Hello all

Talking of good restaurants, I have heard good reports on Effendis. We are taking some friends out mid month to our villa and thought we would try it. Can anybody give me clear directions as to where it is (I know its somewhere in central Kyrenia....)

Hi,

Directions to Efendi Restaurant. From the Lefkosa roundabout intersection, if coming from there, for Lapta left, Catalkoy right, Girne straight on Go straight on towards town and when you have passed Anibal Restaurant get ready to turn right, a store called Atanco will be on your left. Turn right and follow the road for 50 or so yards and then swing left, Efendi House will be in front of you to the left. You will be in a one way system with limited parking, if you follow the road around to the left on the next bend, you will come upon a free car park on your left - not too far to walk back though.

Sue.

Posh restaurant is the Ambience in Karaoglanoglu, seaside setting candles and excellent food.

My favourite not posh, but excellent food is Dunya in the same village.

Come and see us at the Old Grapevine, just up from the Coloney, nice and snuggly in the winter and lovely to sit outside in the summer.

We can't recommend St Tropez. Overpriced for mediocre food and the service wasn't good either. Will not go there again.

I wouldn't say Effendis is 'plush' - but it's a fantastic restaurant. One of the best that we've been to. Definately worth a visit.

The Waterfront Restaurant in Lapta - operated by Tony and Ruth (ex of the Farmhouse) is very good and very comfortable with lovely settings.

I must declare that I am the Landlord so have a connection to the establishment but honestly believe that, under their management, it is one of the best restaurants around.

La Habanera at Rocks hotel. Extremely nice Italian-ish menu, lovely decor, excellent service, very reasonable wine prices. Our favourite place at the moment for posh-nosh.

Posh restaurants really the TRNC has not

But a lot serve pretty good scoff

If its kebap's you crave

Fast food in Alsancak gets pretty good raves

Archways for a Cyprus cusine

Their portions certainly arnt mean

The golf club hits the spot

But for wine you need lots of dosh

Asian food its much the same

Maybe its the cooks to blame

Guido's they say is superb

Although Hippo is not an Italian nerd

You can now add to is if you wish

The main restaurant at the Rocks Hotel is plush by any standards. Saturday nights normally an excellent pianist from Russia is playing.

The prices are good by English standards and the service is perfect, as is the food.

Patina is lovely, along with Ambience and Effendi

I was at the Rugby yesterday and someone was telling me they had awful steaks at Efendi's but that this was an aberration and they had been back since (I know, I know, brave of them!) and the food was fine.

The new Tango to Buddha looks good and gets rave reviews. We have not been yet. We are waiting for the honeymoon period to settle down and see if the glowing reports continue....

the new king of the block - Tango to Buddha ....... the first true international standard restaurant/bar/lounge concept in TRNC , more money spent per sqaure metre than any other establishment to create the place

Has anyone tried the new Portuguese restaurant in Lefkosa yet? I think it is part of a hotel, something like the Golden Tulip(?), not exactly sure.

Last time we went to a Portuguese restaurant we had a wonderful time with live music, dancing and superb food, so we are keen to hear any feedback on it.

Hello everyone good morning

Pipie, re. your original posting which I found confusing.

What is it you want, do you want a "posh" restaurant which has been beautifully designed and furnished to a standard superior to The Colony or Savoy so you can be seen to be very wealthy when dining.

If so I think you will be searching for ever.

I have never eaten in either place but a word of warning if the standard of food coming out of the Colony's kitchen is anything like the standard of their pool cleanliness you might have need of a pharmacy the next day.

Why not save some money and visit some fantastic restaurants which provide a very acceptable and comfortable ambiance as well as superb food and an enjoyable evening.

regards

Doug

There's a new restuarant opening up in Ilgaz called the International club. The menu looks very posh

indeed, so I expect the decor will be plush also.

The one past the Olive Tree is Midsummer House - not been there yet, but, have been to Bellapais Gardens and have to say it is excellent. Beautiful setting, excellent restaurant, service was excellent and a nice touch was the Chef coming round to the tables to check everything was ok. That, to me, is the sign of a good restaurant. There was a young lady pianist playing all night. If looking for a top class restaurant, where you don't actually get ripped off - the food was excellent - best Kleftico I have ever had and I have had more than a few - you can't go wrong with this place. Of course we could have just been lucky and picked a good night, but I don't think so somehow. St Tropez was always a favourite for a special occasion, but Bellapais Gardens was far better.

