As far as I know if Greek Cypriots find purchase documents for property in TRNC you will be held for questioning.

I left through Paphos last July and left my documents with friends in Girne.

YES...YES...YES

Don't give them the opportunity.....even if you've bought Pre-74 turkish Title deeds.

The same applies when travelling back to Larnaca after your stay and being stopped and searched at the border.

steviec - don't panic too much here. If anything, they tend to check North - South. However, I have never heard of anyone being searched - just a check in your suitcases. If in any doubt, keep documents such as these on your person.

Having said that, it very much depends on who's on duty when you cross over.

Hope this helps.

Keep documents in a pen drive if you can and then print off at the other end or post to yourself in the UK when in the TRNC but never from the UK out as you will never see them again.

The Greek Cypriot border guys english is not very good, when i crossed once they were convinced the route finder plan i had printed off for Paphos too Kyrenia were in fact details of a property i had bought in the north, my initial reaction was to laugh untill i realised there were 3 stern guys looking at me. Fortunately for me a disturbance started at the border post and they all soon lost interest in me.

re msg 1

I would NOT carry ANY documents re property in the north ESPECIALLY if they are legal documents regarding a house purchase on land still owned by a GC.

I'm not aware of any EU citizen being arrested, but am aware of the most innocuous "buff" being treated like it was a "contact of sale" result in lengthy time spent making a statements...

Non EU citizens have been arrested ..

I'd say the risks of anything dramatic happening are remote, but do you want to be the "scapegoat"..?

Lest you think I'm being "dramatic" follow the link to the UK Foreign and Commonwealth website..

Mess 21 Arry. Searched at the border 2007 going North to South. Went through every bit of luggage. Said they were looking for cigarettes and alcohol! Did not have either so a waste of time!

rowlo As previous post mentions, if you are stopped at the border crossing or airport with documentation regarding property purchase in north they will make it extremely uncomfortable for you. regardles if they can or not do anything, its not a situation i wish to be in.

rowlo,

there are unsubstantiated cases of people talking on inbound flights to Larnanca about properties in the north and being detained and questioned on landing.

It is a real threat to anyone carrying info about properites in the north arriving or leaving from RoC.

Certainly there is a real threat if leaving the TRNC to RoC that if found with info on properties you will be detained. So better to e-mail info to yourself and download locally if it is a desperate requirment. Or as MM states use a flash drive or similar to carry data.

Stevec

We had to get our contract back from TRNC also, so the Estate Agent posted them back to us.

Saved us on stamps too..

As cyprusishome says, main problem is being detained on way out.

I would be worried about them deliberately holding you up long enough to miss flight.Best give it the"only on holiday routine"and avoid mentioning anything or having documents that suggest otherwise.

Why not just fly through Ercan?

If we all do that then the prices might fall a little as yet another carrier might look at flights to Ercan. If you fly in and out of the North you will not have problems with property papers will you - much simpler.

If I were showing my real name on my profile I certainly wouldn't then advertise on a bulletin board that I was planning to conceal documents when going through Larnaca.

Do you think the bulletin boards are not read by interested parties?

Top tip Harlequin.

As you've said before there is far too much naivety with regard to personal information on the internet.

Hi firestarter....I'm sure that's the case.

But I'm sure it wouldn't stop the GC authorities detaining you long enough to miss your flight whilst they double-checked it !

Ours were taken off us North/South, didn't detain us too much just told us we would NEVER own the property, then gave us some dirty looks, a bit scary at the time, but they were only copies of our contract. Always copy everything before going even Passports, it can't do any harm
