhouse? - Eager may have some information on this. This is now getting a bit spooky - we may have met in a previous life. I, too, used to go to Petticoat Lane in my lunch-hour. J

As this thread draws to a close, who agrees that is has probably been one of the most successful threads on this Forum? There has been no animosity, has drawn (I hope) people together and shown - to those who have bleated on about us "Southerners" - that we are made of sterner stuff than they have ever given us credit for. So, although I didn't start this thread - Firestarter, it was a brilliant idea - I will say a huge "THANK YOU" to you all. I should explain that I will be at work all day tomorrow and will not see the Big 250!! N.B. Anyone want to help organise a get together round about June?? J

One of my earliest memories in N London (late 50's?) was going with my mum to Sainsbury in Kingsbury. All tiled & mosaic floors, Mahogony counters with marble tops, rotund staff in crisp white aprons, bacon & sausages wrapped in paper, tea personally blended from wooden bins behind the counter, brass hydraulic tubes taking the money up to accounts in shuttle tubes, then waiting for them to 'swish' back down with the change! 'Would you like the lad to deliver this on his bike this afternoon'? Then,.. one day in the 60's ,..... 'We have this wonderful new product,.. Yoghurt!' That was the end of civilisation!! Rob

Can I thank whoever took the posting limit off of this thread, if one post deserves to keep going then this is the one. This may not be the happy clappy board but this is certainly a happy thread, keep it going. Paul

| Do you remember the number 47 bus, it ran from Shoreditch to Farnborough (Kent). Also the 228 from Greenwich to Chislehurst. Going back to the 60's these were not just bus rides they were an adventure. But back to the subject we seem to like the best. Pubs! The one's at the ends of these bus routes, Chislehurst, The Ramblers Rest, The Tigers Head at Farnborough The Change Of Horses, I won't name them all otherwise you might think I have a drink problem,so let's see how many you can come up with. | Hi The-Wicks. 47 starting at Shoreditch didnt have a pub, but it had a smashing coffee stall. Why was they called coffee stalls ? no one drunk coffee. We used to get on the 47 to Farnborough with our bottle of lemonade (made with sherbet powder) and jam sandwich and thought we were going on a holiday. |

Msg265. Thats no excuse, would you believe my friends Mum who was really a gypsy at heart still went pea and fruit picking until a few years ago she must have been 80. Her hut was like our front room all mod cons. I,m not sure but until a few years ago there were still some farms hand picking. So we are not that ancient.

| Bladerunner- I used to go to Saturday morning pictures at the Odeon Deptford Broadway, so different song, but I can't remember what it was. I had a feeling the old Robertson factory may have gone. While on the subject of places of work, my first Saturday job was Liptons Eltham High St, the second Chris Wellard Records, New Cross almost next door to the Amersham Arms, there I go pubs again. | My aunt and cousins all went hop-picking somewhere "down in Kent". Looking back, it was probably no more than about 20 miles from where we lived. I have mentioned this before, ages ago on another thread, but who, out of all you lot, went to Leysdown for their holidays? I did receive a few replies before, but now that we're all in a similar boat on this thread, any takers? I'm talking round about the mid-late 50's and early 60's. Jean |

The Hopping Song Now hopping's just beginning, We've got our time to spend. We've only come down hopping, To earn a quid if we can With a tee-I-ay, tee-I-ay, tee-I-ee-I-ay. Now early Monday morning, The measurer he'll come round. "Pick your hops all ready, You'll pick them off the ground.: With a tee-I-ay, tee-I-ay, tee-I-ee-I-ay

Now early Tuesday morning, The bookie he'll come round With a bag of money, He'll flop it on the ground. Saying, "Do you want some money?" "Yes sir if you please, To buy a hock of bacon And a roll of mouldy cheese". With a tee-I-ay, tee-I-ay, tee-I-ee-I-ay. They say all hopping's lousy, I believe it's true. Since I've been down hopping, I've got a chat or two. With a tee-I-ay, tee-I-ay, tee-I-ee-I-ay. Early Saturday morning, It is our washing day. We'll boil 'em in our hopping pot, And we hang's 'em o'er the ground. With a tee-I-ay, tee-I-ay, tee-I-ee-I-ay. I say one, I say two, No more hopping shall I do. With a tee-I-ay, tee-I-ay, tee-I-ee-I-ay.

