Is there anybody on this site north of Watford? Is there any life other that "capital punishment "from little Nige?

Last time I was in London, went on the tube people rushing around like crazy, not speaking to each other - bit impersonal. Pity everything is brought and built in London even the new Wembley was rebuilt there instead of the midlands(easier access for fans etc).

We dont all wear cloth caps, talk like people on Coronation Street, eat black puddings and pies at every meal( although they are good);and keep whippets on the allotment.

We have the best countryside - north wales, yorkshire dales and lake district

Cost of living is cheaper

More and best comedians eg Les Dawso Ken Dodd(lets face it we need 'em)

Dont take ourselves too seriously

Will bring our friendly characteristics to the TRNC and enhance whenever possible

Just a thought to anyone out there,

will now boldly go .... out in the snow ...or better still forth and prosper.

kind regards to all,Steve

Hi Kitty Kat jac,

We are from Darlington, born & bred. We do live in the smog at the moment in the big capital city. Just returned from a trip home yesterday and almost got caught in the freezing weather. On the train travelling south 3 different people sat next to me and they all chatted and passed the time of day. You get into London and nobody speaks or smiles, you are right it is so much more friendly up North. Roll on retirement so we can go back home.

My doctor advised me to move to London. I had to go and see him I told him that I was feeling miserable and depressd. He said I should move to London, I asked him if it would cure me he said no but at least I would fit in.

Dear Jane, ended up in Darlington after following the Hadrian's Wall road from Haltwhistle and roman fort at Vindalanda. Stopped at market town of Castle Barnard - nice place.

Used to go regularly to Gods own country north of Skipton - Grassington and Kilnsey,Malham Cove and Tarn,Inglebro' and Gaping Gill caves,Mother Shiptons at Knaresborough, the x Keys pub next to the A59 at East Marton ,York,Eden Camp,Hardcastle Crags and other packhorse routes ..etc etc

My uncle used to live and owned a greengrocers in Banoldswick, which until 1974 was in Yorkshire. One of his customers came in and remarked - thank God we are now in Lancashire ..... I dont think I could have stood another of those Yorkshire winters.

cheers,Steve

Hi Kitty Jac,

Taylors Pork Pies, now you are talking. When we lived in Italy, I used to dream I was eating them. Where in the TRNC do you live? Our bungalow is nr. Esentepe. I love it there and cannot wait for the time when I can spend the majority of my time there.

We will have to meet up with Wynyard Man and Britvic from Thorpe Thewles and anyone else from that location.

Newcastle born and bred. It makes me laugh when people from Manchester refer to themselves as Northerners, presumably because it's north of Watford, but as far as I'm concerned they live in the Midlands!!

Not at all Mindy but that's how those further north of Lancs & the North West view that particular part of the world as it's about half way down on the trip to London.

Hi Barnaclebill,

got to agree with you about Northumberland. My sister-in-law lives just outside of Morpeth and when we visit, we go out looking at all the magnificent scenery and beaches up there. It truly is beautiful and I never tire of it.

I was born in Glasgow, brought up in Ilkley, (moor ba'tat) and now live in Lancaster (when not in Northern Cyprus) So I guess I'm definately a true Northerner! London's ok for a bit of sightseeing, shopping & a trip to the theatre but wouldn't want to live there. Give me Northern hospitality anyday!

I was Southern born & brung up, but like Maggie & Bernie, I lived in Ilkley, for 25 yrs. Back in the 'smoke' now.

As every Northerner knows, Ilkley isn't actually in Yorkshire, it's a 'canton' of Surrey, where they speak English and take tea & cinnamon toast in Betty's on the Grove.

Travel 2 miles from Ilkley in any direction and you are back in Yorkshire!

(Only adviseable during daylight!)

When were you there? I lived in Ilkley from 1957 til 1983 I am 57 years young now - maybe we knew each other?

Were you 'that' Maggie I was with in the cloaks cupboard at the Craiglands Hotel after the Christmas ball??

I was there from 1980 till 2005. Lived up at Westwood Drive, dead posh eh? Kids went to Sacred Heart, then on to St Marys Menston. I ran a business with offices in Ilkley and a warehouse in Addingham, where my daughter still lives.

Rob, No, not me at Craiglands! think you must have missed my 'wild child' days as by 1980 I was maried with 3 kids!

We lived on Parish Ghyll Road (just off the Grove) I went to The Grove Preparetory School (sadly not there any more) then on to Ilkley Grammer School (when it was a grammer school -11plus & all that). Happy days at Ilkley outdoor swimming pool, rowing boats on the river, dances at the Winter Gardens & the very famous Cow & Calf Disco! (before your time?)

Went back for a visit last year and was dissapointed it had changed so much.

I have fond memories of Belle Vue in Manchester, I only lived a stones throw away, Scenic railway and 'The Bobs' rollercoasters.GREAT !!! Not that I could afford to go in often, and don't get me started on the Speedway.

