Please all note this as a warning.

As all those who have Temporary Import Licence's on there cars

check the Expirary Dates. Pay extra attention on re - newing them

as at the moment with a new regulation Custom Officers are now searching

Vehicles that have not re-newed or Payed Full Duty and Taxes on the vehicles.

Note:- today they have taken 7 vehicles at the Kyrenia area.

Hi Olytrans

Are you saying existing regs have been changed ? or customs are now enforcing existing regs more rigorously, noted the compound at Nicoia customs is about full of Brit reg'd cars at the mo.

Missed a few days and found this post. Thought it should be back at the top.

I wonder how much money is missing from the governments till because of this fraud. It is not a few pounds which I am sure most of us will at some time avoid paying, it is thousands of pounds.

If people cannot afford to pay the duties then they should not have imported their vehicles.

There are several cars in Lapta that fit this criteria and seem to think it is OK to routinley drive around avoiding paying.

Hope by keeping this thread live people will see sense before they loose their vehicles.

With the high increase in road tax I really am not surprised people try to get away without paying it. We visit twice a year and on each visit have to pay fines, because only my husband (the car is registered in his name) can pay the tax, until the duty is paid on the car. It would be so much easier if the tax could be paid by our friends.

Sometimes, I wonder if would be easier to hire a car, but having your own car still works out cheaper for us (at the moment).

Wonder if it was because it is Friday ie Pegasus and Carpenters market????

But UK registered vehicles were bein pulled over by police and official looking men with clip boards and mobile phones near Tempo.

I am sure it will be cheaper in the long run to pay the taxes than to have vehicle impounded which is now looking more likely. This is the second purge in last couple of months on vehicles with unpaid duty.

I saw them impounding one yesterday near Karakum white van and one police car. That looked a Uk reg vechile.

If you have a legitamate South address i dont see how they can impound it.

We brought our car in through the port in Girne(last October) we where then given a month on our yellow paper and told we had to go to Lefkosa to renew it on the due date, surprise surprise, we where then told that because we had brought a container in we had to import the car.

If you have a Gumruk stamp in your passport you are not likely to get an extension on your yellow paper for 12months

Basically they said you have imported a container FOC and therefore you can pay the import tax on the car or ship it back to the UK,no amount of arguing, pleading etc would make them change their mind so in the end we gave in and paid up, it didn't leave us with a lot of choice

I went over to Turkey to a friends wedding in Sept.In a UK plated L200 which I bought into the country after driving it down from the UK on 21st of Jan 2008. I was told i had 1 year in which to pay the duty. After coming back from Turkey I was told that I now only had 30 days in which to pay all duties.I argued the toss say that I still had 4 months approx before this was required To which there reply was that as I now had temporary residencey all duties were now payable within 30 days

Help! I shipped my car from UK in April 2008. Was told I had 12 months to pay import duties of £2k approx. As I am resident in UK and visit Cyprus 3/4 times per year and with 12 months UK unexpired road tax I thought all was ok. In Oct 2008 I went to pay duty (yes 4months early) but was told this had increased to £4.5K! As I did not have enough funds to pay the increased amount Customs Office said I could pay when I return in April 0f 2009. I am now wondering if there has been further increases in my absence. My car is 1900cc and is now 8 years old. I would be very grateful if you are able to let me know the present position. Thanks

Hippo if you are RESIDENT in the south for more time per year than the North then that is one thing. Just having an 'address' in the South does not make using a south registered vehical legitimate if you LIVE in the north. It is about where you are resident not where you have addresses.