Bladerunner mess.246 yes remember the seafood stall outside Baring pub and the little market. Did you remember years ago also the cafe that was outside Peter Pans pool opposite Tigers Head Pub, it used to be open late at night Jean yes it is spooky but a nice spooky though. I cannot believe that I have spoke to people now that remember Robertsons Jam Factory because my mum worked there and she worked in the Glennifer Laundry. She used to come home at 1.00pm exhausted and in the school holidays we had to look after ourselves and go down to downham at the Home&Colonial and get 4ozs spam and over the road to Bells fish shop and 6d chips each. 47 bus to Bromley and if anything happened in London I knew I could get the 47 bus home and the 141. The 141 bus used to also take me on a Saturday night all the way to Tottenham to meet my friend who lived off Black Boy Lane(dont know if you can say that anymore) Falmer Road. Used to go to Lewisham Odeon for pictures. cont

cont, yes Catford also for Saturday mornings and used to go round the back and let my friends in through the double doors so they did not pay!!! As for Chislehust thats where my Dad was brought up and my nan used to work for the "Tiarchs" (spelling) as a cleaner. Know the Ramblers Rest and Chislehurst Common also. Dad went to school around there also, its still there. Cruggs there used to be a cinema at Downham also called the "bughutch" it used to be opposite "Valentines" garage and the Gas Showrooms. I have enjoyed all this reminising too and would love to meet you all. Jean my aunty used to have "Ivys cafe" at Avery Hill New Eltham. Just got home from work and its been great, thanks because this thread I have been able to enjoy joining in.

dalar - spam and chips!! Bit of a staple diet in those days. Still "never did us any harm". You used to go to the Home & Colonial (I remember the shops well) and I used to go to Liptons and get 2ozs of spam for my lunch (it was called dinner then). My Mum was an office cleaner and she worked bloody hard. We had bugger all, but we did always have a cooked dinner on the table at 6o'clock (lots of spuds). As someone on here said earlier, during the summer holidays as kids, you went "out to play" and came in when your mum called you - for food. I think we used to call all old-fashioned picture houses "Bughutches" in those days!. Paul lived at Avery Hill from when he was 11 until he was in his early 20's, in Restons Crescent opposite "Blackboy" pub. Not sure you can say that now either!!

Message 285 - ah - phone tapping. We never had a phone at home (not many of us did on our council estate) so, used to go phone tapping to call those friends who did!! I became quite good at it. I went to a Grammar School (probably the proudest day of my late Mum's life - she told the whole neighbourhood) and, consequently, met some "posh" girls. Needless to say, by the time I reached the 4th year, had gravitated towards all those from the same background. I am still in touch with some old schoolfriends, and,I have to say, bring back selective education. It gave a lot of us, apparently bright kids, from "poorer" backgrounds a good chance in life. Will now get off by soapbox - sorry!! J

hi dalartokat,i remember going to paddock wood with my parents hop picking, in the 1950s and we lived in small one family huts, with wooden bunk- beds.and one small light dangling from the ceiling and a primus stove for cooking.outside the hut was a large drum full of water for washing up and making tea.when every body weighed in their hop's they would then be given token's too spend in the local shops or the pub.have a good week end. p.s did not see you at debenhams the other day, but it was not a wasted journey, as i found a voucher for the toby carvery for a meal for a fiver so wil use it tomorrow.just sent my wife out to look for another one, then i can take her as well.

Cruggs mess 303. Yes was up there shopping and Monday too in that rotten weather. You tight thing waiting for vouchers, where did you get the first one from??? Bladerunner mess 289. Yes that was it the Splendid. I just about remember it being there but Mum always spoke about it because Mum and Dad used to take turns in going there as the other one looked after us as kids. Yes also remember the Council yard in Downham Way and all the shops mentioned in Bromley. Ravel shoe shop used to be on the corner in the market square.

dalar - Paul remembers Ravels being on the corner in the market square. Since starting work in 1967, I only every bought Ravel shoes. I used to get mine in Lewisham at the time. By the way, anyone remember the Wimpy Bar in Lewisham, by the church? By a very strange coincidence, the first time we went to N.C. (1989 I think) we picked a place at random from a brochure (they were hard to come by then). The place we chose was "The Esprit" in Alsancak. The owner of the place looked vaguely familiar. We had a meal in the restaurant at Esprit and the menus were styled in the old Wimpy Bar way. When they brought the bill (it was so cheap then, we thought a mistake had been made) he came over and asked was everything OK. We said it was fine and "almost as cheap as a Wimpy Bar". He looked puzzled and then laughed. Yes, it was Charlie who ran the Wimpy in Lewisham for years! Sadly, Charlie died a couple of years ago. Talk about a small world! J

