With my lack of Turkish, I sometimes get the impression that some of the stallholders appear to quote over-inflated prices for certain items.

In particular, items like; nuts, prunes, dates, etc.

I do not feel this with the regular stallholders selling your basic F & V.

In fact one guy gave me 10 TL too much change. I gave it back of course, because I believe in "The Law of Tenfold Return".

Can anybody advise me if they feel the same and what the best price for say, prunes (and which stall, if poss).

I appreciate prices fluctuate, but this does not stop me feeling I am being over-quoted.

Personally found most F&V cheaper in local shops than on the Wed. market.

Dried fruit and nuts are very expensive. If you have a look at the packs on sale in the shops you will see that the price per kilo is very high. If you check out the shop price then next time you go you will know if you are being overcharged or not.

Find that the fruit and veg are better cheaper and more choice at ( cant remember the name) the big stall on the left after the Malpas hotel going into Girne.

Open every day and excellent in every way.

Although I do understand my numbers in turkish and can certainly barter I do tend to go to a stall with alot of Turks/cypriots buying and ask them what they are paying rather than the store holder. Don't be afraid to walk away, I have done many times and found the stall holder on a couple of occassions chashing me with a new reduced price!

Does anyone know if the stallholders always keep the same positions each week?

When will some stallholders/shopkeepers realise that the feeling we get when we believe we have been overcharged, does so much harm. This thread is one simple example.

Have you ever seen a thread mentioning that someone was charged the same as a local?

Maybe one of the Turkish language teachers for Brits, could take a group lesson at the market. Sign me up. The best lesson, must be the practical lesson.

Similar experience with the nut man at the market......bought a few small shovels of mixed nuts...probably way less than half a kilo....charged approx a fiver!

If that's the correct price, then looking at the several hundredweight of nuts on his stall the bloke was worth a mint !

You only do it once !

Will never shop at the Wednesday market again. We found things much cheaper in local supermarkets. It did seem to be one price for the expats and another for the locals !!

We always go to "Hells Bells" in Cattlekoy.....

Prices seem reasonable and the quality is always good....

The wednesday market is for locals (who get the proper prices) and the tourists and the "wet behind the ears" Brits who know no better....

Just a suggestion*, ladies/gentlemen in this thread: why not ask a Turkish Cypriot neighbour or friend to go to the market with you? Let her/him buy first or just for you - and you'll know the price of the goods for next time.

* My suggested 'system' may work in other cases also - we regularly consult our TC neighbour Leila before we buy or order.

Markets are dying here in the UK. Hope this does not happen in the TRNC.

Be more assertive with the FEW that "try it on" but support the rest. A good thriving Market is good for the community.