The Levant Bar and Bistro in Karmi has re-opened and has a wonderful atmosphere, view of St. Hilarion from their outdoor terrace, and great food. You can have a two or three course meal, or just a pint at the bar. Very charming.

Thank you very much KarmiGirl! Please let me know who you are the next time you’re in the Levant, so I can thank you in-person. We certainly agree with you that it has a wonderful atmosphere and view.

Wouldn't recommend Tango To Buddha. Very expensive for not particularly nice food - in fact I would go so far as to say y starter was downright awful, my main could have been from a supermarket and the dessert while nice was completely uninspiring. My husband was distinctly underwhelmed by his whole meal and couldn't actually figure out what was underneath both his starter and main - a vaguely warm, gooey mush and our freind left half of her main course. Also I don't appreciate my plate being taken away while I'm talking to my friends BEFORE I've even finished as happened with both my main course and desert and take a torch if you have even slightly bad eyesight. Sorry to be so negative - I always try to see the positive in any situation but I would be scratching for anything good out of that night out! Have heard very good reports about Joya abut still haven't got around to trying it out yet

Never been to ambience, but we are looking to go in the week some time. Is it a fish restaurant, if so, do they have a big choice of things like steak & chicken as well? Is it pricey? Should we book it before hand?

Went to the Address Restaurant the other week, I've never seen a t-bone that big! An the chargrilled chicken was big as well, never had a portion like that out here before and i've been to many different restaurants, i would reccommend it! it is right next to the sea, just round the corner from Ambience, where Missina used to be.

Try Midsummer House - fine dining and plush but expensive by Cyprus Standards - about 250 TL 3 courses coffee and wine.

The other one I have tried and its on the same concept is Patina

Loved them both

both are in the Catalkoy area

Msg 78, I am glad you like our restaurant .The price of 250 tl for 3 course ,coffee and wine you forgot to mention how many people for! i assume was for at least 2 people.Even so it seems too high looking at our prices on our menu.Either, other items such as pre-drinks were had or expensive wine was consumed.(varies between 33 tl -200 tl

3 course with coffee and an averagely priced wine (let`s say 40 tl) would come to about 160-170 tl for 2 persons.

There are many good restaurants in N Cyprus, but, as someone has put on another thread, "One Man's Meat is Another Man's Poison". What suits one will not, necessarily, suit another. And, one person's idea of good food is not another's. It's all horses for courses, surely?

And Pipie - message 87 - please, for Christ's sake, read messages, rather than keep coming on here asking "directions please" or "how much do they charge" or "where it is please". Perhaps if you were to read the threads/messages, you'd know?

Yes Pipie - we went to Quente last week. The food is very good, and as you know from DiFigaros, the setting is wonderful. The food is the Brazilian steak style where you begin with plates of Meze, then hot Meze on swords. The main course is then a drawn out affair with the waiters coming and going with various meats on long swords - these range from whole legs of lamb to chops, beef, chicken etc. They carve the meat from the sword at your table, and you just keep on going until you have had enough ! It is a little pricey though relative to other restaurants - 49 YTL for the full set menu, atlthough you do get a lot so I guess its OK.

Harita,

from Girne head towards Karakum, go past the new Tango to Buddha, then opposite Lemar there is a kebab shop on the corner called Aleesta, turn left and go down there, Patina is on the left

Being a connoisseur on food,

Restaurants do not recommend:

GUIDO'S: Food not bad very boring atmosphere in there want to leave after 15 minutes of being in there.

ST TROPEZ: Can't cook a decent Steak anymore asked for medium rare got medium to well when told a waiter told me thats how medium rare is.

BO THAI: Almost as boring as Guido's for atmosphere. Food all tasted the same just different colour.

Canli Balik: Fish fresh but meze is awful. Over priced, about 10 cats hovering around you.

Restaurants do recommend in order:

THE HOUSE: By far the best restaurant at the moment can not believe no one has mentioned it.