Jean what a good story. I'm trying to picture where the church was you are talking about. When I lived in NC there was a guy who opened up a greengrocers in the parade of shops opposite the big DIY store past Courtyard going onto Pia Bella. The shops were on the left laying back. He came from Lewisham, he used to know the Roebuck pub just up from Lewisham Odeon. Talking about Lewisham Odeon, saw the Small Faces there and we went around the side and they were hanging out of a window and they sprayed the white foam stuff(you get at Xmas time) and I got covered, I was thrilled to bits!!!!! Think I was 15.

dalar - the Church and the Wimpy were more or less opposite C & A. Also near to the Green Shield Stamp shop and Brentford Nylons - God, remember Brentford Nylons? My mum was a big fan of both Green Shield Stamps and Brentford Nylons - you got into bed and the static was incredible (not in a good way!) Paul saw Rockin' Rod at Lewisham Odeon. PS Used to love Stevie Marriott!!!! J

Chiesmans, not any more, the site now houses a huge police station. the odeon was knocked down many years ago, likewise the parade of shops and pub [Cambridge] across the road. Incidently does anyone remember when the clocktower in the high street got moved, about 20ft to make way for a wider road, in the 80s.

This really has been a walk down memory lane, Ken you may not have been able to get to work because of the floods of "68", I had a day off school! Dalar, every Saturday I was dragged round Chiesmans by my parents, to get to the toy section in the basement you had to go through the china section & it was "don't touch, keep away" all the way through, happy days. On a sadder note the train crash at Hither green in "67" & at Eltham Well hall in "72". I know there was another one at Lewisham in "57" but that was the year I was born, so I can be forgiven for not actually remembering that one. Regards Paul

Hi dalartokat. Camden Market is in Camden. Camden Passage was and still is I think the antiques market. The market opposite is Chapel Street only market in that area open on a Sunday used to be jammed packed. All the builders in the area got there timber from Andersons.

Re : Angel Lane - The Railway Tavern was on Angel Lane, it had an early licence for the railway workers - The Lion I think was near the market. There was an ancient cottage opposite the The Railway and someone told me that it had been knocked down 'by mistake'. I believe it is being re-built. Maryland Point!! What memories - who remembers the shop 'Sweets', they had money exchange things flying through the air, it was wonderful!! There was a gentlemen's outfitters and a wonderful jewellers with beautiful display cabinets (sadly now a kebab shop) what a wonderful Labour Council the London borough of Newham has to allow the distruction of beautiful buildings that belong to our culture. Very sad indeed.

Hi eager You have brought back memories The Green Man in Catford, that was a night to remember. Sixteen, out for the night with a friend and our boyfriends. Dancing all evening, missed the last bus home so we decided to walk but forgot how far West Wickham was from there. Very late when we got back staying at my friends, locked out. We had to climb through the window, you guessed it, her Mum was waiting for us, not very impressed, at after 4 in the morning. Grounded!!!! Does anyone remember The Orchid dance hall in Croydon?

fire starter - Re : Maryland Point - I am going back to when I was a child during the 60's, I don't think it was that bad. It is grim now though - but come to think about it most places were not that bad really. I am being old fashioned perhaps, but people used to keep 'their fronts' nice and tidy and their houses in order. It is official that if you are white and live in the London Borough of Newham you are in the minority.

The biggest coincidense I have ever had was when we first came out to Cyprus 4 years ago to live. We helped a friend in his bar, the 'marlborough bar' in Girne. I got chatting to one of the customers who was over here on holiday, normal sorts of converstion, where do you come from in the Uk etc. Kent was the reply and having been born in Bromley and spent all my childhood there we had a very interesting chat. The conversation went on to where he was now living. The converstion went as follows Him - I now live in Biggin Hill Me - I lived in Biggin Hill for awhile, where abouts in Biggin Hill Him - A road called Upper Drive Me - So did I what nos. Him - Nos 10 Me - So did I And no it was'nt my husband so how spooky is that!!!!!!!!

| South London born in Streatham, well actually born in Kings College Hospital, Camberwell! Last lived in Battersea, have worked in Covent Garden, Notting Hill, Old Street etc...! went to college in Hammersmith! But haven't lived in London full time for about 8 years! Think most if not all of the London Turkish Cypriots are from North London... there are a few in my building that come over for holidays, sometimes I wake up to them talking across their balconies in their cockney accents & wonder where I am!
