I am away from my dogs at the moment, and it breaks my heart that i can't get my daily dose of doggy cuddles and love!! But i worry that they will forget me and it will take time to get to know them again. I once read that dogs are not capable of conscious thought, therefore, providing they are loved and fed, do not actually miss their owner, and when they get excited at seeing their owner again, it's merely because they see the owner as a food source. Or is it....? Do they actually miss the owner...?

Hi Daisy, Mike is right , my Golden Lunatic flattens me when she sees me no matter how long I have been away. Also my adult offspring come around infrequently but she goes nuts just hearing their voices sometimes months apart.

daisy dukes. On your return your dogs will be as pleased to see you as you are them. They certainly won't have forgotten you...they will have missed all the little things that you let them get away with!!!! I certainly don't think that dogs forget.....we have a "lunatic" 11 month old puppy called Biscuit who is totally in love with a feral kitten that we adopted about 9 months ago. Now very tame and spends most of the day curled up under the table cuddling/washing the dog. When she disappeared for a couple of days the dog was beside himself......wouldn't eat and kept going in the garden looking over the wall for her. When he heard a cat meowing outside one morning he was out the door in a shot. It was like friends reunited....the dog was literally howling with delight and the cat was on her back purring. When I was relating the story to our vet she said "oh yes, they don't forget their friends"...so your dogs certainly won't forget you...we just think they will.

What dogs do not have, is a sense of time. They will give you the same welcome after 20 minutes or 20 months.

Not this one: Hachi-Ko was a Japanese Akita given to a Tokyo professor in 1924. The professor rode a commuter train to and from his suburban home daily, and Hachi-Ko accompanied him to the station in the morning and returned to the station to meet him each evening. When Professor Ueno died from a stroke, Hachi-Ko continued to make his daily trips to the train station at the exact hours previously established, and after waiting for the train, and his master, he walked home alone. Although the dog was only about 18 months old when the professor succumbed to the stroke, Hachi-Ko continued walking to the station every evening until his own death, nearly ten years later. A bronze statue of Hachi-Ko stands at Toyko's Shibuya Station today, and a ceremony attracts hundreds of dog fanciers to the station to honour Hachi-Ko each year.

hi all just got back from 5 days in uk. missed my 3 so much did they forget me NO we have had sulks for about half an hour a run around the house but now back to normal. Its strange reading about the japanese dog, we moved house 2 years ago and i told my two to stay in the old house whilst we moved the stuff into the new one i opened the back door and there was the one i adopteOnc we had ten kittens bpd on the step. i went back to the old house and my staffi which i brought here was sat looking after the house. The strange thing was she had never seen this house or indeed beeen here but there she was. Now I have adopted another and I know she will find me where so ever I go. Once we had 10 kittens born in our prevoius restarant which was in kyernia she was found in karakum but found her way back to me. As I said I have jut got back rom uk and watched jamie oliver save our bacon that broke my heart no more bacaon butties for me. so they do have probably more intelligance than us xxxxx

Answer this one then. When I was working wierd hours in the UK. My poodle would always wait at the front door, tail wagging 10 minutes before I arrived home? My time range for arriving home could vary between 4pm to 4am. How did he know? I am sure I cannot work it out. I lived in a busy City area (Fulham). Has anyone had similar experiences?

We had a border collie we used to take her to Wales to a Caravan about 3 times a year, she used to lie down in the front of the passenger seat and never move for the hour and half it took us to get there but as soon as we turned into the road leading to the Caravan she used to get up and as soon as we opened the car door she used to run to the caravan.