TANGO2BUDDA: Very good ambience food improved since opening, service also good recommend at the weekends.

LA MATTA: Italian at Port Cratos priced well flavour of food very good. My number 1 choice of a proper italian restaurant.

THE ROCKS: Food always spot on reasonable prices. Excellent service.

EFENDI: Food is always good. Boring menu. Need to change menu.

Do not know where you got that from Brinsley,

From Wiki and other sites,

he amount of time a steak is cooked is based upon personal preference; shorter cooking times retain more juice, whereas longer steak cooking times result in drier, tougher meat but reduce concerns about disease. A vocabulary has evolved to describe the degree to which a steak is cooked. The following terms are in order from least cooked to most cooked:

Raw — Uncooked. Used in dishes like steak tartare, Carpaccio, gored gored, tiger meat and kitfo.

Seared, Blue rare or very rare — Cooked very quickly; the outside is seared, but the inside is usually cool and barely cooked. The steak will be red on the inside and barely warmed.

Rare — (52 °C [125 °F] core temperature) The outside is gray-brown, and the middle of the steak is red and slightly warm.

Medium rare — (55 °C [130 °F] core temperature) The steak will have a fully red, warm center. This is the standard degree of cooking at most steakhouses, unless

Medium — (60 °C [140 °F] core temperature) The middle of the steak is hot and red with pink surrounding the center. The outside is gray-brown.

Medium well done — (65 °C [150 °F] core temperature) The meat is light pink surrounding the center.

Well done — (71 °C [160 °F] and above core temperature) The meat is gray-brown throughout and slightly charred.

Overcook — (much more than 71 °C [160 °F] core temperature) The meat is dark throughout and slightly bitter.

On the main road in Alsancak opposite Nature garden centre ( not far from the pork shop and Starling supermarket) you will see a sign "Yesultepe, Ilgaz" towards mountain.

Take this road and go up to Ilgaz , you will see a sign "Intarnational Club" to the right.

Won the “Sunday Times Best Amateur Chef in Great Britain” in 1977, a forerunner of Lloyd Grossman’s successful T.V.Master Chef Series.

Worked for Unilever, Allied Bakeries, Sayers etc.

Now he is a freelance writer.

Sorry , he is not a rugby player!

Yes, Clarissa, he was a celebrity in 70-80th but even he is retired now he knows a lot about food and not only of that era.

Food has been and is his passion and love.

When we are in France or GB we have meals in Michelin Star restaurants.

And I am sure you never heard Ronnie Cooke's name ( in food ) because it is his pseudonim. He started writing culinary column in Cyprus Star under this name but his real name is Brian Binns.

You still can find his books for sale on the Net.

I agree completely with LivingN

From what I read so far with exception of Dragon Chinese at the Rocks, the Rocks Restaurant, I have my doubts about the rest being "plush" and "servinmg good food at the same time! I know for sure, most of the restaurants mentioned in this thread have never served above average food. More often than not, after spending a small fortune I felt I could cook a better one myself at home (trust me - I can cook!). This specially applies to places like Savoy, Colony, Cratos, Tango to Buddha!

Then again, it all depends where you ate before and what it is you are exactly comparing the food with. Enjoying the food in London in places like Santa Croche, San Marinos, Menzies, Elephant on The River etc. I have become very fussy with the food anywhere else! The same goes for Indian food...

Here, I would look more for the entertaining factor and the price. If I want really good food - I would buy the ingredients and plenty at home!

Well exactly - we dine out in London a lot (Gordon Ramsay's 'Maze' on 6th November)- so nearly always disappointed with what people call 'plush' restaurants in TRNC - so we usually keep it simply when on holiday in TRNC.

I suppose it's the old adage - "one man's meat is another man's poison".

We went to the Bellapais Gardens earlier this year. Lovely setting and the staff were very good indeed. However, we found the food nothing more than average and expensive for what it was.

Still, it would be a funny old world if we all liked the same thing

We are always disappointed when we go to a so called 'posh restaurant' in TRNC - best to find a restaurant that serves good, honest fresh food then you can't go wrong.

For the most fantastic setting, good food/service and the great view of Hilarion Castle it has to be the Levant.
