please may i share this with you. it was writen by my 12 year olf grandson and has been entered into the welsh porms competion. i known it has nothing to do with cyprus as such but we all live with borders. it goes like this. THIS STINKING CORPSE RIDDDEN BATTLEFIELD, WITH ME PRAYING ON MY KNEES. PLEASE GOD I DO NOT WANT TO DIE.. WILL YOU PLEASE HEAR MY BATTLECRY

A DISTANT GUN SHOOTS A FLARE

I WANT TO LEAVE BUT I DO NOT DARE

AS I HEA MY COMMARADES CRIES

I DO NOT HAVE THE STRENGHT TO LOOK INTO THIER EYES

AS I GET READTY MY RIFLE

ALREADY I GET AN EYEFUL

ALL I SEE THE CORPSES OF MY DEAD MATES

NOW I KNOW WE HAVE SEALED OUR FATES

MY COMMANDER BARKS AN ORDER

I FLASH BACK TO WHEN WE CROSSED THAT BORDER

NOW IM KNOCKING ON THAT GATE OF FATE

I REMEMEMBER TO MY FIRST DATE

AS I HEAR THE BURST OF A GRENADE

NOW I REMEMBER MY FITST SERANADE

HERE THEY COME, UP AND DOWN, IN AND OUT

WHY/// WILL I EVER KNOW WHAT MY LIFE IS ABOUT

thank you for letting me share tis i will continue

thank yu i know it does not have much to do with our situation here. we do have borders as i have most of my life. this boy from the age of 3 wanted to be in the marines. he gave me this complete with graphics from war scenes mainly iraq and afghastian. on the bottom vera lynn. it has riped me apart as i never thought our grandkids felt like that. when i questionrf him why his reply glam ma who have seen troubles you lived in belin they had a barrier now you live in cyprus which has a border. i have studied the situations and some of my friends older bothers have seen action or been killed in action. i stil want to fulfill my dream and i beleive that peace will prevail. out of the mouth of babies xxxxx

Hi Lilli - welcome back and hope you enjoyed your visit to your family. I should say that our Son (now aged 28) was never interested in the armed forces, but was excellent at English while at school. He had a particular interest in the war poems of Rupert Brook and other 1st world war poets. He had to study it for A level and he wrote some beautiful poems himself. In fact (I'm trying not to brag here) he had one of his poems read out during assembly for Remembrance Day. As an adult he appears to have a very balanced view of world conflict (I should add here that he is about a million times more intelligent than Paul and myself). It may surprise you how much insight kids have!! Be proud of him. Lots of love. Jean

My oldest son was in Musa Qala (Helmand Prov., Afghanistan) with 16th Air Assault Brigade in 2007. He was there for 3 months and there was not one day when they were not attacked by the Taliban. Some days they were attacked 4 or 5 times, day and night. Many of his friends were wounded quite a few were killed, some in front of his eyes. At times the fighting was hand-to-hand with fixed bayonets. On one occasion he didn't sleep for 3 days as he was too scared to close his eyes in case the Taliban overran them.

The experience turned him from a happy-go-lucky young lad into a thoughtful young/old man. At the time he wanted to leave the armed forces as soon as he got back to the UK because he was so frightened by his experience, but now he can't wait to go back as he realises he misses the adrenalin buzz.

Do love war poems especially those from the Great War. There was one whos title I cant remember but was composed by a chap called Baldrick. Maybe someone on the board can rack their memory with the name and the words.

Hi simbas many thanks. I am so proud of him. More than he would be of me with all the mistakes. Had to dry out the laptop with a hairdryer after the puppy upset my glass of wine all over it.All the letters stuck and it took me ages to try to put the words together but I think you all got the drift.Managed to get to cardiff and porthcawl but no furthe west due to the snow. Mind it was lovely to see it and spend time which wasnt planned snowboarding with them. We were just so lucky to have missed the snow again by one day. You take care and see you soon Lilli xxx

To Scobby thank you for your kind words xx

Liz

Somehow I missed the poem first time around, WOW. What insight this young man has.

I have read some of the "war poems" from the like of Rupert Brooke, Wilfred Owen and Sigfried Sasson, they always tug at the heart strings and this young man sits along those.

Well done.

Lilli,

Unless your boy is American, You must mean the 'Royal Marines' !

Never get the two things confused there is a world of difference between them.

BigMart,

I don't think it really matters that a 12 year old boy got confused over the royal marines and whatever!

Hi Lilli,

I am so sorry this turned into a slanging match as Brinsley quite rightly put it, it should never have gone down that line, please accept my apology.

I can see that you are so proud of your grand son and so you should be, to write such a poem showing so much insight to other peoples pain and loss is incredible for a 12 year old, I am proud of him and I don't even know him.
