chick ... Goes something like ..

As long as I remember, how proud I used to be ..

When me dad & mother they bought new shoes for me ..

We were all dressed up stiff as starch ..

Then off to church we would march ..

But the very best time of all, was when we had no shoes at all ..

Barefoot days when we were just a couple of kids ..

Barefoot days oh boy the things we did ..

We'd go down to a shady nook , with a bent pin for a hook ..

We'd fish all day and we'd fish all night ..

But the darned all fish would refuse to bite ..

Then we'd slide & slide down some old cellar door ..

Slide & slide till our pants got torn ..

Then we'd have to go home , stay in our bed ..

Till our mother got busy with the needle & thread ..

Oh boy , what joy , we had in barefoot days ..

Hiding behind me Aunt Kath's settee when the "Tally Man" came knocking on the door.

Helping me Mum mangle the sheets in the back yard, losing concentration and letting the sheets go into the greasy bit and then getting a clip round the ear!!

Boxing day lunchtime - all the family down the pub and then all back to my Mum and Dad's for more drinks (shorts) and singing and dancing to Max Bygraves' record. Anyone remember "Heart of my Heart" and "Only a Shanty" ? I was brought up on these and other like it and still remember every word!

Here comes Hoppity - dear old Hoppity!!

Mindy - now you're talking! Putting my head around the front room door "I'm off" Mum - "Get in here". Me (sheepish) "What". Mum - "If you thinki you're going out like that young lady, you've got another think coming".

Explanation - me, in hot pants with knee high pink suede boots.

Also had Afghan coat - could never get the smell out.

Tripped over extra wide bellbottoms down stairs and broke by elbow.

Cherry B - sooooo sophisticated!

Barley wine - me mother again - never let a bloke buy you barley wine, you'll get drunk and he'll take advantage - God, if only she knew.

I loved the midi hair style - thought I was the bees knees with that!

The-Wicks

Unfortunately I moved on to Gaymers Old English Cider after my exploits with brown and mild and it put me off of drink for life (well for a few years anyway).

Rum and Black used to be a favourite drink of many of my friends. Watneys Red Barrel (disgusting) was the only 'draught' beer you could buy in my local.

Spit and sawdust in the public bar and I won't comment about the people that frequented the saloon bar.

Triangular, frozen Jublee's in the summer (we used to have a summer every year then)!

Running to the neighbour's to see if she could loan a shilling to put in the gas meter.

The Twinkle annual every Christmas (Favourite: Nurse Nancy).

Randle & Hopkirk (Deceased).

The Black & White Minstrel Show.

The batter scrapings from the fish cabinet for 1d

Sitting staring into a REAL coal fire.

Having to make that real coal fire.

Dad putting shovel over fireplace & covering with newspaper to "draw" it.

Lino on the floors (why was it always orange & brown)?

Wash day.

Bath night.

The fair that used to park up once a year on a local field.

Praying that the tall, greasy haired guy would spin you on the waltzers more than the other girls.

Klackers (still have scars on my knuckles).

The Zylaphone (Still remember how to play Doe a Deer).

1 cig in a paper bag & sharing it with all you're friends.

Cherry B mixed with cider (lethal)!

Crikey... It seems like yesterday!

We are survivors: Born before 1940.

We were born before TV, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, contact lenses, videos and the pill. Credit cards, ballpoint pens, dish-washers, tumble driers, electric blankets, drip dry clothes and before man walked on the moon.

We got married first then lived together(how quaint was that) Big Mac was an oversized raincoat and crumpet we had for tea. Sheltered accommodation was where you waited for a bus.

Time sharing was togetherness, a chip was a piece of wood or fried potato. hardware was nuts & bolts and software wasn't a word.

Stud was something that fastened a collar to a shirt and going all the way meant staying on the bus to the terminus. Cigarette smoking was fashionable grass was mown and coke was kept in the coalhouse, a joint was a piece of meat you ate on Sunday and pot was something you cooked it in. A gay person was the life and soul of a party while aids meant beauty treatment or help for someone in trouble.

Your Mum bringing in the washing from the line in the winter and the sheets being frozen and your Dad's shirts being able to stand up on their own. The tops on the milk bottles popping off because the top of the milk had frozen whilst it was on the step. Crittall windows which froze up on the inside (also had big gaps in them and so always let a draught in). Like lots of others, my Mum putting on the oven and opening the door to try and heat up the kitchen while your school uniform was on the oven door till it was warm enough to put on. Good old days? In some ways, definitely, but not necessarily in all ways!!

I loved watching the shopkeeper slicing the bacon or ham on the slicing machine, and going an errand for my mum for 2oz's of sliced corn beef and I would nibble a bit off the end on the way home, she never knew. Naughty me!!

The Best Memory of all; Mid Morning break at school, and if you were Quick,

Message 159 - trncoldboy - chocolate milk! Blimey, where did you go to school? I see from your profile that you and I are the same age, but all we got was frozen milk in the winter or curdled milk in the summer! Admittedly, the milk was in glass bottles, but ....

Would be interested to know what you got for school dinners!

Regards

Message 269 - HER NAME WAS CAROLINE, CAROLINE EYE EY EYE..............

Many happy memories of me and my transistor radio under the bedclothes. Do you remember when your batteries went and you had to keep re-tuning and turning your radio round until you got some sort of reception?

And what about WONDERFUL RADIO LONDON?

We were really "hip" listening to this wonderful music after we had sat with parents watching; Fanny Craddock and her wimpy "Johnny" with his silly monacle. Clash of 2 cultures would you say J ?
