Does anyone know if and where we can buy live yoghurt here in trnc? Chemists don't know what I am talking about, nor do the shop-keepers. Strange really when you think that the Greeks have been producing this for years and realise the benefits of it. Much better than many anti-biotics and vital when you are on them, to prevent oral thrush etc: I also use it in banana bread recipes, great and healthy but probably one more thing we have to do without! Rape seed is growing everywhere, yet, no-one realises that rape seed oil is the VERY best to use. Much better for lowering cholesterol than olive oil or any other oils. I'd grow it myself but have no idea how to refine the oil.

mitsi we only see ayran being sold in the summer for some reason on street corners, but you can get the manufactured stuff in all the supermarkets, or actimel is also good.

I was under the impression that most yogurt here is live. P.S. "Yogurt" is a Turkish word.

hi mitzi, almost all yogurt must be live since I always grow on to make my own from shop yogurt using uht milk at blood temperature did buy some german sterilized yogurt once which needs no refrigeration but if your yogurt isn't live in cyprus I don't know where it would be not sure if the excellent local yogurt comes from a goat sheep or cow tho' I think live yogurt is a promotional slogan but may relate to a specific culture ayran translates as yogurt mixed with water doesn't it? but in cyprus they put too much salt in it for my taste also the locals try to warn me: "you do understand this is not milk?" you can get unsalted helim cheese in lemar though andre

Ayran is just watered down yoghurt with salt, you can make it yourself and add as much or as little salt as you like. Have you tried the Turnip juice here? that sounds pretty healthy and is laced with Chilli for good measure. Great with Kebab.