I am a Barnsley lass married to part of the Black & White Army.

Lived in Newcastle for five years and been back in Barnsley for the past 15 years.

In both places never met a set of more friendly people in my life.

Other than TRNC of course.

Did anyone go to the Embassy Club, Bernard Mannings gaf. If you needed the loo when he was on you had to cross your legs, anyone who left thier seats were in for a right insulting earbashing.

Just a few thoughts on this theme -

Dear Chick Mess 65 : dont take things too personally,no intention to insult, but just confirm that a lot of the UK's heritage and history + major sporting events ends up in London - everybody knows it but its keeps happening . Just giving

comments as they appear to us that survive on tripe and onions(no thanks).Think from a personal point of view that there is more opportunity in the South, but often us up north could never even afforded a rabbit hutch down south even in the early 70's - cost of housing .

Money not everything, - south seems more "stressed", but lets agree things much more level in TRNC and celebrate that. Cie la vie and cheers to the future, kind regards,Steve

Dear Maggie Mess 60 : used to go the a Local authority stone built home in Westbourne Road - the county Council sold it off, then knocked it down and built a red bricked nonentity of a private nursing home in its place.

Lancasters ok if you have plenty of time to spend in the one way system. Had to take my lad to LRI from morecambe many moons ago ago - pass.

You need a sense of humour to negotiate this every day - you have my sympathy.

Couple of years ago did the cross bay walk - not with Cedric - the other chap- forget his name .. .great but longer than I thought, past the cockle picker area.

Think we probably have a lot more open spaces and sense of humour that the south cannot match

Regards to all - north, south,TRNS (you lucky b...'s),Steve

Who mentioned Bettys? That brings back memories my Grandma used to drag me shopping with her every Saturday and if i was a good girl (which of course i always was) we could go to Bettys for a special chocolate milkshake and a scone.

Even though I'm back in London, I have to admit that the best bread in the UK comes from Bettys, delicious!

I also can't survive without Taylors Yorkshire Tea!

Bettys & Taylors,... a national treasure!

Is there a branch of Betty's in Harrowgate? We stayed there for a long week-end a few years back. We drove over and took a steam train ride through 'heartbeat' country. Great memories.

Msg 85 No1 the original Betty's was in Harrogate (no W) Ilkley was the first branch they opened - I think they're all over the place now.

Course the other Great national treasure to originate in Yorkshire was Harry Ramsden's Fish & Chips a White Cross, Guisely. Remeber going as kid and they had a fairground complee with helter skelter. They're all over now but not really Harry's any more and nowhere near as good!

M&B

HR at White cross eh!

Used to be fantastic until they were bought out by Compass years ago. They introduced a machine to spread 1 micron of butter on your sliced bread in 3 nano seconds! The original wooden hut is still there, but the helter skelter went years ago to make room for more coach parks.

Very sad!

Do you remember the Silver Cross Pram Factory just down the road? That's now 'bijou' town houses and luxury appartments!

Good fish & chips still available in Ilkley though!

The best fish & chips in the world (imho) are to be found at a place called Whellan's in Lytham nr Blackpool - it's a 6o mile round trip for us but well worth it! When I got back from TRNC last saturday I went straight there! It helped with the depression!

Msg 82 Steve, Slightly off topic but yesterday was the 5th anniversary of the Chinese cocklepickers dissaster on Morecambe Bay _ I well remember helecopters flying back & forth over my house (at Slyne) all night - didn't know why till the next morning. Never done the cross bay walk as terrified of quicksands, have you ever been to the Maritime Museum in Lancaster and seen the pictures of the coaches & horses that used to cross the bay to Grange over Sands? many never made it! -You were lucky!

Dear Maggie, used to visit Slynne House HFE near you until 1998. On the road to Kirky Lonsdale there a cable over the road - not sure - does it go to a quarry.

Quicksands at Silverdale and just lower down than Kents Bank - bloke told us perfect place for a murder as about 20 foot deep. Feb 2007, a lad took shortcut over the sands and ended up to his waist with tide coming in -

luckily for him it was a low tide and they managed to get him out.

Been to Maritime museum - Sunderland Point interesting place, noticed cotton tree now blown down.

This time last year had Riverdance stuck on our beach - place was like August bank holiday in freezing February - people coming from miles to take photos and collect buscuits.

Quality not quantity on this topic

cheers for now,Steve

The glorious Peak District and it`s superb dams of Ladybower and Howden, frozen over this morning and shrouded by the snow topped pine forests.

The High Peak Hunt leaving from Bakewell last Sunday as it has for nearly 300 years.

A true gem in the Northern Crown.

Aurthur I lived on Shetland for 8 years, my eldest daughter still lives there. I always said it would be a great island if they could relocate it into the middle of the Med - Then I discovered TRNC....perfect!
